Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
And the OSCAR goes to....
Johnny Depp should DEFINITELY be nominated for his portrayal of Jack Sparrow. Obviously, he may not, only because Hollywood thumbs it's nose at these types of films. But WHO CARES! Actors like Johnny Depp work from something INSIDE that means more than Hollywood BS. That's what makes watching movies worthwhile. This film is TERRIFIC. The actors are Fabulous. The overall film is a fun ride and a definite escape for 21/2 hours. It's the kind of film that pulls you in and if you allow yourself to ignore the popcorn chompers next to you, you feel like you're there, experiencing another time...another life. Isn't that why movies are made in the first place?
No Such Thing (2001)
TERRIFIC ALL THE WAY AROUND!!!
Luckily, I stumbled upon this movie on the SUNDANCE channel. Having NEVER heard of it and only stopping to watch it because I caught it at the beginning and figured I'd give it a look. I kept switching back to the INFO button and was very curious to see how I was watching a movie about a MONSTER when cinematographically it looked like a dramatic independent film...As I kept watching, I became more engrossed in this film as it wasn't heading where I expected...I'm usually good at pinpointing the basics of where the movie will go...About 3/4 of the way through I figured it was another take on "Beauty and the Beast" but it STILL ended up surprising me...I won't say more so I don't give away the CINEMATIC RIDE I so thankfully happened upon. SUPERB DIRECTION AND ACTING! Robert John Burke (the Monster) and Sarah Polley delivered wonderfully believable performances! TWO THUMBS WAY UP for the surprising CREATIVITY of all involved!
Seven Days (1998)
"Raven" episode with Bobbie Phillips was great!
I only started watching the show when I heard Bobbie Phillips was going to be on.It was a Great episode! Some of the others were hit and misses. I was able to catch earlier episodes (from Season 1, I believe)and really enjoyed them. I recently saw the "Raven" episode again in reruns and it was REALLY good. The director of this episode was "Kenneth Johnson" who I've always been a HUGE fan of.He developed "The Hulk" for tv, "Alien Nation", "V", "The Bionic Woman"... I'm looking forward to the NEW "V"!
Carnival of Souls (1998)
Interesting film...marketed COMPLETELY WRONG!
I completely understand why so many people did not get what they expected from this film. It WAS NOT what you would expect seeing WES CRAVEN's name and with the "horror" marketing.
I actually liked this film and agree with those that call it a "psychological thriller". That's EXACTLY what it is. Very understated. It deals with the mind set of Alex (Bobbie Phillips) and her coming to terms with a traumatic childhood. It is not a teen horror movie...NOT EVEN CLOSE. But I would highly recommend it as a psychological thriller for more mature and intelligent viewers.
Also, I must add, I thought it was a terrific remake because why would they copy the original exactly? The main character is dealing with the same kind of internal demons as in the original but it's a New story...If you want the original...Watch the original!
Birds of Prey (2002)
Bad... Bad...Cancelled
This Show is REALLY bad! I love action and genre movies but this one really stinks! Who cares if it strayed from the comic or not...It's gotta go. Everything about it is bad. The writing, acting, everything! Smallville yes, Birds of Crap...Please stop!
Cheyenne (1996)
Bobbie Phillips is the reason to watch...
As usual, Bobbie does a great job! She's not only beautiful but a remarkable actress. Bobbie shows a spunkiness and vulnerability in this role which is Very different than the butt-kicking "Chameleon".This modern-western is not a Great film but is worth watching for the chance to see Bobbie in what will probably be her only Western...unless Westerns make a comeback...doubtful. I give this an 8 out of 10 for a TV movie and Bobbie's endearing performance.
Scooby-Doo (2002)
Scooby Does NOT...
Forget the HYPE, this movie stinks! It doesn't know which audience to play for 3 year olds or adults. It also doesn't know whether it should be campy or cartoonish. It's a jumbled mess that only did well because of the Very LARGE and VERY EXPENSIVE marketing. If you want something to keep the kids busy, spend the money on a new toy and watch the cartoon! My rating 1...HORRIBLE DESPITE HYPE!
