The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
A Smashing, Clever and Emotional Ending
Since the first trailer of The Dark Knight Rises was released I started to get interested on Nolan's movie history, I had already saw the 2 batman movies and Inception, which are his most renowned films, but there were some that I had missed: Memento and The Prestige. I saw them and thenceforth my concern about The Dark Knight Rises just exploded, and it got more painful because since I'm from Portugal, the movie was only released on 2th August (13 days after the release on USA).
However I bought the tickets 4 days earlier and I went to see the movie on 02/08. The movie was excellent, I've never had so many chills when seeing a movie in cinema, it was one of my best movie experiences, it was very intense. Nolan really knew how this epic trilogy should be ended. He brought a different perspective than TDK, which I actually preferred, a smashing, clever and emotional ending. His tremendous ingenuity on writing is also included on this transcendent conclusion, which is the most thing that I appreciate on the Nolan's films. The actors are so amazing and talented, I honestly think Christian Bale has done a great job threw this trilogy and he surely deserves at least an nomination for Best Actor for Academy Awards. Anne Hathaway surprised my expectations, I never thought the actress from The Princess Diaries could do such a powerful and graceful performance on her role has Catwoman/Selina Kyle. Tom Hardy surely did a very good performance as well, as much as Joseph Gordon and Gary Oldman. The Soundtrack is astonishing, Hans Zimmer has really outdone himself with this marvelous soundtrack.
To sum up, I recommend to all the people that are going to see TDKR, to see the TDK and Batman Begins and also Memento, or then you will not realize all the interrelations between the whole trilogy. The reason that who should see Memento its because its a very good movie, and because there's a scene (which I really don't know why Nolan did that) where the actor Thomas Lennon plays of Doctor and in TDKR he plays the exact same role, which is pretty weird, "Why would Nolan put the same actor in a 2 same roles in 2 different movies?", well I don't know, Nolan might want to leave us with this doubt. There are some other things that are very curious, that if you pay attention you can might see them.
This movie is a real masterpiece, which certainly takes you to another world. Christopher Nolan is a wonderful Director, Producer and Writer and he surely needs a big applause for his exceptional work at this Epic Trilogy, he didn't only did a very good epic conclusion but he also did a extraordinary superhero trilogy. I can say that from now on, every single movie that Nolan makes, I will be there to see it on it's release date.
12 Angry Men (1957)
An Unexpected Surprise
It as been a while, that I wanted to see this movie, but I never was brave enough to see it, since it is a 90 minute movie, where the movie it's all concentrated on a 12 men deliberation. Otherwise, this movie actually surprised my ideas, indeed.
This movie is surprisingly brilliant, it is very simple but wonderful at the same time, it just shows how can a simple movie without any special effects can be turn to a real masterpiece. The whole cast is amazing, specially Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb which made this film even more incredible, thanks to their powerful performances. The characters are impressive, there is a wonderful job on that department, all jury's are different from each other, in personality and class terms, which in my opinion made a very good character extension. The dialog was genius, very original and creative. Filmography was beautiful, the camera focusing the juror's faces was really impressive with the black and white picture as well. What also impressed me was the impact that this all discussion between the 12 men can make a perfect impression of our society of today, even though this film was made in 1957.
This is really an outstanding classic movie, which is really worth to see, and that I really wasn't expecting for its marvelous success.
