Tarkin Teaser
4 September 2020
This episode continues the rescue mission with Anakin, Ahsoka and Obi Wan attempting to rescue Jedi Master Piell and Captain Tarkin.

Tarkin shows some of his darker and more ruthless sides here which tease towards his future as Imperial Governor Tarkin in A New Hope.

The action and dialogue are very good and this is a strong episode.

Fortress Raid
3 September 2020
After a run of absolutely tremendous episodes this feels less incredible in a way as it is yet another Jedi rescue mission. However, this is one of the best rescue missions you could have and is superb entertainment!

The Citadel is a convincingly difficult fortress to break someone out of with its defences, special droids and great, menacing commander making it an effectively perilous mission.

The dark torture scenes of Jedi Master Piell add grim quality and the revelation of who Piell's Captain is during this story adds huge pleasure and thrill for original trilogy fans.

The action is great, the dialogue is great and despite not being the level of storytelling the awesome previous episodes were, this is exactly the kind of quality adventure I want from the series.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Ghosts of Mortis (2011)

Ghost of Future Darkness
3 September 2020
Following on from the previous superb Mortis episodes and continuing an amazing run of terrific episodes including those featuring Assajj Ventress revenge mission against Dooku, this is maybe the best of the lot. Anakin is influenced by The Son and faces his dark future. The exhilerating and dark story is perfect. We get Qui-Gon's ghost, premonitions of Darth Vader and a powerful battle for Anakin's soul.

Anakin is the centre of this epic story but Ahsoka and Obi Wan are equally given amazing roles whilst the ghost of Qui-Gon is magical and the premonitions are electrifying to see.

The Son is a fantastic villain and The Father is also a deep and interesting character.

This episode is just wonderful.

Shadow of the Dark Side
3 September 2020
This continues the fantastic run of episodes as we see Anakin, Obi Wan and Ahsoka in perl on Mortis as The Son, an embodiment of the dark side attempts to turn apprentice against master and find his exit from Mortis. The Daughter shows Anakin a weapon that is stored away where neither she nor her brother, The Son, can get it. The weapon can stop The Son but once removed from its safe storage it must not be allowed to fall into The Son's hands.

The brilliant emotional and exciting face off between an infected Ahsoka and Anakin is just one great aspect of this excellent episode. Dark, thoughtful and very well written. This second half of Season 3 of Clone Wars is just amazing!

Forcefully Fascinating
1 September 2020
Wow, this was kind of shocking in how it added previously unheard of ancient lore into the story of the force, the Jedi and the Sith. Bold and striking storytelling which is hugely admirable.

A distress signal is picked up in an ancient code which when followed leads Obi Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka to an unknown world called Mortis. There they meet 3 beings who reveal themselves as ancient force wielders - the Father, the Son and the Daughter. The Father predates all Jedi and Sith and has power over both light and dark sides of the force. He has taken a role keeping balance in the force. The Son is the embodiment of the dark side and the Daughter is the light.

The Father wants to explore if Anakin is indeed the chosen one who can bring balance and replace him as he is dying. Anakin is forced to take a test.

The story is creating a rich fantasy origin story giving background to the force. It also adds to the story of Anakin (and in turn, Rey) who wields both dark and light which is dangerous but allows greater power and potential to create balance.

It is quite a lot to add and is very surprising. Everything is done well and this is a real plus to the canon.

Awesome Warriors
1 September 2020
This is the best episode up to this point in Clone Wars.

The episode is terrifically exciting in terms of action with epic lightsaber and force wielding battles. This is pure Star Wars magic and to be honest I am confused how creators of all Star Wars films and series do not realise that if they just put more epic lightsaber/force battles between great, cool characters they automatically lift the appeal. Darth Maul's battle in Phantom Menace doubles that films quality for example.

However, it is not action which is shallow entertainment like a dumb popcorn movie, it has depth and nuanced storytelling behind it with great characters facing off with powerful motivation given by the brilliantly written script.

