Heroine (2012)
3/10
The biggest disappointment of this year
22 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Heroine... the movie by Madhur Bhandarkar of so many good movies (the last one being Fashion). It has been in the news since the day they were hunting for their cast. The whole Aishwarya Rai Bachchan episode, Her opting out of the movie, the media hyping up the whole issue because of her pregnancy. Ironically, this movie shows exactly what kind of 'waves' need to be made in order for a movie to work. It makes me think whether all that buzz prior to shooting this movie was fabricated.

Any how, I was looking forward to this. As a regular cine-goer I refrained myself from watching the promos because I always want to be completely surprised by a movie I look forward to. When I was at the screening and the first half was about to end, I cursed myself for not looking at the promos, it was so hard to sit through it. I am a very patient person (especially when it comes to cinema, I am in the field myself). It felt like someone was torturing me, like I was captured in a cell, I wanted to leave because of the unbearable screenplay and Kareena Kapoor, who can act when given the right movie, but this... this NO... this was only Kareena Kapoor crying from start to end in a very not natural and annoying way.

The story - Absolutely sorry to say that there was nothing spectacular, special or new in this movie. It is Fashion, but only this time it is about the movie world. Very simple, a successful actress, blinded and stubborn natured goes through tough situations and screws up more and more in stead of progressing.

Characters - All the characters have been written so badly. I am going to start off with our 'Heroine'- Kareena Kapoor. A character can be very interesting if it is described as stubborn, hotheaded and impulsive. In this case it was definitely not interesting, it was annoying to look at such a character the whole 2,5 hrs. There is no progression in the character, she learns but doesn't use her experience in future problematic situations. The viewer may wonder, why am I watching this... oh well there might be a lesson to this at the end of the movie. Yes, there is, be sane when you get famous. I feel it all could have been told differently and that the character could have been written in such a way that makes us feel pity for Mahi Arora (Kareena).

Aryan Khanna (Arjun Rampal)- This character was written a little better and also cast well. Arjun Rampal suits the role of a very successful superstar, he plays the part with conviction and confidence. In his character there is progression, which is nice to see. He understands his mistakes and genuinely tries to change. This pleases the viewers.

Angad Paul (Randeep Hooda) - Angad was a fine character to get to know. He was someone who was trying to help Mahi but lost his patience because of her stupidity, Randeep did an excellent job and is surely making it to the list of top actors slowly.

The rest - What was the need for all the gay characters in the movie? Not every costume designer is homo-sexual, this is such a stereotype setting. All the celebrities in the movie portrayed to be bitchy, selfish and political in order to gain personal success. Really? What was the need, it is not exactly like that. Humility exists, also in the world of films.

Divya Dutta as Pallavi portrayed a stereo type media person who 'supposedly' knows how to get things done. Such an annoying character.

Shahana Goswami as Promita was awesome....until the lesbian part of the movie. Seriously what did it add to the story? Nothing it all. I face palmed during the scene Kareena and Shahana were feeling sexy for each other.

Ranveer Shorey as Tapanda was great, he portrayed the Bengali passionate filmmaker so well that I was looking forward to his scenes constantly, kudos! Sanjay Suri as Abbas Khas - He tried to portray SRK in my opinion, well no it did not work. Sanjay Suri knows how to ooze charm, where was it in this film? SRK has charm? DoP - some scenes were shot well, but overall I thought it was a mess the way some scenes were captured.

Music - Heroine could have used a chart buster, Halkat Jawani being the most hummed song from the album didn't really work for me in the movie. Poorly shot and disappointing choreography by Remo D'Souza.

Screenplay - was there one at all? On the whole, stay away from this movie, it is going to ruin 2.5 hrs of your life and you are going to regret it. The 3 stars I am giving are only for Randeep Hooda, Arjun Rampal and Ranveer Shorey. Madhur Bhandarkar has turned me into someone who will now not look forward to his films anymore. I am angry for the way he portrayed the film industry, it is not a shitty place! Disappointed :(

Raavan (2010)
4/10
Raavan : the biggest disappointment this year, and I wasn't even expecting anything!
18 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I just returned from the Raavan. I went there with zero expectations but somewhere I had a feeling that Abhishek would surprise me since Mani Ratnam and Abhishek made a good team and delivered a beautiful movie like Guru before.

60 minutes into the movie, I couldn't connect with anything in the movie. This is not Mani Ratnams territory, the way he told the story is just not him. Also, they tried to create an awesome character called Beera, with his own habits and expressions, but making AB do the different gestures with his hand, and making him do the 'effective' expressions like they did, made him basically look like a fool.

Aishwarya was only good in HDDCS till today, I still believe she can not act. In this movie she proved yet again that she is not very convincing, her characterisation is not up to the mark, she doesn't leave a proper impression.

