Morse is a pathetic character.
I've loved the "Inspector Lewis" and "Endeavour" series but they are miles beyond the original series in the quality of scripts and the character development. Aside from too many of the plots just being silly, the Morse character is annoying. He's hit on a female murder suspect or a close relative of the deceased in every episode I've watched and never taken no for an answer. I get it that it was filmed in the 1980s and 1990s. A slip or two over a matter of many years might be forgiven but the constancy of the plot device and how it always distracts Morse makes him look like a 12-year-old with a very poor emotional IQ. He's also a whiner.
Death in Paradise: Episode #10.2 (2021)
Who was in charge of ruining one of my favorite series? The new DI is so annoying I can barely watch his scenes. The other three DIs had exceptional deductive skills and appealing personalities. Even Ben Miller, in his silly black suits, was endearing, especially once his character developed romantic feelings for Camille. Ralf Little's character is whiny even when he's working on solving the mystery out loud.
The secondary lead replacements have all had less personality than those they replaced. Danny John-Jules's exit was a particular loss. Shyko Amos brought a bit of humor back to the show but she was sacked at the end of last season. The Catherine character always provided warmth and mature sensuality but she actress seems to have fewer scenes and boring lines. Finally, Little's character has no chemistry with the commissioner. He's even turned Harry into just a lizard - although that's probably the director's fault.
Little is so boring that I just finished watching this episode and I can't remember his character's name.
The writing is terrible The direction is terrible. The casting of Little is terrible. Bakare is a mediocre actor. The new teen conman/police trainee is a stock character.
If it doesn't improve, I'm going to watch the earlier seasons instead. I'm going to warn that there's a spoiler even though it's obvious almost from the beginning.
I gave the episode two stars only because the scenery is still gorgeous.
The Quiet Man (1952)
John Wayne - rode hard and put away wet.
John Wayne, at forty-five, is looks far too old for the role in a movie that has much to recommend it - including gorgeous scenery, fine direction, and marvelous portrayals by the supporting cast. What it is not is a romance.
I've watched this film a number of times. Even before Turner Classic Movies and various streaming platforms, it showed up on television every St. Patrick's Day. I love the stars, Wayne, O'Hara, and McLaglen in other roles but Wayne is so physically abusive toward O'Hara and dismissive of her that it made me uncomfortable even when I was a child. No doubt that type of behavior wasn't that uncommon in the time and place in which the film is set (1920's rural Ireland) but I cringe when the "hero" drags the heroine off the train and through the fields, stopping to kick her in the rear, before shoving her at McLaglen's feet.
I don't even enjoy the fight scene as much as I used to and I remember thinking it was hilarious.
A re-casting cock-up.
John Nettles had enough charisma to make every episode worth wathching, even if it's poorly written. Neil Dudgeon (in his first episode as Nettles' replacement DCI)) has none. He's not charismatic or physically attractive, and he kills any witty line he's given. The loving, passionate relationship between he and his wife (Fiona Dolman) isn't believable. It takes me out of the story for that scene - unless Sykes is also in the scene.
The UK is full of excellent actors who can carry a series. Dudgeon is not one of them. I know he's been a successful lead in one or two other series. which baffles me. I continue to watch the series despite him.
The low rating I've given this episode reflects my disappointment in Dudgeon's casting as well as his character's rude, dismissive treatment of Jason Hughes' character, who's oddly portrayed as an idiot. How he went from a capable DS in the previous episode to a wholly inept, even bumbling, investigator was the biggest mystery in this episode. It took away from the shiny guest stars and the antique cars, both of which were superb.
Sykes is the best new character added in the entire series.
Attractive leads and scenery
I'll keep watching for the attractive stars and the spectacular scenery. It reminds me of "Death in Paradise" with less appealing supporting actors and bad writing. The Met supervisor comes across as unprofessiona, incompetent and weird. Who would have sent a single, female detective to transport such an important witness internationally. What if he had to pee? The Mallorcan boss can't carry off the the role. It desperately needs a Danny-John Jules - type sidekick and a good theme song.
They should spend a few bucks on more able British guest stars. Aidan McArdle gave this episode a lot of weight.
The lead should never be absolutely stupid. Miranda should have shot McArdle's character in the leg(s) before saving her partner from falling down the cliff. It would have required better writing but she wouldn't have looked unable to make a good decision in a crisis.
I really like Looman. He has a light, teasing touch and he's very easy on the eye which makes him head and shoulders above the guy who plays Hathaway.
Perry Mason (2020)
dark first episode
Why did they call this series "Perry Mason?" Other than using a couple of the names, Della Street and Paul Drake, it's not at all like the Burr series.
Matthew Rhys looked as if he hadn't had a bath,shaved or changed his underwear in a month, in the first episode (the only one I've seen) and I had a hard time getting past that.
Rhys' character kept taking pictures in very low light scenes without using a flash.It's such a simple error that the director should have caught. That took me out of the story, too.
Unlike the below review, the implication that he was a WWI vet is believable. The series takes place just thirteen years after the end of the war. If he was eighteen when he left the army, he would be just thirty-one. Rhys is about fifteen years older than that IRL and he looks every bit of it.
I didn't connect with any characters. Not even the parents of the kidnap victim were sympathetic. The production values were far below other HBO series such as Boardwalk Empire" and "True Blood," two series made much more interesting by the settings, clothes, cars, etc.
The dialogue was boring and there were too many characters to allow for any character to develop, other than Rhys' character. We got a lot of information on him but it felt awkward.
On second thought, I may not watch any future episodes. I have access to the second episode now and have no interest in watching it.
Designing Women (1986)
Did the reviewers actually watch this show?
