The Oracle (1953)
It Happened Tomorrow 1944,starring Dick Powell was an earlier and better use of this sort of story. The part of this film set on the island is fine but that part set in the newspaper office becomes a drag.Gilbert Harding,a top tv and radio personality of the fifties plays the Oracle
Wears out its welcome after 30 minutes
This initially seemed promising. However after half an hour the film started to drag.Pointless scene followed pointless scene.I sat there hoping for something to happen, but really little did.
Spanish Fly (1976)
Feeble sex comedy
I was hoping that with Leslie Phillips and Terry Thomas in the cast that this would be reasonably funny. However this film gets sillier and sillier as goes on.Sad that Terry Thomas has to end his days playing in this sort of film. This also reflects the sorry state of the British film industry in the seventies.
Station Six-Sahara (1963)
Baker doesn't break into a sweat
A rather strange film made by Artur Brauner, whom I briefly knew and who died aged 100 last year.As usual this is a combination of UK and continental stars. All ending up at this lonely pumping station.Everyone is covered in sweat except Baker.Ian Bannen chews the scenery with relish whilst Denholm Elliott underplays
Swallows and Amazons (1974)
This film only seems to appeal to people who read the book in their youth.I didn't.I found the film a bore and the acting truly appalling.Vastly inferior to any CFF production of the same vintage.
The Mountain (1956)
Making a molehill out of a mountain
It strains credulity to the nth degree to imagine that Robert Wagner,26,is the brother of Spencer Tracy,56 but looking 86.The excellent colour cinematography pick out every crevice in the actors face. The cli!b up the mountain must be among the most boring committed to film.So I abseilled out into Regent Street to prevent altitude sickness
This is an extremely unambitious film.Strange film for Losey to end his career on.Also rather ssdly the end for Diana Dors. She actually looks much better than in previous films where she looked blousy and overweight.Vanessa Redgrave looks like a fish out of water.
The Password Is Courage (1962)
Interesting reflection of contemporary views of the war
This film treats the war as a bit of a lark. The musical background reflects the comedy aspects. The Germans were used as comedy stooges, for example Reginald Beckwiths officer.West Germany was our ally in the Cold war,so we shoudnt be to hard on them they were saying.Auschwitz was mentioned in passing at the end. This was the era when ex prisoners didn't talk about their experiences, and Germany had still not fully accepted the guilt of the Holocaust.
So whilst entertaining this film should not be accepted as a true representation of the life of a pow in Germany.
The March Hare (1956)
What is more annoying Cusack or the music?
It is difficult to know what this film was supposed tobe. What it isn't is entertaining. The music is awful and overly intrusive.Fiscal seems to be doing a bad impersonation of Barry Fitzgerald. The only funny thing in this film are the cartoons in the title sequence.
Ha'penny Breeze (1950)
Little to recommend it
This is a long forgotten B feature about the revival of a yacht building harbour. The story is a bore. The acting is amateurish.A lot of footage is devoted to a yacht race,so if you don't like watching such things then you will find viewing this film a chore.
The Land That Time Forgot (1974)
Cheesy effrcts buy stiill entertaining
Notwithstanding the cheesy special effects this nevertheless an entertaining adventure yarn.Though the puppet dinosaurs cannot compete in effectiveness with those created by Ray Harryhausen
Scars of Dracula (1970)
This entry in the Dracula series was definitely going downmarket.Far more Gore than in other entries, however too much of it inflicted by some very fake looking bats.Patrick Troughton is excellent in his supporting role whilst Dennis Waterman is definitely I'll at ease in his role.
Ordinary People (1942)
This film was made when the blitz was at its height. It gives a view of Londoners calmly carrying on.This of course was the view that the government wanted to perpetuate. There is even an opening title card addressed to historians of the ftre. However it was only one side of the story.Panic and chaos were the other side.Local Authrities totally unrepared.People tracking to the Chislehurst caves was another.
They Also Serve (1940)
A tribute to housewives
Ruby Greirson in was the sister of John Grierson, the father of the documentary. She was an accomplished filmmaker as witness this short.A title at the end informs us that she was drowned when the ship she was travelling on to Canada was torpedoed
Dig for Victory (1941)
Digging can be good fun
So says the narrator of this propaganda short made at a time when the Battle of the Atlantic was going badly. So growing your own food was a big help towards the war effort. The film shows how to plant seeds and plants.
This is a propaganda short about the Glasgow shipbuilding handsOme interesting views of the docks and shops being built, but that's about it.The thick GlassFish accents of the dockworkers is so thick as to be unintelligible.
Albert's Savings (1940)
Reworking of the famous monologue
Stanley Holloways famous monologue,Albert and the Lion,is rewritten to promote the purchase of National savings certificates to aid the war effort.
Army police procedural film
This documentary made for the army shows how the proper procedures must be observed in investigating a crime.
Guru in Seven (1998)
For much of the time the sound was inaudible
For some reason TP TV decided to show this film. The sound was extremely poor and I had to come into this site to find out what it was all about.I think that it was supposed to be a pastiche of Bollywood.Anyway whatever this was supposed to be it ended up as a mess.
Rotten to the Core (1965)
Starts off well but goes downhill rapidly
Despite a good cast this film rapidly exhaust it's welcpme. You just wonder what it would have been like if Peter Sellers had taken the lead role.Unfortunately Anton Rodgers just isn't good enough.Charlotte Rampling features at the beginning of her long career.Ian Bannen is only moderately amusing as her officer lover. The Boultings were starting to loose their touch by this time.
Paris Follies of 1956 (1955)
i was bored after 5 minutes
I read a book through most of the running time it was that bad.Everything is so second rate. Those reviewers who gave it a high rating must have seen a different film to me.This was shown in black and white, not colour.
Wheel of Fate (1953)
Patrick Doonan plays a rather solid stepbrother to tearaway Bryan Forbes who run a garage.Their sick father is upstairs in bed reliant on them.A drunken Forbes brings home a drunk Sandra Dorne who promptly falls for Doonan. There are a number of plot threads that are left hanging. The ending is predictable for this type of drama.Far too much talk.
The Gentlemen (2019)
At nearly every turn of its deliberately complex plot you can see scenes and plot devices from other films of the genre.Fridge freezer is opened, and what a surprise, there is a frozen head in it.Gangster taken by surprise in his car and driven away by hitmen,oh wasn't that from The Long Good Friday?
So far as the script is concerned if you took out all the four letter words it would have been 10 pages long.
High Grant is good in an unusual role for him.
Catch Us If You Can (1965)
Plotless,pointless and boring
It is likely that the laudatory reviews are not unconnected with the fact that this was the first film of director John Boorman.Anyway apart from the fact that this is a rip off of a Hard Days Night the film suffers from the presence of Dave Clark who has the charm and emotional range of a speak your weight machine. This film is strictly for fans.
Black Island (1979)
Not one of CFF s better films
2 teenagers lose the school nature hunt, get in a boat and are shipwrecked on a supposedly deserted island. For some reason two fugitives are on the island, hiding out.The fugitives capture the boys and there are further adventures before the police spot smoke on the island, rescue the boys and capture the fugitives. So not really adhering to the usual OFF formula where children get the upper hand over adults.Nobody seems to be too concerned about 2 boys going missing.Pretty uninspiring.