All the supporting cast was just jumping around weird and definitely not powerful, actingwise. Govinda was wasted in this movie, I mean I expected so much from him being 'Hanuman' in this movie.

The action is just not fit for 2010, I still cant believe Bollywood shoots action scenes in which the cable on the shirt of the stunting actors is overclearly visible.

The only plus in his movie is the music, and cinematography. I basically laughed throughout this movie the whole time with my buddies because they also didn't connect with the footage.

In the end of the screening, all of the people (300) applauded very sarcastically, I never heard that before during any movie. I guess this was not just a disappointment for me.

Advice : skip this one in the theatres and save your money for something useful! Watch it on DVD within a year or two, you are not missing anything!

Thumbs down 4/10

Kites (I) (2010)

Kites : This kite will fly high!
22 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I see a lot of negative reviews, one thing in common of all those negative reviews is the fact that their location is India, all the positive reviews are coming from western countries. I believe it is quite true when I say that the Indian audience were somewhat annoyed because they had to read the subtitles throughout the movie, the Indian audience is simply not used to reading subs throughout their own Bollywood film, it's alright when they have to read it during Hollywood movies. That point was a boiling point for them throughout the movie, secondly... I believe they were surprised that there was nothing Indian in this movie besides the Hindi language, I mean ; no sarees, no cultural stuff, no touching feet or whatever.. I can understand that these people can't admire the movie anymore for what it is.

I personally loved the whole concept, it is a new, fresh, original movie coming from India. Hrithik Roshan is always a good choice, though I didn't like his previous few movies (Krrish, Dhoom2, Jodhaa Akbar) I absolutely connected with this one and loved his performance. Barbara Mori is a discovery, I think this is the first time she has got such international exposure, now new doors will open up for her either in Hollywood or Bollywood, I would like to see her in more movies! Some say that the music was just bad, I wouldn't say that, the music is perfect for a Kites kind of movie. I don't expect Rajesh Roshan making songs like he did for Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish, Karan Arjun, Kaho Na Pyar Hai etc. Zindagi ek pal, Dil kyon yeh mera, Fire, Kites in the sky... all these tracks gel very well with the scenes, especially because there is no lipsyncing (which im a big fan of!). Nicholas Brown is another discovery, this guy can act, although I believe Hindi is not his language he tried to speak it well for his dub sessions. Kabir Bedi was powerful. Kangana Ranaut looked a bit weird in the movie, and I don't understand what is wrong with her voice or her English. She was good in Fashion, but I don't understand her being in the movie. She hardly has 4/5 minutes altogether.

The cinematography is simply mindblowing, the movie took us to various locales which we have never seen in a Bollywood movie before. Therefore the funnily done action chases (with funny i mean it was a little pathetic!) were looking a bit real and cool. Anurag Basu has set a new trend, a new standard, just like movies in the past few months have already done; Dev D, Wake Up Sid, 3 Idiots, Rocket Singh and now Kites. Anurag has grown more as a director, his last movies weren't bad, but I couldn't quite connect with them. Kites did the trick!

My only complaint about this movie is; did the cars in the action scenes really need to explode directly when they touched another car, or banged into one? When Hrithik released the cars on the roads to attack the police, couldn't the police hit the brakes? You could clearly see that the cars were rolling towards the police, and they didn't do anything! The action scenes revolving around the chase could have been a lot better. In the ending when Hrithik shoots everyone with his machinegun, in the rain... i stared towards the screen through because that shot was just BEAUTIFUL. The rain, the silence, the background score.. wow! So there the action factor was hiked up a little bit for me.

All in all, if you want to enjoy the evolution of Bollywood, the maturing of Bollywood, the new Bollywood. Be sure to watch this movie! Kites is all good, and will soar high in the sky!

Amazing!
3 February 2010
Bollywood is evolving! Sure, masala films are absolutely part of Bollywood and should be there. But there should also be films with an international appeal, so that people who have weird thoughts about Indian cinema can come to know that we DO make sensible films too!

Rocket Singh is definitely the best attempt of 2009! Ranbir Kapoor having two smash hits under his belt made the producers think they didn't need to promote it largely. I wish they did, because this movie sure has the qualities of being a hit.

Rocket Singh is Shimit Amins 2nd movie after Chak De India, which was critically acclaimed and which I personally liked very much. Rocket Singh is no different, I LOVED IT. The film is very intelligent, and deals with a very good story about a salesman. This reminds me of Wake Up Sid somehow, it has the same kind of effect. When the end credits roll you just smile and think, how the hell did I underestimate this movie??

