A stunning piece of film-making
17 April 2009
No one could do this movie justice in a review- you just have to watch it. However, for those wanting bitesize details of what it's about they can read the next paragraph and skip the rest.

---The story follows a number of characters over two days as they go about their lives, lives which are caught on CCTV. They include a student and a teacher, two killers on the run, a store clerk and his mate, a womanising department store employee and a bullied insurance clerk. There's sex, lies, adultery, violence, abduction and death. By the end of the movie the paths of most of these often unrelated characters have crossed in the 3 main locations- a mall, a school, and a convenience store.---

After reading the other reviews I was still very much in the dark about this movie. At the time of writing this review some 45 people had given it zero while 36 gave it ten. The zero count was high enough not to be ignored whilst the ten count was low enough to be fake ratings by people involved with the movie, so I was a bit iffy about it. However it was the passion of the other reviewers that convinced me to give it a go.

After watching Look I can only assume that those giving it zero must be the type of moviegoers who lap up the shallow dross that Hollywood more often than not peddles out to the sleeping herds. So if you are one of those brain-dead masses then you probably won't think much of this movie.

BUT if you are more discerning, enjoy thought provoking material and sometimes despair at the apparent crumbling of western societal values you should find this to be as stunning, riveting and sickly voyeuristic as I did.

For me this film is a modern classic. It's a winding, weaving, surprising, intersecting story of vice, and of people sadly lacking in moral fibre. It lays bare the darkness that is within all of us. Because we view the film entirely through CCTV, it's unbiased, free of moral judgements and shows only pure truth.

Overall? A Stunning tour de force spewing forth the moral decay that is eating away at western civilisation.

The most fun I've had watching a film since shoot 'em up
30 May 2008
Remember in the days of VHS when certain places in a movie suffered from a degraded picture because you'd rewound and re-watched the sweet, glorious blood splatter scenes over and over. Well thank god for digital because you'll want to do that with this movie.

It is an unashamedly cheesy, revenge gore-fest of the likes I have never seen before. I would hazard a guess that this much blood has not been spilt on screen since the splatter-fests of the late seventies and early eighties, and perhaps not even then.

There is a story but it's secondary to the fun filled blood fest. In a nutshell it's about a tough school girl who hunts down the school bully son of a yakuza that killed her younger brother and his best mate. Along the way she loses an arm, gains a machine gun for the arm (like the leg in Planet Terror), loses her humanity, gains an ally and has to face down a drill bra- yes a drill bra, but that's one of the weaker moments.

Put 'Shoot 'em Up', 'Itchi the Killer', the 'Evil Dead' movies, and the goriest film you've ever seen into a blender with copious amounts of cheese, awful dialogue and cheap special effects and you've got some idea what this film is like. Then for a pleasant change give the action roles to women and you have a cult classic in the making. I rarely laugh out loud to anything but I did here on numerous occasions.

The level of violence, blood splatter, decapitations, dismemberment, and gore is outrageous, and if while watching it you yawn at some of the slow story telling scenes rest assured that you will not have to wait long for the violence to return. The finale has to be seen to be believed.

Best watched with your mates and a few beers. Highly recommended.

A decent cop thriller, but not in Training Day's league
27 May 2008
I've read some reviews on here that slag off this movie because they claim the plot is incoherent and makes no sense. Well I have to totally disagree with that, and can only assume that those reviewers have phenomenally low IQs.

The film follows a few days in the life of Keanu's character- an old school cop who ruthlessly takes out the bad guys and lies through his teeth to get the job done. In that sense he is a corrupt cop, but he's not on the take, and as the movie unfolds he discovers his ex partner is grassing him up to Internal Affairs and he must get to the bottom of a cop killing incident that increasingly stinks of blackmail, dirty money and cops betraying cops. I think that's as much as I can say without giving anything away.

My main criticism of this film is that for me, the plot and the twists were far too obvious. So if your one of those people like me who sees twists coming a mile off, but hates it when that happens, you may be disappointed. So I recommend either switching off your brain or giving yourself a congratulatory pat on the back when your guesses are gradually confirmed as the movie unfolds. You can then laugh at the idiots on IMDb who couldn't make sense of it.

