Night Sky (2022)
Great Acting and character development
Sissy Spacek is a pleasure to watch. A nice sci-fi with solid storylines and character development. The portal thing is certainly nothing new so it needs other strong attributes, which it has. It is slow paced at first, but picks up nicely as the season progresses. Here's hoping for a season 2.
Yellowstone (2018)
Another dumba** show
More people die in this show per episode than exist in the entire state the show is supposedly set it. The amount of coincidences per minute are enough to make an atheist rethink their paradigm. The dialogue feels like a whip with a piece of shrapnel at the end of it...randomly whipping through the air landing whever the writers decided to take a break for the day. The acting is as tired as a pack mule at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Why two stars? It beats a sharp stick in the eye, there's that.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Star Trek Woke
There's woke and then there's -- Imma choke you out unless you swallow everything I put on your plate-- woke. I'm throwing up. Huge Star Trek fan, but this (as well as Picard) try to hard to shove 2020's agenda's down our throats rather than futuristic fantastical ideals.
Hitman: Agent 47 (2015)
My wife and I both enjoyed this movie
My wife and I both thought the rating was a little low. This movie was fun..it had some great creative action sequences and the acting was good. At first, like others, I was questioning the lead because he didn't look like a lead. In the end, he was great and carried the film well. Maybe Hollywood should take more chances and use lesser known actors that can actually act, like this guy can. The lead actress is beautiful and subtle. The storyline was adequate for the genre. Overall, pleasantly surprised.
Intensive Care (2018)
A complete waste of eyeball juice
So there were a few funny moments (score a star) and some of the acting was self-deprecating enough. But the plot was soooo bad and there were no likable characters. A complete waste of eyeball juice.
The Protégé (2021)
I enjoyed it.
There were a couple of original action sequences. The story held my interest and the leads held their own. I enjoyed it, but nothing to write home about.
Pig (2021)
So much going on in such a short time.
Where do I begin? There were great performances (by everyone): Cage was powerful, but I felt Wolff stole the movie. Arkin, whom I normally don't care for, was perfect. It's not so much a movie about a pig and that was an interesting choice (or as I found out later probably because of budget issues--they could not afford a trained pig). It would have been nice to see the relationship between the pig and Cage's character developed more, they just gave a very brief taste (pardon the pun). Most movies of this nature would have manipulated the hell of that, animals can elicit easy sympathy. This movie didn't. They instead chose to actually rely on the relationships of the people in the film, and surprisingly, for a movie named after an animal, it worked.
For me, this movie was more about a young man seeing his life through the circumstances of a lonely old man: his father, mother, past choices and future possibilities. All of which was made possible by him reluctantly taking the old man on a journey. But there was so much more, depending on where your sensibilities lie. There was an awesome subtle (perhaps not so subtle) criticism of societal obsessions and priorities, in this case--food. It was hilarious. But it also showed the beautiful part of food and how it is the sustenance of life in differing ways.
Suffice it to say, I think there is something in this film for everyone. Even the supporting characters have a story to tell. This review is too long already, so I'll stop here--Bon Appétit!
Bliss (2021)
Easier to watch and more relatable than most films with similar themes
Most films with this theme are almost unbearable to watch. Requiem for a Dream is a prime example. I thought this film was a slow burn and one that didn't take it too deep but yet allowed us to glimpse into the possibilities of addiction. Anyway, it was a creative and interesting take on a very common subject matter.
Honest Thief (2020)
Well worth a watch
This movie only gets six stars? It's no wonder there is so much lousy drivel out there sucking down folk's time and money. When they make a descent film like this one, with a little heart and a little action, you rate it badly because it didn't have "enough" action. The idea was played well (fantasy maybe, but hmmm, it's a movie, go figure). Acting was good. Give it at least an 8, to make up for all the low votes ...even if you think it's only a seven. Enjoy!!!
Phenomena (1985)
All she had to do was flush...
I get it. It's a stylized low budget Italian horror flick. If the writing had not been so bad, I could have overlooked the parts that didn't work so well and chuckle. But when a writer can't get even the simplest things right, it just doesn't work for me. The best example I can give is when she took the pill instead of simply flushing it...come on!
Pandorum (2009)
Well done.
I couldn't stop watching. It almost turned into a horror film, but landed back in the realm of SciFi. Well acted, nicely shot, suspenseful, and interesting plot. If you're a SciFi fan, definitely watch.
The Sonata (2018)
For the genre, it hits all the right notes.