Performances were terrific, of course Ranbir stood out once again. His role as a sardar must have been a challenge, and boy he did a marvellous job! Perfect! The roles of Giri, Koena, Nitin, Sunil Puri were also done very very well! Cinematography is good, the environment which was created added a lot to the feel of the movie.

Shimit Amin did an outstanding job with Rocket Singh - Salesman of the year. This is one director to look out for, he is very visionary! Rocket Singh sure rocked for me, watch it yourself and let it rock YOU!

Thumbs up!

Aladin (2009)
5/10
Chance gone down the drain
26 December 2009
Riteish Deshmukh is one actor I really like. I watch all his movies because he is the package with talent. He can give excellent performances if the directors can pull it out of him.

Aladin had a nice concept; the concept of using the real Aladdin story and giving it an Indian touch. Aladin Chatterjee, Genius, Jasmin. This could have been a great movie, the special effects in the movie are good.

Where does the movie lack? The direction, the way the story is told is kind of boring and doesn't keep you interested at all. Jacqueline Fernandes should get some acting classes, looking beautiful is not enough, because it can make you look stupid on screen when you are supposed to ACT instead of just be there and giving a smile.

Riteish Deshmukh is very good though, as Aladin, he is very lovable in the film and delivers a nice performance. Amitabh Bachchan is of course excellent, he is very energetic as Genius and lightens up the screen whenever he is there. Saahil Khan is back after a long time, and delivers very funny sequences, he has improved a lot and I wouldn't mind seeing him in future movies.

The music is good, though not the very best from Vishal-Shekhar, You May Be is the best of the lot, which will still be playing in years to come.

On the whole, Aladin is a chance wasted. If a visionary director like Rajkumar Hirani or Farhan Akthar would have directed this movie, the outcome would have been much better!

Decent: not fit for 2009
26 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I expected a lot from this film, the trailers looked nice, songs are a hype and it was a super-hit. After watching this film I feel a little disappointed.

These kind of comedies would have worked in the late 90's. Nowadays it is the era of comedies like Munnabhai/3 idiots/Jaane Tu.. movies that make a little sense. Of course Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani makes sense, but the storyline is outdated; boy loves girl, girl loves someone else initially, boy still gets the girl in the end.

Though there are some things in the movie that still made me rate the movie 6 out of 10.

1. Ranbir Kapoor is an absolute entertainer, Wake Up Sid already impressed me to the core, but this performance of Ranbir tells me he is definitely going to be the superstar of tomorrow, maybe he already is! 2. Special appearance by Salman Khan. The 3 minute appearance by Salman is really funny, and refreshing! 3. The song picturisations of Tera Hone Laga Hoon, Tu Jaane na. 4. The songs by Pritam. 5. Katrina Kaif looking absolutely gorgeous. 6. The last scene where 'someone' helps Ranbir.

Upen Patel is a big no-no in such kind of movies, he can't act man! He should stick to modelling, and if he really wants to act, he should learn how to give proper facial expressions and body language.

Rajkumar Santoshi disappoints this time, his Andaz Apna Apna is one of my all time favourites and still one of the finest comedies ever. Hope he doesn't disappoint next time!

All in all, if you have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon, watch this with some lays cheese onion in a bucket.

3 Idiots (2009)

3 Idiots, Hattrick from Rajkumar Hirani!
26 December 2009
I saw this movie on the first day of it's release. My expectations were terribly high from this movie since the Rajkumar Hirani's last two outings were absolute rock solid products in Indian cinema. Somehow Rajkuamr Hirani managed to make 3 Idiots so damn good that he surpassed my expectations! First of all, the casting.. though we have seen Aamir, Sharman and Madhavan in Rang De Basanti together, they still look very fresh together, maybe it is because of the college factor and mainly because Aamir seriously looks like a student in this movie. Boman Irani just had to be part of this movie because he was also there in Raju's last two. Kareena is also there.

The performances, Aamir has performed brilliantly. He is the total package in this movie! We all know how dedicated Aamir is towards his movies and roles. Aamir analysed the body language of the youth nowadays, the way they talk, and all the connecting details and he implemented them in his acting, which is very visible. He also manages to look 21 when he is actually 43 while shooting this movie! Aamir delivers a power performance, each time Aamir enters the screen you feel immense energy and know your either going to laugh really hard or enjoy the sequence that is going to come! R. Madhavan is very very impactful as Farhan and delivers a great performance, he is known for his impact in movies, even when he has a small role. Well in this one he has a big role, which is only better! Sharman Joshi is absolutely convincing as Raju, the guy that has so much pressure on him. His expressions and everything are marvelous and I thoroughly enjoyed him in this one.