There is spot on dialogue, dark deeper themes and epic visual action created with impressive animation.

A fabulous episode.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Monster (2011)

Dark Creation
1 September 2020
This is an episode with depth and rich storytelling. Like Frankenstein, we have a monster being created with no care for the emotional baggage this causes and the dark, unbalanced being that results.

Ventress has help from Mother Talzin to create a new apprentice to send to Dooku with a plan of using this apprentice to help destroy her former master.

The way they go about selecting, training and modifying the new apprentice is dark, brutal and cruelly immoral. These themes are powerful and it is all done really well.

The new character Savage Oppress, voiced by the wonderful Clancy Brown of Highlander (Kurgan) fame, is brilliant. The emotional depth added to him is great and the action is very entertaining.

A very powerful episode.

This is where Clone Wars REALLY kicks off!
1 September 2020
Nightsisters is a superb episode and leads on to loads more superb episodes. It really is the point when things kick off and the show becomes a huge plus to the overall Star Wars story.

The storyline here is dark and grippingly exciting as Darth Sidious orders Dooku (Darth Tyrannus) to eliminate his apprentice Assajj Ventress. The reason is given that she is becoming more powerful and is perceived as a threat. Reading between the lines logically, Sidious simply does not trust her. She has no clear loyalty to him and he fears Dooku and her together might try to challenge him.

Ventress does not take kindly to her mentor's betrayal.

It is a great story and the action is tremendous with an excellent space battle and some epic lightsaber duels.

This adds to the lore of Star Wars and is fantastic entertainment.

Political Chess
21 August 2020
This is another episode that runs out of the logical order. It should really be viewed after Season 3 Episode 11.

The episode involves continued political shenanigans and a poisoning of one of Padme's closest allies. The idea is that behind the scenes a chess game of politics is pushing any chance of peace away and ensuring the conflict escalates.

It all makes sense when viewed in order and is a sensible, interesting plot background to the war.

Not the most scintillating episode but a very solid one that has a murder mystery element.

Star Anti-Wars
21 August 2020
This episode has some powerful themes of pro-peace, anti-war ideology as well as about corruption and subversion of democracy by politically motivated threats and violence.

It is rather a lot of message to translate in a 25 minute animated episode but it does a good job with some nice depictions of standing up for democracy and for people in need despite personal risk.

I liked the episode a lot even though it was more stodgy politics than entertaining action.

This is an interesting delve into the politics of the Republic vs Separatists situation.

It manages to not get too stodgy and boring and is quite thoughtful.

Not an action packed episode at all but a very solid building block to the overall story.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Hunt for Ziro (2010)

I am your Godfather.
21 August 2020
This episode is a pastiche of gangster movies. The Hutts are shown with references various gangster favourites such as Marlon Brando from The Godfather and Edward G. Robinson from 1930s gangster movies.

The story is fun and has a lot of humour with a bit of darkness that gives it some edge.

One moment seemed oddly illogical as a droid declares the device containing information about the Hitt's illegal activities has been removed from a tomb when they should not have known it had been there. But it could be glossed over as a very quickly observant assumption I suppose.

Apart from that it is all entertaining and there is a great battle between Cad Bane and his 2 Jedi pursuers.

It also does some good universe building as we see beautifully animated alien worlds and see more of how the Hutts operate.

The dark twist to the escape of Ziro is a great touch.

The Three(pio) Stooges
20 August 2020
This is a comedy filler which actually precedes season 1 episode 22.

It is a pleasant episode in a way but it really is very lightweight and silly. The 'plot' involves Threepio and R2 being sent to get fruit for a banquet. The attempt at making this seem important to Padme and Anakin is unconvincing and the episode lacks logic and substance.

The droids are captured by Cad Bane in order to obtain plans for the senate. It all seems a bit of an odd plan.

This is rather silly fluff rather than a solid episode but it is pleasant for children.