There's plenty of shoot outs, some decent action, and an interesting slant on the Internal Affairs scenario. Admittedly many of the characters are clichés but what cop thriller isn't riddled with them? And besides, clichés are clichés because they are often spot on to reality. Hugh Laurie has a small but significant role as a 'House' version of an Internal Affairs officer. I was annoyed by the ending, in that certain faceless and unknown corrupt officials appear to end up being protected and not pay for their crimes, but on reflection I realise that had this story been a true one, then that would have been exactly what would have happened.

All in all a good effort, not in Training Day's league but let's face it that was something extraordinary. Don't listen to the dunce's that claim the plot is a mess and doesn't make sense, it's just that those reviewers are so thick they have to crap on anything they don't understand and really should be watching The Telly Tubbies instead.

Will be loved by the easily pleased who don't mind cliché upon cliché, poor plotting and script
22 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Most people who watch this will have a warm place in their hearts for the original 3 films. I count myself as one of those people. As a result of this soft and fuzzy feeling many people will be blind to the multitude of faults in this film and not feel that the level of 'suspension of disbelief' required to enjoy it is several steps too far. Their critical compass will be switched off. For those people that's great, they're lucky, they'll love this film probably as much as the others, and do you know what? I'm jealous of them for that. This fourth instalment has all the same ingredients as the previous films:- a grumpy old Indy, a younger side-kick, nasty enemy soldiers, chases, action set pieces, and a big finale. It was also nice to see Karen Allen reprise her role, she was always my favourite female love interest.

I watched this film as best as I could without already giving it a free pass because of what had gone before. I judged it on its merits and compared it to the numerous films of this type that have been made in the years since the last 'indy'. On that basis I was disappointed. In my view the acting and story was quite good, but the plotting was awful, as was the script, and there certainly wasn't as many laughs as should be expected in a film of this type. Movies have moved on since the original trilogy and I feel that it was stuck in a 'back in the day' mentality. The first hour consisted of every cliché and trope of the genre being clumsily thrown into the melting pot as if some child had written the plot and script and wanted to show off his pop culture knowledge. To be honest I was embarrassed for Spielberg.

The repetitive clichés one piled on top of the other, the appallingly dodgy plotting in the warehouse, the popular icon imagery, the 'better dead than red' demos, the Roswell tie in all made it seem like someone was in a contest to write the worst ever episode of 'Dark Skies'. There were also so many inaccuracies and dumb impossibilities of the type that most modern action adventure films of today do their utmost to exorcise from their scripts. It was lazy and sloppy writing through and through. I also felt there was a character relationship deficiency, or at least that the chemistry was lacking, there wasn't enough fire between them. In the first movie there was Karen Allen. In the second Kate Capshaw and the boy, and in the third there was Sean Connery. Shia LaBeouf and Ray Winstone were responsible for those types of interactions here but I felt they were lacking. I know these types of movies aren't meant to have twists or surprises but surely you aren't also supposed to be able to surmise every scene, act and the finale within minutes of the movie starting.

I strongly believe that if anyone watched this movie and Matthew Mcconaughey's 'Sahara' back to back it would be no contest as to which was more entertaining, funny, and action packed, as well as which had the best story, plot and script. It would be Sahara every time. I know I'm going to get negative feedback for this review but I'm just being honest and trying to review it with detachment and without my love of the previous movies creating a positive bias. It's a real shame. If only Spielberg had raised the bar in regards to story, plot and script to what we've come to expect in the 21st century this could have been an amazing film. In closing, having thoroughly slagged it off, I must add that the very final scene was quite spectacular from an 'FX eye candy' perspective.

Burn Notice (2007–2013)

excellent escapist stuff that knows how to entertain
23 April 2008
After completing episode 4 just now, I'm hooked. I think I'll probably finish the series tonight. Don't judge it on the pilot episode alone though because although good, it's the weakest of those that I've seen.

The show's main humour and style owes a lot to Monk and The Rockford Files. There are also comedic and plot devices reminiscent of The 'A' team, Macguiver, and The Equalizer. This hilarity is all served up upon a bed of Bourne Identityesque back story. There's even been the odd moment that I have been reminded of the BBC's The Hustle.

