The Lion King (1994)

still great after all those years
5 July 2009
I think this movie was the first film I ever saw at the cinema. That was 15 years ago, and I was five years old. I was so excited about the whole film and I loved it. Today, I watched the film again. It still held the same magic, made me laugh and sad at the same time and I still love the soundtrack. Many films lose with time whatever it is that make them special to us, but this movie definitely isn't one of them. I heard people say that the story is to cheesy, but this is a Disney production, so what do you expect? Either you love those films, or you hate them. Other's say the storyline is badly developed. I just don't know what they're talking about. Sure: one knows how this film will end, but that doesn't make the story bad, considering the genre. The characters are well drawn, and the film holds a maturity that might be considered misplaced in a movie made for kids. But it isn't: there is a simple lesson you understand as a child, and a conflict in Simbas soul you will appreciate as an adult. I just can say that I still love this movie as much as I always did. Some of the reasons for this may be different now, but some of them are still the same, and I am very grateful that I can still enjoy some things I loved as a child just as much as an adult. If you haven't seen this film yet, you should give it a try. It wont disappoint you. If you've got children, they will have a great time watching this movie.

the film that rocked
16 April 2009
I have been wanting to see this movie since I saw the trailer for the very first time. Today I finally got the opportunity. The plot sounded interesting and I was hoping to see a comedy that wasn't as predictable and forced romantic as a lot of comedies are. I wasn't disappointed. Sure, this isn't the most profound story ever told, but I wanted to have fun, and this movie definitely gave it to me. Another bonus is the great soundtrack, which carries the whole movie. After leaving the cinema you will want to listen to the songs featured in this film, just so you can enjoy the feeling of it a little longer. This film is funny from the beginning to the end, and there were moments when I couldn't stop laughing. If you want to see a feel-good movie with a plot that was, at least as far as I know, not used before, than this is the right film for you.

very funny
14 April 2009
This film is very funny. I don't have a problem with a parody of the Robin Hood legend, and I can't imagine a better way to do it then to make fun of the "Prince of thieves", for it was released only two years before "men in tights" and therefore still stuck in everyone's memory. Some of the greatest scenes are when Robin tries to deliver a touching speech but no one really listens. I often feel that heroes in movies act very lofty, and it's nice that this has no effect for once. There are some pretty flat jokes in this film, too. But I admire the way this film manages to parody the "prince of thieves" so to the point and still be full of new ideas. If you are looking for a movie to watch when you are in a bad mood and don't want to think to much, this is your film! I've seen it about five times and I still laugh almost without a break.

best movie i've seen in a while
7 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
"Slumdog millionaire" tells the story of a young man who tries to be successful at "who's going to be a millionaire", not for the money, but for his only love. Sounds tacky. Well, it is, but in a good way. It is nice to see that someone who didn't have a very easy life so far will win in the end. That's not the newest idea ever brought to screen, but this film has an interesting narrative perspective using flashbacks, and you will find yourself sucked into Jamal's story faster then you can blink. I really liked this film. The plot may sound lame at first, but it holds a lot of surprises. The only thing that kept me from giving this movie 10 stars was the end, or more precisely that Jamal managed to guess the last answer correctly. He had gotten Latika back, so it wasn't really necessary that he got the money as well. So much luck is just a little to fantastic. But it isn't so unrealistic that it spoils the whole movie, and I was happy for Jamal, nevertheless. It might just have given the film a last twist if he hadn't won, and it still would've been a happy ending. Except for this, the movie was perfect: great atmosphere, music and story. A must see!!!

Criminal Minds (2005– )
9/10
my favorite crime drama
6 April 2009
What makes criminal minds special is that every main character has an own, well developed personality. Nothing is more boring then to watch some guys who solve crimes but obviously don't have anything else they exist for, so when the case is solved they just disappear until the next one comes up. Of course, the main part of every episode of criminal minds is dedicated to the crime or rather the criminal the BAU has to work on this time, but there is often time for interaction between the team members or insight in someones mind. This series doesn't forget to show some of the emotional effects this kind of work no doubt has. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any episode of season 4 yet (Germany is always 1 year behind) and I didn't like a few things about season 3, but that doesn't change that this is the only crime drama of which I don't miss a single episode.

M*A*S*H (1972–1983)
10/10
greatest show ever made
6 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
When I saw this show for the first time, I was about 7 or 8, I think. My parents used to watch it during dinner. Usually, television stays off at meals. But this show was the big exception. Of course, I didn't get the jokes or the plot at that time. But some years later my sisters and me found old video tapes. We hoped we could erase them, but then we started to watch because we got curious. It was like: somehow I've seen this before. and before I knew it, I was totally into this show. when it was finally released on DVD in Germany, I bought every season. Now I could watch every single episode. There were so many I didn't know yet, and almost everyone was great. M*a*s*h has very well developed characters, a dry sense of humor and, most important, it has something to say. There are some things you wouldn't expect, such as the dead of Henry. That makes up for some plot lines that were rather predictable. Given the number of episodes, it's amazing how high the quality of M*a*s*h remained till the end.I think I like the later episodes just a little bit better, because they are more realistic. But Frank Burns, who was, in my opinion, the most overdrawn character, was always good for a laugh. M*a*s*h had a little bit of everything, and that's what makes it so special. I don't know any other show that's so funny and sad, so serious and ridiculous, at the same time. Just give it a try!