Hutt Heist
20 August 2020
Clone Wars first 3 seasons are strangely mixed up out of sequence and this episode is actually most sensibly watched after Season 3 episode 8.

Bounty Hunters led by Cad Bane carry out a mission to take senators in the senate building hostage so that they can negotiate the release of Ziro the Hutt.

This is an entertaining episode with the excellent villain Cad Bane's sneering threats and Anakin in peril without his lightsaber.

Greedo Grumble
12 August 2020
This episode is very much a filler and not very special but it is quite fun. We also get to see Greedo who has grown up since he was shown as a child in The Phantom Menace but is still a young bounty hunter, long before we see him in A New Hope.

One problem with it is it just feels a bit lacking in substance or any powerful content.

The other problem is Greedo speaks English in a pretty ordinary voice rather than his iconic voice & language from A New Hope. It feels a bit weak and it is a pity they did not recreate that original voice.

But it is not a bad episode, just a filler.

Attack On the Clones
12 August 2020
A brilliant, action packed episode as Grievous and Ventress launch an attack on a clone creating centre of Kamino.

The fact that we get awesome lightsaber battles with Grievous and Ventress and Obi Wan and Anakin is a majorly exciting aspect. We also get space battles, gunfights, clones showing heart and courage and a bit of rivalry between the separatist leaders.

There is also strong dialogue and a cool storyline.

Excellent episode.

The Deadly Assassin
11 August 2020
This episode reminds me of a great 1970s Doctor Who story called The Deadly Assassin as a vision of a politician's assassination brings about an attempt to prevent the murder.

In this case it is Ahsoka trying to save Padme.

This is no match for that classic 4 part Doctor Who story but it is an enjoyable episode with some high quality moments.

Purely Academic
7 August 2020
This is an inoffensive filler with a few nice moments but is nothing special at all. It is at least more interesting and eventful than the previous episode but is still not the usual entertaining standard. It is a pretty bland, unimportant episode.

Ahsoka tries to sort out corruption on Mandalore and works with some angsty teenagers.

Unwanted bug
6 August 2020
This episode is boring compared to the usual entertaining episodes and is a pretty pointless filler.

Black market trading leads to unscrupulous flouting of food standards and a stomach bug outbreak. Hardly material one expects or wants from Star Wars.

There are also a few aspects that are silly and not done well at all.

Not much more to say. I cannot mark it as totally awful but it is just a waste of an episode. Just give us a 20 minute lighsaber duel anytime you want to pad things out and I'd be well happy. No need for stuff like this.

Further adventures of young Boba Fett
6 August 2020
This is a nice follow on from previous episodes featuring young Boba Fett.

We see his hate and his inner conflict spilling over as he seeks to get his revenge on Mace Windu.

The storyline is cool and has some great dark moments. Aurra Sing is a great character and adds real menace and edge.

Ahsoka and Plo Koon get the chance to come to the fore and put in strong appearances.

An excellent episode.

R2 to the Rescue
6 August 2020
A fun episode.

This follows on from the previous episode with young Boba Fett trying to gain his revenge on Mace Windu. It is good to see Fett's past fleshed out a bit and he is a well created character here.

We also see how he is a sidekick for a badass bounty hunter who we end up hearing about in the Solo movie. In addition we get Boosk in a speaking role. Great to see more of Bossk who has a brilliant design. Sadly the voice is pretty unimpressive.

R2 has some amusing scenes and is called upon to save the day.

It is a great idea and a great episode.

Force of Attraction
6 August 2020
I like the way this episode develops a love interest for Obi Wan because, despite what some might think, it fits perfectly with the character of Obi Wan. He admits that in his youth he might have flouted his Jedi rules to be with her but he didn't and he now remains loyal to his Jedi ways by not getting involved with her. It creates a nice romance that cannot be which works well.

There is also fun dialogue, banter and good action in this very good episode.