Boman Irani is fantastic yet again, he surpasses all his previous performances and sets a new milestone in his own career. He is just great! Kareena is there for a few minutes, and is effective, though she should have been there more! The concept of the movie is absolutely amazing, we all know Rajkumar Hirani makes movies with a great entertainment value, but at the same time an intelligent social message. He is able to do that again this time, and how! Rajkumar also sends a new hype into the population of India, with Munnabhai MBBS it was the "Jaadu ki jhappi", with Lage Raho Munnabhai it was "Gandhigiri", and with 3 Idiots it is "Aaaaal izzz well!!". I am already using this line on a daily basis, lol! The music of the movie is great, Shantanu Moitra's songs always grow on people slowly, after coming from the movie, all the tracks have been stuck on my head, plus point for sure! The cinematography is top notch again, they have shot at a real college, with real students around. Which creates a very convincing atmosphere in every sequence! The editing of the movie is very very good.

All in all, 3 Idiots has impressed me so much, that I am willing to say this is the best Bollywood movie I have seen YET! A true milestone in the history of Indian Cinema.

GO WATCH IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN! P.S. There are some ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS sequences in the movie that are going to make you cry because of laughter for sure! 100/10

Avatar (2009)
10/10
The best movie ever made??
18 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Avatar is a beautiful and amazing movie on humans that set their feet on the planet of other creatures, the na'vi. The story is really gripping and the way the story has been told is award deserving. James Cameron is back with a bang after nearly a decade, and what a jump he has made of genres. From a romantic drama called Titanic, to a pathbreaking cinematic 3D experience called Avatar.

While watching this movie, I was so involved with whatever I saw, just like Jake Sully, I started connecting with the world of the Na'vi, and felt anger when the humans starting demolishing it. This is the magic and affect of the storytelling of James Cameron. He uses the complete first hour to make the audience connect and create love for that earth-like world of the Na'vi, the creatures on the planet and the beautiful nature.

The way James Cameron has written, handled and directed the story deserves accolades and awards, I have never felt this amazed by a movie before. Performances of the movie are of A+ class quality, even though the movie does not have big names yet, the characterisation of each and every actor is completely in sync with the characters of the movie.

Sam Worthington has done a commendable job as Jake Sully, he is very convincing, and has honest expressions. Jake in his Avatar form is absolutely lovable, and has been executed perfectly. Zoe Saldana as Neytiri is beautiful, she truly looks like the princess of the race, and has done a remarkable job. The supporting cast is absolutely wonderful and very impactful.

The dosing of humour is perfect, not too much, and not too less of it. The 3D special effects are a milestone in the history of 3D cinematic experiences. Never has any special effect involved me so much. The natural environment looks astonishing and absolutely beautiful, the way production has been designed is very peaceful. The creators of the exterior of this movie have done a commendable job.

All in all, I can't describe my feelings for this movie in a review. You have to see this movie with your own eyes, you have to experience it in order to understand what Avatar has to offer.

Go watch it, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Avatar is quality product in all perspectives, a milestone in the history of cinema. Thumbs up!

Priyanka is mindblowing!
17 December 2009
Whats Your Rashee, is a very very well made film. The film is about marriage and the zodiac signs. The film has Priyanka Chopra enacting 12 different roles and looks, and what performances man! She is just fantabulous! I was neutral about Priyanka Chopra, but Fashion, Kaminey and Whats Your Rashee made me love her completely! The direction is not up to the mark if compared to previous ventures by Ashutosh Gowariker (Lagaan, Swades, Jodhaa Akhbar), maybe it is because of the genre change, Ashutosh is directing a romantic comedy for the first time.

Music is a revelation, Ashutosh was stuck to A.R.Rahman, whos compositions are beautiful. This time Sohail Sen took the music directors seat and did a fantastic job, all songs are extremely melodious and shot nicely. Sohail Sen has a very nice voice himself and therefore crooned a few songs of the film, even Ashutosh Gowariker did a track and that sounds nice too, double thumbs up to the music department.

Harman Baweja has acted nice too for the first time after a string of bad performances (Love story 2050, Victory), although he looks kind of stiff sometimes and his body language needs some improvement on screen, Darshan as Devu does a very nice job and is very impactful.

The music video Whats Your Rashee, which is the last song of the movie has been shot so beautifully, a really innovative video, and very enjoyable too.

I am rating this movie 9 out of 10, would have rated it 7 otherwise, but the Priyanka Chopra and her performances, and the extremely melodious music make the movie deserve more.

All in all, go for it if you are in the mood for a sweet movie, with an incredible Piggy Chopps and great music.

P.S. I do miss a sequence in which Yogesh meets all the girls and explains them why he didn't choose that particular girl.

Thumbs up for sure :)

District 9 (2009)
10/10
A Masterpiece!
16 December 2009
This is one movie that made me go WOW when the end credits started showing. Frankly speaking I wasn't expecting anything from District 9, because the names are all unknown to me; Neil Blomkamp, Sharlto Copley etc.