So if you like any of those shows you can just sit back and relax because you know you're going to be entertained.

The Premise:

A disavowed (under a Burn Notice) US spy is abandoned to his own devices in Miami with all his assets seized. To make ends meet while he tries to find out why he's been 'Burned', he agrees to take on a different job each episode that his talents are uniquely suited to. Matters are complicated by his ex-girlfriend (with IRA connections) who turns up, his semi-retired friend and colleague spying on him for the Feds, and his hypochondriac mother pestering and nagging him all the time. In addition to the weekly 'job' these characters get involved in each episode, another piece of the 'Burn Notice' puzzle is discovered or tracked down. This too can come with complications, and let's also not forget that since he has been 'Burned' he no longer has the protection of the US government and is a free target. Anybody from his past could show up.

The show has plenty going on all the time and is never boring. His dysfunctional family adds massively to the proceedings and makes our hero more of a 3D character. There are many clichés and influences throughout the show but they just add to the fun. The result is a sharp, clever, and witty comedy action drama show.

Could have been so much better if the writer could write
6 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I don't see how anyone can give this film a good rating and to compare it favourably with True Romance is an insult to that movie and film-making in general. The plot is you're standard 'couple stumble across wads of cash and go on the run'. There's nothing new in this story but that is not what makes it a bad film.

What makes this cringe-worthy viewing is the absolutely sloppy writing. The characters (all of them) are made to do such stupid things like leaving bags of cash wide open for all to see, not once, not twice, not thrice...And other things like buying a massively conspicuous getaway car, not locking a car with wads of cash in it. Our heroine in a maid's uniform with a massive and fresh gash on her head allowed to walk past a Police checkpoint who are on the look out for such a person. The list is absolutely endless, and there's even an apparently abandoned but fully functioning, rust and dereliction free power plant.

I had given this 3/10 but now that I've written about it I realise that is too generous 2 is all it's worth despite the odd amusing reference to True Romance that has been slipped in.

Shrooms (2007)

An enjoyable little movie
8 March 2008
Without a big budget this film was always going to have to run just to stand still in the eyes of many slasher fans and I think it's being unfairly criticized by reviewers here. It's nigh on impossible to come up with an original take on the teens lost in the woods slasher but everyone does their best here.

In a nutshell the plot is some bright shiny fit young friends travel from the US to meet up with their Irish college buddy and to camp out in the woods and take a trip. All the usual clichés and tropes apply including the inbred nutters living in the woods (a great performance by them by the way), with the added element of magic mushies, so they never know wot's real or not and you the viewer don't know whether it's supernatural or just sick puppies doing the killing. Because of the low budget there is little in the way of gore, and it's not scary, but I say that as someone who doesn't think any movies are scary.

I really enjoyed it. The direction and cinematography are good, the script is devoid of all the usual crappy cheesy lines that you get in US films of this type and the added shroom element is a bonus. At one point there is a talking cow which was nice! (not unlike severance). My only real criticism was about the tripping beginning instantly after people take one shroom. I had assumed everyone would sit round the campfire and let the tripping commence but was pleasantly surprised it didn't go that way.

One of the reviewers here seems to have got offended that there were two inbred nutters in the woods that were Irish- Jesus man get a life apparently there's never been a single person in Ireland with a mental health problem! He also states that they were too cheap for FX, hello limited budget! another reviewer seems to think this is a propaganda movie against the dangers of taking mushrooms a la 'reefer madness', well that's absolute rubbish.

Finally this film gets 2 extra points from me because I didn't see the ending coming, and the last time a film surprised me with a twist was Fight Club.

Know you're gonna get a standard slasher film, but without the gore of the big budget US films and you shouldn't be disappointed.

I tried but couldn't like this...I just didn't care.
8 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I always try to support or fight for low budget or independent film and from what I understand this is a low budget one, and for that it should be commended. To be fair it's not overly obvious that money was tight. However that's not the reason I didn't like this film.