I'm stunned that so many people rated this show a 7. I watched it from the first to the last episode and laughed out loud in nearly every episode that had the four original stars. Like The Golden Girls, it was a show about women for women. If men watched, they learned an awful lot about how women are complex individuals, which is not the way they're often portrayed on television.
I don't think I saw more than a few episodes that should have been rated a seven during the seasons the early seasons. Most were between 8.5 and 10.
This is one of my top five favorite shows and I've been watching television for 63 years.
The Road Home for Christmas (2019)
It doesn't have to be Casablanca to get a 10!
I rate movies based on what I expect from them. For me, this was a 9 but I've given a number of Hallmark and Lifetime Xmas movies , even though it's far behind "White Christmas." There are a limited number of storylines for any inexpensive tv movie romance, that takes place at Xmas - so the rater who complained about the basic plot being overused. It is what it is.
I liked this one, in particular, because of its plethora of great music, especially the jazz Xmas stuff. The leads were appealing, the story sweet but not schmaltzy. It didn't get a 10 from me because I didn't tear up, and Marla Sokoloff, whom I usually enjoy, was a little uneven.
I'd buy the music if it were available.
Major Crimes (2012)
I miss the much edgier "The Closer" with Kyra Sedgwick. but she lives on in the team.
The continuing cast of funny but extremely capable guys.
The investigations were almost always interesting. Sharon Raydor was a cagey investigator (but she was no closer).
I loved that they solved the last case, which became increasingly complex and interesting.
I like Mary McDonnell as an actress but the Sharon Raydor character was too professional to be very interesting, the vast majority of the time. Even her clothes and her glasses were perpetually boring. She had great hair though.
I realize the title of this show is different but it's still a continuation of "The Closer." I missed the very quirky character played by Kyra Sedgwick. She occasionally annoyed me when she was pathologically self-absorbed or when she manipulated Fritz but I loved the way she boxed in her suspects. Raydor's methods were more analytical and much less fun.
Along with the shocking and bizarre ending, the character of Rusty was painful. He was too much, too often, and for way too long.
My Summer Prince (2016)
Why do supercilious people not only watch Hallmark movies but take the time to write a review panning it? Those reviews, more often than not, slam all Hallmark movies, so the reviewer knows what to expect. It's irritating. I don't take the time to review most of the movies and television I watch so it's a puzzle that others spend time on these movies that they consider beneath them.
Someone did an analysis of IMDb ratings because women-oriented material is nearly always rated significantly lower than the most juvenile of material directed toward men. It's been seen in the Rotten Tomatoes site and the Netflix ratings. I tend to think it's passive-aggressive teens or young men who probably spend all day giving bad reviews to anything done by or for women.
Imo, I think Cole and Turner have amazing chemistry. They're both attractive but Turner's more interesting with the English accent. The actors, including Sirtis and Holly handle the wittier than usual banter quite well. The production values were awful but you can't have everything. I got exactly what I wanted. It was two hours of pleasant entertainment. I like that Cole and Turner are both good looking and well-matched in height. I have a hard time enjoying the pic when a tall woman is matched with a shorter man and the director is inconsistent in trying to conceal that difference.
I loved this movie when I was a child but it's hard to watch now. I've always been uncomfortable with men hitting women in movies but I had to grow up to realize that there are surely men in this world who hit their wives, thinking nothing of it because John Wayne was a hero, and he spanked Maureen O'Hara twice in two different movies. I watched this film again, today, and it's just not a film I can really enjoy anymore.
Unleashing Mr. Darcy (2016)
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels!
This movie gets lots of points for its attractive hero and the gorgeous dogs. It lost points for the wimpy, hyper-critical heroine. It didn't make sense that she was so wimpy when she first had problems at work and just plain snotty to a man who had given her no reason to be. In the Austen book, Elizabeth had heard Darcy make some very snide comments about her family and friends. As another reviewer said, this could have been so much better.
Love, Once and Always (2018)
I've watched a hundred or more Hallmark movies. This was one of the few that I have deleted before finishing it. I gave it two stars because I like Amanda Schull, who can pull off a romantic role. I found the male lead so unlikeable that I chose not to spend more time watching a light romance, when the hero is just plain mean. Hallmark movies often are based on the exact kind of conflict as used in this movie. One of the keys to the movie's success is a hero who disagrees with the heroine but is charming enough to make the viewer want to get to know him further. Andrew Walker handles this kind of role superbly and did so in a movie first shown within the last year. Porte is not charming and it's not the script in the part that I watched.
I agree with the other reviewer who pointed out that the "mansion" is ugly. It also is nothing like the mansions built in Rhode Island by American tycoons during the Gilded Age.
We need a rule.
Actors need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask these questions.
1) Am I under thirty-five? 2) Am I handsome? 3) Does my beard fill in completely? 4) Do I have the self-discipline to keep my beard well trimmed? 5) Again, am I handsome?
If the answer to those questions is not a firm yes, that actor must refuse to be shot with the kind of whiskers that make them look like they haven't bathed. The lead actor in this movie may be self-disciplined about shaving but he's a firm no on the remainder. Therefore, he must either cease seeing himself as someone whose looks can be enhanced by the kind of scruff.
This movie would have been more relaxing if the lead actor had asked himself those questions. He should also button another button on his shirt and reconsider the necklace.
Love on Safari (2018)
The story was thin but that's not rare for Hallmark movies. The lead male actor was neither attractive nor a good actor and that was the main problem for me. There was no romantic energy in this film at all and I've seen Chabert strike sparks with a plethora of male leads. That bit of poor casting really cost this film.
The animals, the scenery, and the South African cast were wonderful. In fact.