I was pleasantly surprised about the concept, I thought this would be another movie on the lines of the MIB series, or Independence Day. That was not the case, another plus point of this movie is that it has been shot in the form of a documentary, just like Cloverfield gave you the impression you are watching amateur handycam footage, District 9 gives you a Discovery Channel feeling, which is very different.

Special effects are absolutely amazing, they are not over the top and fit the concept. The interaction between humans and aliens look very convincing, just one thing remains confusing; how do the humans understand alien language?

Performances are wonderful, with Sharlto Copley standing out as Wikus. He is simply marvellous and delivers an award worthy performance, I am confident this dude will go very far. The supporting cast was very effective, cinematography is just great.

All in all, District 9 is a masterpiece in the field of Sci-Fi, it cannot be compared to other movies, besides the alien factor. District 9 is worth 10 on 10!

YOU MUST GO FOR IT!!

London Dreams (2009)

London Dreams: 80% awesome!
15 December 2009
I have been waiting for London Dreams since the days Rajkumar Santoshi was the director, the movie kept on delaying, and was eventually shelved. Later, Vipul Shah picked it up and the movie started rolling. Because of the name Vipul Shah (Aankhen, Namastey London, Waqt) and the wonderful cast of Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Asin was known, I was expecting a spectacular musical.

The movie did give me a satisfying feeling, though it missed out on a few things, unfortunately. The first half is very entertaining and keeps the viewers interested, the climax is also very gripping. Just the ending spoiled it all, it feels like Vipul Shah forced the movie to end, it could have been so much better.

Performance wise Salman Khan stood out once again, Salman carried the whole movie on his shoulders, he was very entertaining and very convincing. Asin looked beautiful and delivered a good performance, though her role was kind of small. Ajay Devgn was wonderful, the intensity of his character was visible in his very expressive eyes during the whole film.

Everyone thinks the music of this film is very weak, I disagree because I feel the movie is good, not great though. Barso, Mann ko ati bhave, Khwab jo, are foot tapping. The Wembley song performance by Ajay could have been a different composition.

The defect of the movie only lies within the last 7 minutes of the movie, which is such a pity, because I really liked the initial 2 and a half hours.

You should go for this movie if you want to see gripping performances, great cinematography and emotions. Don't watch the movie if you hate movies which have very bad endings!

Overall I would rate this movie 8 out of 10, because of superb Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Asin, the direction to a certain extent, and the great locales.

Paa (2009)

Paa: Excellent!
8 December 2009
Just got back from the theatre, I am so happy I have seen this movie on the big screen. Paa is an original product. The movie revolves around progeria and has a wonderful story around it.

Amitabh Bachchan excels as Auro, he delivers an astonishing performance as a kid. It's been long since I really really REALLY appreciated a performance by Big B, since his last few outings were crazily commercial.

Abhishek Bachchan is wonderful as Amol, he delivers a confident performance as the clean politician wishing the best for India, kudos! Vidya Balan looks beautiful, and delivers a perfect performance. We all know she is a fine actress, she was gone for a while after Kismat Konnection, which I thought was kind of bad, but she's back with a bang! Paresh Rawal is again absolutely wonderful as Amols father, his expressions always rock.

All in all, I am very pleased with this movie, after a great start with Cheeni Kum, R. Balki is on his way to settle his name amongst the quality directors of Bollywood.

The music is foot-tapping, the best of the lot is of course "Mudi mudi", of which the scenes in the film have been edited so beautifully.

Paa is beautiful, go watch it on the big screen while you still can! 10/10

Deep Impact + Great SFX = 2012
3 December 2009
2012 had so much potential, it had everything from a big budget, the catastrophe director Emmerich, a nice cast.. and above all, the actual hype about 2012.

Still, the movie has failed to impress me, why? I'll tell you why, this movie is a lot like a movie called Deep Impact, which released like a decade ago, everything I saw in 2012 resembled DI. If only they used spaceships in stead of the Arks, that would make it different. Roland Emmerich uses the same special effects, as he did in The day after tomorrow, repetitive SFX though still nicely executed.

Acting wise, John Cusack stood out along with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Amanda Peet. The Russian dude was quite funny. All in all, I am very disappointed with the outcome, commercially this movie might be doing well (because of the hype of course), but critically I believe this movie fails in the eyes of a lot of its customers.

I am rating this movie 5 out of 10 solely for the SFX and John. Avoid this movie if you are looking for a nice story, go for it if you want a nice popcorn flick with good SFX.