The plot in a nutshell is troubled teenager fresh out of rehab rejoins family in a new town. Cue an urban legend about a school bus stopping on the railroad tracks and a train smashing into it and killing all involved. Legend has it that if you put your car in neutral on the tracks the ghosts of the dead children will move your car off leaving behind fingerprints that you can see if you cover your car with talc beforehand.......yawn! Then there's a twist that's so blatant you want to shout at the scriptwriter, and a dark figure killing people all of a sudden. So there's nothing original in the story, it's cliché ridden, but acted okay...so far so average.

The problem I had with the film was there wasn't a nice person in it, I couldn't have cared less about any of them including the heroine. I found myself refusing to give up on the film in case some good came of it, but desperately clock watching and wishing it would finish. It drags, it treats you like you're stupid, and you want them all to die.

I wouldn't recommend it but it's not bad enough to say avoid like the plague.

Unearthed (2007)
5/10
better than the other reviewers would have you believe
6 March 2008
I'm the first to be critical of these types of -monsters on the loose in isolated community films-, but if you can get past the stunningly bad cgi monster there's a reasonable amount to like here. There's nothing original but name me one that is original in the last 20yrs, there aren't any. The stories are the same it's how they're handled that varies.

The story:- Out in the dry wastelands of America an archaeological dig unearths and sets loose an ancient monster not seen for 900yrs. Several outsiders stop for gas which has run out due to the tanker being attacked by said monster en route to gas station. They mix with and are stranded with several locals, all of whom become stranded and spend the night fighting for survival.

On the whole the acting is good but unusually Goss seems to struggle with his dialogue as if his heart's not in it. However I blame that on the director and the script rather than Goss. There's very little in the way of excess, unnecessary or cheesy dialogue, which is always a big plus in my eyes. There is also a totally unnecessary flashback thread running through the film. The camera work is a bit shaky and often too dark which does at times detract from the fun. The musical score is fine. The body count is low because there are few characters but the deaths are nice and gruesome. There's a great Eddie Murphy wannabe who gets wot he deserves (and provides the only laugh).

There are two big problems with this film as far as I can see.

1. The monster effects are on a par with the original Jason and the Argonauts from way back when - seriously they're that bad. The actual design of the monster is rubbish as well, it copies too much from alien and it's head is laughable with eyes and teeth all over the place. If you can imagine an alien working at a circus as a clown you'll get some idea.

2. There's a local biologist who keeps telling everyone she knows nothing but keeps coming up with the answers via massive jumps in her conclusions and it just gets stupid when she finds a Geiger counter lying around and then proclaims 'I've got a uranium extractor back at the house.'

If you can ignore these things, and accept that this was done on a tight budget, this is an okay movie.

I watched this back to back with 'Living Hell' and what confuses the hell out of me is that that piece of total garbage got the thumps up from the IMDb reviewers and an average score of 4.7 while this gets a total roasting from the reviewers and an average of 4.8. I feel 4.8 is fair for this film (coz i'm critical) but only if living hell received 0.0 otherwise this deserves more.

Living Hell (2008 TV Movie)

interesting beginning ruined by....everything!!
6 March 2008
The movie begins well with an interesting if not original take on the outbreak/monster escapes genre. However it doesn't remain any good for any length of time. The story premise is not bad, but the plot is terrible, the script is abysmal, most of the acting is dreadful, Erica Leerhsen is okay but how John Schaech's completely wooden and cheesy acting ever gets him work is beyond me. The physical effects are okay but the cgi is totally below par.

The premise: a boy is branded on his hands by his mother just before she kills herself and her husband. The boy never forgets level whatever it was and vault 12 because it's on his hands!! Cue years later and the army base which the message relates to is being decommissioned and the boy now a man remembers his mother's warning "don not disturb vault 12" so he drives into the base to warn em all.

Fans of intelligent sci-fi will despair. Brits (we're an intelligent bunch) don't even bother unless you want ninety minutes of shouting at the screen at the stupidity of it. But if that's your bag then go ahead, it's probably worth watching just for this gratuitous soft core 'cover me in blood' scene, like Arnie covered himself in mud in predator- it's so cringeworthingly bad they all deserve an award.

Or you could just skip to that scene and save yourself all the trouble - roughly 1hr 10 mins in.

oodles of gory goodness
24 February 2008
This is touted as a true story. I certainly hope that's only the marketing department saying that, coz make no mistake this is a gory gruesome tale.

