La faille (2019)
Easy Binge Watch
I had a feeling before even starting this one that I was going to like it a lot. Well I did, enough to watch all 8 episodes straight though with only small break.
Some will say it is predictable, and in some ways it could easily be seen that way, but it has enough red herrings to make it hard to work out. Plenty of suspects like any good whodunnit.
A good watch and the subtitles should not be a problem if you are not a French speaker.
If you are not hooked by the end of the first episode this is not a show for you.
8/10.
Nomadland (2020)
Seriously
I am quite sure in light of all the hyper over the top reviews of this movie that my review will get voted down to the enth, but did I miss something and watch a different movie?
Boring it the only word I could use to describe this movie. I am a BIG fan of anything Frances McDormand and she was my main reason for watching this all the way through.
Maybe I had an off day, but sorry, this was seriously boring from start to finish.
it gets a 5/10 from me just because Frances McDormand is in it.
Summerland (2020)
A Nice Surprise
It is always nice to see a movie that uplifts the spirit and this one does just that. All of the emotions are experienced as this movie unfolds and there are a few surprises thrown in.
Great acting from all involved. It might seem a bit cliched to some cynics, but this one hits the right notes for me.
Highly recommended and worth multiple viewings.
8/10
Freaky (2020)
Exceeded Expectations
This one was a surprise, although a Vince Vaugh fan I did not even know he was in this until around the 9 minute mark. I didn't read the reviews or watch any trailers, so I went in blind. Good surprise and happily 100 minutes of entertainment.
There are lots of clichés and the movie is somewhat predictable, but there are very few that aren't any more, it has basically all been done to death.
If you like Vince Vaugh you will not be disappointed, he delivers some good laughs and there is lots of gore for the gore fans.
Ignore the really low reviews, half of them probably did not even watch the movie. This is a solid 6.5/10.
I will be watching it again soon.
While You Were Sleeping (1995)
As Good Now as it was Then
I saw this movie not long after it came out on VHS when I was living in a small country town. I wasn't quite as big a Sandra Bullock fan as I am now, but it is still a movie I remember well.
The cast of actors is like a whos who of great actors from another time, Jack Warden, Peter Boyle, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher. All names I liked to watch and still do. 3 out of the 4 have since passed.
This movie showed the world who Sandra Bullock is, as if we didn't already know after Speed the year before.
Some people probably find this movie a bit sappy, but for me it is a pick me up movie that I watch it regularly, along with a handful of other movies that just make the world a better place for a moment.
An easy 8/10, and a must watch at least once.
You Kill Me (2007)
An Unpolished Gem
This is one of those movies you are going to either love or hate. Most of todays movie "lovers" will have judged it good or bad within the first 10-15 minutes and will have either turned it off or continued.
The movie for me really gets going at around the 19 minutes mark, after that is just goes from from good to better and better.
The chemistry between Ben Kingsley and Téa Leoni is brilliant, they just fit so well together. Ben Kingsley's deadpan delivery of some really funny lines is superb.
Add in such great actors and Bill Pullman and Luke Wilson and you have what I think is a brilliant movie.
Most would probably not regard this as a Rom Com, but for me it is up there with the best and I have watched it from start to finish many times.
Easy 8/10 for me.
Mr. Right (2015)
OMG Funny
If you are like me and you are a Sam Rockwell, you will absolutely love this movie, I cannot believe it took me me 5 years to find this one, absolute gem.
Being a big fan of both Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell might help, but this movie is just downright funny, violent, but funny.
If you are looking for a light hearted rom com this is probably not for you, there is a bit of swearing and lots of violence, shooting and dead bad guys, but it really is super fun and just downright funny.
A great job by all involved. 9/10 for the laughs and being a feel good movie.
Peppermint (2018)
Definitely Worth Watching
When I clicked on this movie to watch I had no idea who was in it or what it was about, something I rarely or never do. Was I in for a surprise. I did not even recognise Jennifer Garner for at least the first 5-10 minutes of the movie, and that surprised me, she is on my list of must watch actors if I see her name in a movie.
This is one of those movies that grabs you from the start and just holds onto you to the end. Edge of seat stuff that has you rooting for the hero from start to finish.
Very well done and a movie that I could easily watch a second and third time.
Highly recommended. 8/10 for me.