Not the best acting, but everything else was pretty much on target. Along the lines of any movie with satanic themes, it is right up there, had it had a larger budget and better actors, it would have surpassed the best of the best. The ending was unnecessary and there are other things to criticize, but all in all, worth a watch.
Atlantis (2013)
Gets better, should not have been cancelled
The first few episodes threw me off. After watching through season one, not only is it ambitious, it is well written and we'll acted. Addy is the perfect Hercules for so many reasons--someone was genius with that casting. The actress who plays the evil queen is an amazing talent. A fun show with heart, drama, and wit.
Alex Cross (2012)
The book was so bad the movie didn't stand a chance
When I read the book I thought it was an outline...for a book. Then it occurred to me, this guy (James Patterson) wants to be in the movies. After reading the acknowledgements in the back of the book, that was confirmed--Mr. Bowen should have let dead dogs lie. Please respect art and do better work. No foundation and the house falls.
Save Yourselves! (2020)
What the hell, this was so different.
Very quirky and entertaining. The two lead actors were great, the direction was great, the filming was great. Yeah, nothing typical about this film and certainly not a Hollywood mainstream focus group ending. Very fun to watch. The actors had great chemistry. Overall, super creative. Thank you!!!!
Forever (2018)
Why would Amazon cancel this?
What moron executive was in charge of cancellation? This might have blossomed into a cult classic--making them lots of money. Too short sighted to think long term.
Astraea (2015)
Well done
I don't know if it was well acted, well directed, or both. But this little film held my interest the entire time. Slow moving with thoughtful dialogue and realistic relationships.
Like a Boss (2020)
Rose Byrne should sue her agent and manager and then pay us all back from the proceeds.
I'm not writing this just because the film was really bad, I'm writing it because it's true: Possibly the WORST film I've ever seen. Embarrassingly bad. You just feel either bad or mad at everyone involved.
Lara (2019)
No surprises here. Very well done for what it is.
There are movies that stick with you long after you see them. This is one of those. That's not always a good thing, mind you. especially when it's a dark film. This is a dark film. However, it managed to be both entertaining and thoughtfully thought provoking...as good art should be. The other reviews discuss the subject matter, so I won't repeat. I would gently urge you to watch this movie and you will revel in the talented acting and slow purposeful direction. The choices we make in life are on full display here. Sometimes the bit players, as well as the leads, in our lives affect us profoundly and shape our direction. Can we learn and adjust our course or continue on in despair...? A very solid work.
Miss Meadows (2014)
Wrong leading lady.
Could have been a good film, if it had a different lead. Holmes is just bad, especially when she's on screen with better skilled actors. The movie is quirky and stylized, which is good, but it doesn't work and I think Holmes is the reason why.
Shrill (2019)
Sinks to all that it pretends to abhor
Why is it that politically correct comedy makes fun of everything that's not on the list yet? So you can't make fun of fat people anymore, but you can make fun of nerds, still. You can't make a joke about a black lesbian woman, but you can sure make fun of the white suburban mother. The lead actress has ability and the writing is actually pretty good, but it tries way to hard to be politically correct in a day where nothing is politically correct. Like other reviewers, I wanted to like this show, but it sinks lower than that in which it decries. Good comedies used to be able to traverse all the fine lines...this show never knew where they were.
Paradise Hills (2019)
Could have been a decent film.
It could have been a decent futuristic thriller if only they hadn't included the very strange supernatural component towards the end. Everything was playing along nicely within the set of "rules" created by the writer(s),until the weird sci-fi part where Milla Jovovich's character sucks blood while the rose bushes help her out by wrapping around her victims to hold them down and strangle them. Weird.
The Fare (2018)
Great lead actor, weak lead actress
To enjoy this film, you really need to like the characters and the actors that play them. And while Gino Anthony Pesi is really great, his co-star is really weak. He's so good that it makes her, Brinna Kelly, look even worse. I was puzzled at how she got the part. After looking it up here on IMDB, I saw that she was the writer. If only she had let a better, more accomplished actress perform the role, the movie would have perhaps succeeded. I was really impressed with Pesi, and it's almost worth watching just for him.
The Widow (2019)
I enjoyed it, but I agree with a lot of the other reviews.
Starts off really well. Nicely filmed, good acting, but the last two episodes and the climax were a little off the mark. But overall, it's worth a view.
I See You (2019)
Surprisingly good.
I knew nothing about this film before watching it. After watching the movie and then reading some of the reviews, I read that the listed genre was horror, which it is not. It is definitely a thriller and one well worth watching. However, I do wish actors would stop with the plastic surgery and age gracefully...it's very distracting to see.