It's your standard teen horror with a bunch of campers falling foul in hicksville. The film doesn't do much different to all the others out there apart from wallowing in the gore and torture. I've seen hundreds of films like this and either laugh at the kills or shout at the screen at the character's stupidity. There are very few I find unsettling and that make my hands damp and my heart beat faster but this was one of them, along with the original Texas Chainsaw. I can't quite account for why I felt this way and still do now 15 minutes after it's finished.

Maybe it's the oodles of blood and gore, maybe it's the possibility that this really happened, maybe the writer and director just did a better job than normal, or maybe it's this innocent song that keeps playing throughout the film whenever there is violence. Not since Carpenter's Halloween music has any been so effective in a slasher.

This film is certainly not perfect, but by god it's a league above the usual stuff.

Overall, slow start, but highly recommended and hard to criticise, my nerves are still jarred.

WTF!!!!...home made movie nothing of interest here
24 February 2008
This film has the look, story, script, and acting of a bad student project.

There is nothing of interest here. In fact personally I would be embarrassed to have my name attached to this film.

I won't go into detail because there is entirely no point. It's not even bad enough or tongue and cheek enough to be good.

I'm all for independent films and there are often some real gems, many of which are amongst my all time favourites which and easily outclass big budget movies. I'm thinking of classics such as Pi, Primer, Man Bites Dog, Das Experiment, and The Magician, to name but a few. But sadly it is not the case here. This director is going to have to seriously up his game if he wants a career.

Complete cringe-worthy clichéd pooh from beginning to end.

Don't waste your time.

nice little Brit supernatural movie big on atmosphere low on FX
22 February 2008
Us Brits have got reasonably good at producing limited budget scary flicks like this where a group of armed protagonists are stuck in an isolated location and have to fight supernatural forces (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Deathwatch). I enjoyed most of this movie. It only started to get ridiculous towards the end. Anyone who gets the twists in movies easily will have the entire film sussed in the first twenty minutes, and anyone who doesn't might be pleasantly surprised by it. Either way it makes it difficult to comment directly without spoiling it.

However I can say this. A rag tag group of mercenaries are hired on false pretences to accompany and protect a scientist in search of something in an abandoned bunker in Eastern Europe. We get to this point fairly quickly without a laborious preamble. Once there, strange things begin to happen and the soldiers begin to get picked off. There is a reason for these goings on, and to start with it is handled quite well but the writer/director messed up big time by not exploring it more and because early on walls and doors are no obstacle to the enemy, and claymores and trip wires remain untriggered. The enemy does not do what they want it to, it cannot be predicted and comes an goes in small groups. However in the climax the walls and doors are an obstacle and suddenly the enemy is very helpful in it's own possible demise, setting off claymores and tripwires and coming at them en masse and predictably.

Additionally I would very much like to have seen more exploration of why these things were happening and the motivation of the enemy. But alas there isn't and in the final act it just becomes silly, their actions show they have an agenda but earlier on it was explained that they were just doing what they knew.

Because of budget limitations there are very few special effects but be clear this isn't a 'low budget' film with all the negatives that go with that label. what is done is done well, it's very atmospheric, and the lighting and cinematography is very good. The actors all put in decent performances, there's a couple of good lines, one very iconistic shot with a flag (you'll know when you see it) and some good gruesome deaths.

All told this is quite a good movie given it's limitations, but what a shame the story gets silly in the final act. I came away having enjoyed it but for once in my life wishing it had had some big US money behind it.

Worth watching. Not as good as Dog Soldiers, or The Descent but better than Deathwatch and The Cave.

Battle Royale with death row convicts
21 February 2008
Lets start by saying this isn't a bad film. I enjoyed watching it.

A bunch of death row convicts from around the world are given one last chance at life on a south sea island. Ten go in one comes out al la Thunderdome! All the while being watched with four hundred cameras streaming the show live to the net.

There are no surprises, no twists, it's cliché ridden, you don't really care about the characters, and you know who is going to die straight away and very early on what order they'll die in. Having said that there's plenty of action and some sweet deaths. Yes it does borrow from Battle Royale (though this film is better) but newsflash to battle royale fans that was far from original itself.