Monsters of Man (2020)
OK But Not Great
I watched this without really knowing much about it, three things drew me to it, robots, Neal McDonough and the length. Normally in my reckoning movies over 90 minutes tend to be OK. This one met this condition, but it was a bit too long and could have easily been 20-30 minutes shorter and lose none of the story line. The acting wasn't brillant, but the actors did a good job. The CGI was good and didn't make the movie look cheap. Parts of the movie were a bit repetitive and the storyline has been done to death, but if you have a few hours to kill you could do worse than watch this.
5.5/10 would be my honest rating, it would score higher if it was a bit shorter.
IRL (2019)
Rubbish
This just had to have been made on a very low budget, the hand held camera with one camera from start to finish tells you that. It could easily have been done with one long take.
I read the reviews before attempting to watch this and some seemed genuine enough, but please, this was crap from start to finish. Way too much super close camera work wrecked it for a start, who wants to see the pores of someones face when they are talking on the phone?
As you get into the movie it is easy to see why the main subject is single.
Give this a miss, not worth wasting 90 minutes of your time. 2 stars is being generous.
Ever Decreasing Circles (1984)
DO NOT Give up
The first time I tried to watch this show I must have been in a bad mood, but I could not stand Richard Briers' character Martin and gave up after about 2 episodes.
Many years later (about 15-20) I was given the DVDs and decided to give it another go. Glad I did, it is bloody brilliant, my partner and I basically binge watched it over a few weeks, close to one of the best shows I have every watched.
So as the saying goes, if you at first you do not succeed, do not give up, second time round can be the charm and what you thought was a pigs ear can turn out to be a gem.
This is a GEM of a show. So many brilliant characters. All those featured on the poster are the ones, bloody brilliant.
Easy 9/10 and really probably a 10.
Never Have I Ever (2020)
Easy Binge
I heard about this show on the radio as I was falling asleep and the reviewer gave it 4.5/5
When I woke up I immediately looked for it and binge watched it in less than 3 hours.
While I am definitely not the targeted audience being a middle aged male, but it was a fun show that I highly recommend to anyone wanting some easy entertainment.
Probably not for those that do not like teen dramas, but this hit the spot for me.
Easy 8/10.
Bosch (2014)
Superb Show
This is one of those shows that is just about as good as it can get if you want a great mix of police drama, action and just downright great acting.
I have never read any of Michael Connelly's books...yet, but as with any TV adaptions if this is anything to go by his books must be brilliant.
Having just finished season 6 and looking forward with impatience to season 7, I hope this shows goes on for many years to come.
Everyone involved in this show does a superb job.
10/10 for me almost every season. 9.5/10 overall.
La dernière vague (2019)
Watch every episode
There is no use watching one episode and rubbishing it as at least 3 of the "reviewers" have done.
This show is a bit slow at times and some of the acting isn't perfect and can be a bit tedious, but in the end it is a good story. Maybe it is not up to the standard of Les Revenants, but it is still worth persevering and watching it to the end.
The idea behind the story is not new, humans are stuffing with nature all the time, nature is striking back and there have to be sacrifices.
I like French shows, they are simple straight forward and entertaining, this one is no exception.
If you get it, you will like it, if you don't, sorry but you are better off watching Hollywood bang bangs and writing 1 star reviews.
7/10 for me, and I would probably watch it again.
Mrs. Fletcher (2019)
Well worth the time
At only 30 minutes an episodes without advertising this is well worth the time. My only complaint is that it is too short.
Being a huge fan of Kathryn Hahn since Crossing Jordan in the early 2000's I will watch almost anything she is in. This is just one of those shows you will either love or hate, my partner is the opposite of me, she didn't like it.
This is timed well with the Me Too movement in full swing. I like that women are speaking out and putting males who don't treat women right in their place.
Men have gotten away with it for far too long.
I found this show very funny, also very sexy and sometimes sad and also it didn't try to be PC, but it is ultimately a really enjoyable show and well worth the 3.5 hours of watching if you are lucky enough to be able to binge watch it.
Bring on season 2, cant wait.
Jexi (2019)
Well Worth Seeing
At less than 80 minutes if you take out the credits, this is definitely a movie worth seeing if you like dumb fun and humour, be warned though this is not a film for everyone and if you don't like foul language you should avoid it.
While not normally a fan of Adam Devine, he does a really good job in this one. The addition of Michael Peña even on a small scale was excellent and very enjoyable. Rose Byrne as the voice of Jexi was also very well done with credit to the writers, the dialogue was just hilarious.
Make sure you keep watching after the credits roll, some really funny stuff to be missed if you don't.
An easy 7 for me. Very enjoyable a great laugh, but not for everyone.