Madhur and Neil score!
2 December 2009
I know Madhur Bandharkar movies don't interest the masses, since his movies are realistic as hell. His last outing, Fashion, was on the contrary a bit different, but still Madhurs style. Because I really liked I checked out Jail, and im not disappointed at all! Jail has great performances by Neil Nitin Mukesh, Manoj Bajpai and the other supporting cast as the inmates. The music is in sync with the movie and the screenplay and cinematography has been done in an excellent way.

I feel Jail could have done better business instead of bombing at the box office if it only didn't release aside the comic raper Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.

Jail has Neils best performance so far, a nice story and great content! Go for it!

De Dana Dan (2009)
10/10
Damn funny! Go watch it!
1 December 2009
De Dana Dan is one of the finest comedies in recent times, we all know Priyadarshan is an expert on the field of comedy, this movie belongs to his top movies next to Hera Pheri, Hungama and Garam Masala.

The movie started off on a hilarious note, continued to the climax in a hilarious way, and ended in a perfect typical Priyadarshan way! I always liked Sunil Shetty and know he is very underrated, Akshay Kumar and Sunil were both outstanding, and delivered rib-tickling performances.

The supporting cast is excellent, Paresh Rawal, Asrani, Johnny Lever, Shakti Kapoor, Neha Dhupia, Sharat Saxena.. everyone! Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy didn't really have much scope, or funny scenes..

Plusses : Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, REALLY funny moments and a few nice songs.

Minus : The songs pop out of nowhere, but we are kind of used to that with Priyadarshan aren't we?

Go for it, you won't be disappointed!

Kurbaan (2009)

Kurbaan: nothing refreshing
23 November 2009
I watched Kurbaan on day 1 of its release, I had huge expectations since Saif Ali is doing prestigious films nowadays, plus, this film is about the sensitive case of Muslim terrorists. The movie had everything, a reputed producer, Rensil D'silva (RDB fame), Saif, Kareena... yet it couldn't manage to impress me.

Sure, they portrayed the known truth about "Extremist" muslims, but the movie didn't explain that this is just about a small group of idiots. I can imagine that watching this as a Muslim might be painful. They showed the extremist muslims, and the modernised Muslim (Vivek), but im missing the genuine Muslim here, the one that comes between the extremists and the modern ones.. on the neutral spot.

If you are handling a sensitive topic like this you should take care of clear portrayal which doesn't offend the viewers. I am not a Muslim, but still I didn't quite accept the portrayal of muslims in this.

Other than the complains above, I thought Saif Ali has set a remarkable performance, so did Vivek, who i thought was a loser in the field of acting. Kareena Kapoor was OK, she was annoying in a few scenes.

There were a few goof ups here and there, and the first 30 minutes were plain boring. This could have been a movie to remember, its a pity that this is just a one time watchable movie.

Go for it if you are curious, otherwise watch it on DVD after a few years, you are not missing anything special.

Just got back from the theatre. I was excited about Blue. There was a big hype around Blue, as it is one of the most expensive Bollywood movies ever made, it has a wonderful star cast,Oscar-winner A.R.Rahman's music, Kylie Minogue, great publicity.

I thought Blue would have a rocking story apart from all the bikes, explosions and underwater diving. Of course there is a story, but it just doesn't live up to anyones expectations.

Blue has some plusses though, it has been shot very lavishly, I am always afraid of weird looking bollywood action scenes, Blue doesn't have those. Blue has excellent action scenes, first-rate stunts, awesome camera-work (Especially under water!).

Go see Blue if you are okay with seeing only great visuals and stunts. The movie is not bad, the story is just bad, everything else is awesome.

I rate this movie 7 out of 10 because of the following things : - Akshay Kumars awesome flawless acting as a negative role. - Sanjay Dutts performance. - Zayed Khan for once, doesn't go unnoticed, well done. - Katrina Kaif's hitting cameo. - Aaj dil gustakh hai, Fiqrana and Blue theme. - Superb actions and visuals.

Wake Up Sid (2009)
10/10
Wow...! Excellent!
7 October 2009
Wake Up Sid is such a movie of which you can tell a lot by only seeing the promos. I was looking forward to Wake Up Sid and i'm really glad i watched it the first day, the first show!

Wake Up Sid tells a story to which probably all youngsters especially Indian youngsters can relate to. I found myself in the movie, in Ranbirs acting, in Ayaan Mukherji's direction. Wake Up Sid is about a phase in life which we all have to deal with/have dealt with.

Wake Up Sid has Ranbir Kapoor's finest acting till date, though only 3 movies old, I can say Ranbir is the next superstar of tomorrow. Konkona Sen Sharma shines once again, she is just marvelous. She acts beautifully, I am truly starting to see her as a favourite.