My only real annoyance was the time wasted cutting to the US authorities debating whether to take any action about the show. For much of the film I also felt the same about the scenes involving the shows crew camped out in the jungle filming and running the show. However towards the end I was glad of it because of what happens to them.

The film raises issues about television in the same way that that the classic film 'Network' did. I just which they'd have delved a little deeper in that area.

My favourite thing about the film was that everyone got what they deserved, there was none of this bad guy escaping justice thing. I recommend watching this provided you accept it for what it is, a thrill ride NO, but a violent action film YES.

no budget home made rubbish
18 February 2008
I can only assume this is an independent 'no budget' film produced as some sort of student project. It is appalling and I only lasted 10 minutes with it. How they managed to get any of the actors to do this is beyond me.

The look of this film is like some cut video sequences from PC games of the early nineties. I wouldn't be surprised if this was made in 1999 (before the millennium) and has been released now with some cut and paste background CGI stolen from elsewhere.

Don't believe the average star rating, I suspect it's artificially high from people involved in the project rating it highly.

what a waste of time.

Day Watch (2006)

Disappointing sequel
15 February 2008
Daywatch was a rare gem so I was eagerly awaiting part 2 of the trilogy (at least there was originally meant to be three films).

The action and special effects when you get them are superb, but there's nowhere near enough for a film like this. I was hoping for an unfolding story arc continuing from the first film, but there is very little in the way of additional story and plotting. The same cast reprise their roles, but the many interesting characters set up in the first film are neither explored nor utilised to effect here, and often disappear from the film only to return at key moments. The whole affair ends up feeling like some kind of vampire mafia melodrama with two factions of the same family vying for justice under the code.

In it's favour, there are some great moments of humour, a great 'Damien the Omenesque' performance in the closing stages, and a cool but far too little and too late climax.

This never fulfilled the promise of the first film. Overall a story going nowhere slowly and happy to do so.

But hey if your uncritical, undemanding, and easily surprised when watching films you'll probably love it. Afterall everyone else seems to think more highly of it than me. It's certainly not bad enough to stop me seeing the last instalment, if indeed there is still to be one.

Everyone is right when they say you need to have seen the first one. It should also still be fresh in your memory.

Exactly what it says on the tin.
15 February 2008
After watching Daywatch tonight (the disappointing sequel to Nightwatch), I desperately needed some- leave your brain at the door comedy action. This hit the spot superbly. It's Fantastic over the top tongue n cheek action right from the word go, sprinkled here and there with quality one liners and visual gags.

Nice to see Clive Owen in such a role, and nice to see a British anti-hero not only keeping his accent, but also retaining UK English as opposed to US English. It comes as no surprise the writer/director is from Blighty and now he's on my radar I'll be checking out all his future material.

John Woo meets Guy Ritchie. Sit back, don't linger on the holes (they're part of the fun) and enjoy the ride.

My only annoyance was the odd cheap snippet of CGI n pasting otherwise 10/10.

Refund please! Of my money, my thirty minutes and my liberty!
15 February 2008
Within the first 5 minutes you know exactly how this film is gonna go down, and believe me it continues going down all the way. Well for the first 25 minutes it does, I couldn't bear to watch anymore of this inane drivel than that.

The script and story is so bad that I had no option but to either burn down the cinema or go calm down with an early pint. The detectives were very understanding, but they still think I should have opted for the pint. I think it was worth it, nobody got burnt and they say I'll be out in under 2 years, so job's a goodun!

This film caters to the lowest common denominator and completely misses the potential of such a great subject matter. I didn't care that it had been explored many times before on screen and in print I just wanted to be entertained, but alas it wasn't to be. The guys behind Primer or even Darren Oronofsky (of Pi fame) should have been handed this project.

The only redeeming features here are that sexy girl from The OC and the jump FX, but neither were enough to allow me to keep my zippo in my pocket.

Don't waste your time or money unless you're a pyromaniac then you'll get immense pleasure and an extended rent free stay at her majesty's pleasure (time at the State Pen, for all you Bush lubbers).