The Outpost (2018)
Genuine Surprise Packet
If you are like me, you will most likely give this show away after watching the dreadfully amateurish acting in the first episode, all I can say is DON'T.
I can thank my partner for getting so much enjoyment out of this show and going back and binge watching the first season so we could watch the second season together. I did initially give up before even finishing the first episode, but she didn't.
This is one of those shows that gets better with each episode, the actors, mostly if not all, unknown, seem to grow into their parts as the show goes on, very similar to other low budget shows that start out with the acting a bit amateurish and get much better if you persevere. As I have been told over and over by my partner you have to stick with it past the first couple of episodes to really get entertained.
I now have a much better appreciation of low budget shows like this one, it has really grown on me and I look forward to season three.
Joker (2019)
Depressing and HIGHLY OVERRATED
After watching this movie with my wife we both came away feeling rather depressed and unsatisfied.
Joaquin Phoenix is without a doubt a brilliant actor and his performance shone though in this, but other than that it was very much an average movie for me. It just does not live up to the hype and if I was given a choice to see it again I would have no hesitation in declining.
Heath Ledger if he was alive today he would not have a worry, he is the true Joker and will always be in my eyes.
Joaquin Phoenix's performance is the only reason this gets a score higher than a 5.
Ghosts (2019)
A laugh a minute
I was lucky enough to be able to binge watch all 6 episodes of the first series. The only disappointment was that there were only 6 episodes.
There are so many good things going for this show, it really is a laugh a minute, no crudeness, just real laughs and funny situations all the way through.
Bring on series 2.
Proven Innocent (2019)
Much better than I thought it would be
I am not sure what all the other reviewers watched, but for me this was quite an interesting, if at times frustrating series to watch. Unlike most who have written reviews after one or more episodes I have watched all 13 of the first season.
As a bit of fan of Rachelle Lefevre and Candice Coke, so I am probably biased, it would have been nice to see a bit more of Candice Coke. Having said that I think my favourite characters were played by Vincent Kartheiser and Nikki M. James. Kelsey Grammer is always good, so he didn't surprise.
Like all TV Shows there are lot's of cliche moments and unbelievable moments, but if you are an experienced TV watcher, you should know to expect them and forgive them.
Season one had an ending, so the show could easily end where it finished, but an opening for another season was there to if that is in the works. Either way I enjoyed the show and if there is another season, bring it on, but it would not bother me if it is finished.
8/10 for me.
The Upside (2017)
Stands on its Own
Having seen the original more than five times I can say this easily compares in quality. The original Intouchables from 2011, is in French so you need to read subtitles which never worried me. It is brilliant so if you like this and don't mind subtitles find it and watch it.
Normally I am not a huge fan of remakes that the US does of successful foreign movies, but this is an exception to the rule and I will have no hesitation watching this again.
Ignore the bad reviews they either have not watched this or are just remake haters. This has everything a good movie should have and it is highly entertaining.
Bryan Cranston, Nicole Kidman and especially Kevin Hart are just superb, such a feel good movie with a very very good ending.
Just like I gave Intouchables a few years ago this is an easy 9/10 for me.
The Good Doctor: Faces (2019)
Superb Moving Episode
This show just gets better and better, well worth watching and I hang out each week to see the next episode. This one was probably up there with the best of the series or at least season 2.
Just supurb.
You (2018)
Creepy
Penn Badgley does and outstanding job taking creepy stalker to the next level.
It took me until episode 4 to really get into the show, after that it was a rollercoaster ride that had me holding my breath at times and on the edge of my seat others. This show has some truly evil characters besides the obvious one and very few innocents.
There were a few unbelievable moments, but it is rare for a TV show or movie not to have those.
Excellent show that I was lucky enough to be able to bing watch from start to finish.
The Rookie (2018)
Liking It So Far
As an unashamed Nathan Fillion fan, I didnt hesitate to watch the first two episodes of this, cliched as it may be it still held my attention for the first two episodes and hopefully it will continue.
Most of the characters are likeable or at least not hateful. There is chemistry between some of them and a bit of drama even though some of the action seems unrealistic. I loved Nathan Fillion in Castle and look forward to watching this show to see how it pans out.
Hopefully it keeps to the high standard it has started with.
God Friended Me: Error Code 1.61 (2018)
Very Average
Up until this episode the show was really good, funny and had me wanting more. This episode was really average and not up to par with the first 3, if it doesn't go back to the standard of the first 3 I don't think I will be watching for much longer.
The Fliss and Beaker characters let this episode down in a big way, but the main supporting characters performance level fell as well and it just did not work for me.