The songs of Wake Up Sid are excellent and in sync with the movie. Another big pluspoint is that there was no lipsyncing, something which I have a big problem with! Ayaan Mukjherj probably understands how a movie can be accepted internationally.

Thumbs up to director Ayaan Mukherji, for telling the story marvelously. Thumbs up to Ranbir Kapoor, for giving such an awesome performance. Thumbs up to Konkona Sen Sharma for being the great actress she just is.

Wake Up Sid is AWESOME!

Wanted (I) (2009)
10/10
Salman was NEVER gone
7 October 2009
Wanted.... a movie many of us have been waiting for. It has already been declared the biggest blockbuster of 2009. I just got back from this movie and I just have to say one thing : THIS, is what Salman Khan is about!

One movie in which you get it all! ; Marvelous acting, awesome comic timing, fantastic dance moves, good performed action!

All done by the one and only Salman Khan!

Let me start off telling about the story, though it's not the best ever story around, the story is good. Different than the usual boy-meets-girl stories. The story is about gangs and the underworld dons v/s each other v/s the police. Prabhudeva proves he not only has dance talent, but also amazing story telling abilities. The story was told very differently, other than the usual underworld movies bollywood has produced (Sanjay Dutt movies.

The movie has a lot of comic moments, they were not over the top.. just perfect enough to make you laugh!

Though I have a slight complaint against the songs that just popped op at places, the melodious music and great choreography made me forget the problem.

Ayesha Takia hasn't forgotten how to act for sure, she not only looks great, but acts very well too! I sure hope this lady continues acting even though there are rumours about her quitting acting.

Prakash Raj as Ghani Bhai has done the role very convincingly. The scene where he's not supposed to sleep is simply hilarious!

Mahesh Manjrekar is effective as the very corrupt bastard cop. He ones again proves how versatile he is.

And now... SALMAN KHAN... the man that made this movie what it is. Wanted is a pure Salman movie, the movie shines because of him. He's done the role exceptionally well. Though Salman hasn't seen many commercial successes the past few years.. I personally believe things will go very smooth for him post Wanted!

I am very satisfied with Wanted and look forward to Salmans future releases! THUMBS UP WANTED!

P.S. Wanted.. Salmans comeback vehicle? Hell no, are you telling me he was gone?

Lame...
9 June 2009
This movie is very bad written/ poor directed / poor acted. It managed to get 3 out of me just because of Manoj Bajpai - Diya Mirza's story. That was acted well and made sense.

Everything else sucked hard, music, amateuristic performances, and the whole idea of telling 10 different stories. There should be continuity in a movie, rather than just paste 10 stories to each other, that makes it utterly boring.

I was expecting more. A total waste, don't watch it if u have a busy life and want to catch a nice flick. Thumbs down. + Manoj Bajpai/Diya Mirza/Nana Patekar - Everything else

Not very realistic, though very well shot
9 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie when it debuted at the box office but didn't bother writing a review till now. The movie was entertaining on all fronts, just all this critical acclaim isn't rightfully earned. A lot of things shown in the movie are just very unrealistic, I know this because I am Indian myself.

First things first, performances were very refreshing. Of course I knew most of the actors as I've seen them on screen while growing up. (Anil Kapoor/Saurabh Sukhla/Mahesh Manjrekar/Irffan Khan, all of them were good. Dev Patel as Jamal did a fine job, he is not a thorough looker, but that is what the role demanded. Freida Pinto as Latika was good too, though she needs to polish her acting skills more. Madhur Mittal as Salim was outstanding, I haven't really seen him before but he sure has command over acting. All the kids were absolutely amazing, they acted so natural without having acting classes or whatsoever. Superb! Out of all the younger actors, in my opinion Tanay Chheda stood out as the strongest.

Music was of course outstanding, because the music has been done by maestro A.R.Rahman, I have always been a fan of him, though this is not his best work, I'm glad he got an Oscar for his composition, and made his name a trademark in the market of international music. Jai Ho and Ringa Ringa are absolutely foot-tappable numbers.

Now the bad points... I understand the kids later grew up at places where tourism is a big thing, so they learned English. But it is certainly not realistic that the police cops were also talking in English to Jamal when he was being questioned, not just them... almost everybody was talking English. It would have been much better if they would have just talked in Hindi with included subtitles for viewers. Instead of letting the protagonists talk in English because it looks better than subtitles, that made it totally fake.

Second thing... Kaun Banega Crorepati? (Or Who wants to be a millionaire?) was never a Live thing on TV, sure, of course I understand that they can make it live because someone has reached the last 3 questions, but they should have somehow narrated that in the story, just demands a little creativity.

Thirdly, Salims character should have been written better. It still remains unclear/confusing why he changed in the last moment. It would have been better if Danny would have let Salim converse with Jamal first (On the phone even..) that he realised his mistakes and is about to make up for everything.

These three things caused me to cut three points off the total mark for Slumdog Millionaire. The hype isn't really needed, its a fine product, but not flawless.

:) Overall : Watch Slumdog Millionaire if you love good cinema! Thumbs up!

Billu (2009)
2/10
Poor direction this time from Priyadarshan
5 June 2009
Priyadarshan who is known for movies like Hera Pheri (Excellent) , Garam Masal (Entertaining) , Kyon Ki (touching). Works with SRK for the first time. Promos looked promising etc, but i guess the movie lacked a soul.

Billu was just boring from starting to ending, SRK was busy promoting himself as a big star in the movie, although that is what the role demanded.. I was just getting tired of the filmposters and scenes from all his other movies, they should have come up with something innovative here. SRK had a superstar attitude throughout the whole movie except the last 10 minutes. Irfan Khan shines again, the amazing actor manages to perform really well in this bad written flick too, that is what an actors job is after all, very good Irfan! Lara doesn't have much scope, 10 minutes all together? or 20 maybe! SRK proves that he is a very commercial producer, and uses his celebrity friends for item songs so that the promos look cool. Kareena Kapoor sure looked good in Marjaani, Deepika looked OK, and Priyanka did a good job. Though the songs were horribly misplaced in the movie.

Irfans kids in the movie do a great job, they were natural. Songs by pritam are of course a very big hit. They are all great, Marjaani, Love Mera Hit Hit, Khudaiya Khair/You get me rocking and reeling. Superb.

+ Irfans performance + Songs - SRK Self promotion - Too damn commercial - B-oooooooring

Seven Pounds (2008)
10/10
Left me speechless...incredible movie
28 May 2009
Seven pounds is a fantastic movie. It touches your heart gravely and makes you think of how life can just change in a jiffy.

I saw pursuit of happiness ft. Will Smith of course, and was very impressed by the movie and the Italian director Gabriele Muccino. I was looking forward to Seven Pounds but wasn't expecting another gem from him. While watching the movie I kind of had the feeling that I was right about the movie, it doesn't have to offer you much the first 60 minutes, it rather leaves you confused and curious to find out what the main protagonist is up to. Then the last 20 minutes of the movie arrive and blows you away completely. Everything becomes clear, Ben's purpose, Ben's problem, explanation for his weird behaviour, even the movie title makes sense.

I have always believed Will Smith is one incredible actor, people just don't know how to use his fantastic talent, except for this Italian sir who has done it twice. I hope Gabrieles third Hollywood movie is also with Will. They make a wonderful combo. The performances of everyone in this movie leaves you speechless.

If you have a heart and enough patience to finish watching a slow movie. Then you will love Seven Pounds. Will Smith delivers an Oscar worthy performance, as well as Rosario Dawson. This movie has definitely entered my top 10 ever!

100 thumbs up!

Wow...! Brilliant!
1 May 2009
It makes me feel so happy to see a product like Luck By Chance coming out of India. A land full of commercial cinema! I enjoyed Luck By chance to the fullest. Zoya Akthar made a brilliant debut as a director, I could not find any flaws.

Farhan Akthar is one damn good actor, he expresses so good with his face. It might be because he is a brilliant director himself and knows how to deliver performances.

The cast of the whole movie was very convincing, Rishi Kapoor as Rolly was hilarious but very impactful, Konkona delivers a fine performance yet again, she is one of the best actresses in the country. All the cameos made sense and wasn't commercial just like Om Shanti Om for instance.

The music was used very well, no unnecessary playbacking portions, no misplacement of the songs. Sapno se bhare naina was very beautiful, Pyaar ki dastaan is shot very well aswel.

Zoya Akhtar is one director to look out for, she left me speechless. SRK's cameo is very effective, his last dialogue is very effective.

Awesome with a capitcal "A"!

Well done Zoya, Farhan, Konkona!

Wolverine rocks!
30 April 2009
Wolverine is exactly what it needed to be. The story has been written to perfection in my opinion.

As far as i can remember the comics never really revealed much about the origins of Wolverine, therefore I think it is not wise to compare this movie completely to the whole comic series. See this as an individual product and you wont find any flaws.

The story doesn't contradict itself unlike other X-men movies, which is a big plus point. Hugh Jackman has delivered a knock-out performance, so has the rest of the cast, especially Liev Schreiber.

Hats off to the action director of this movie for making beautiful action sequences. Special effects are something to look out for in this movie.

Overall I enjoyed this flick to the max.

If you are a person that is tempted to compare this movie the existing comics then i suggest you watch this on DVD after a few years, otherwise.. if you are ready to watch this as an individual product then go for it... you wont be disappointed.

Wolverine = 10 on 10!
