Match Point (2005)
4/10
Don't Believe The Tripe
6 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Whoever said "write what you know" first must have been a very successful writer themselves and also ignored by Woody Allen. 'Matchpoint' is a film that writhes and struggles in the quagmire of "American Cinema doing Britain" and as a British movie goer I found myself writhing and struggling in my chair to watch this film .

It is Jonathan Rhys Meyers that ruins this film for me , yes he's good looking and fills out a pair of briefs like a Clavin Klein underwear model but perhaps that is a vocation he should consider as opposed to acting . Myers leaves me unconvinced throughout, unconvinced that he wants Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson) unconvinced he is a man on the edge, unconvinced he is a deceptive liar , unconvinced he is scared of being caught. The scene when Myers visits the police station is where you really see how poor his performance is , one is never sure if he is crying, if he is feeling guilty, if he is being arrogant or if he is afraid .

Myers ruined this film for me , he was the proverbial turd in the punch bowl, he is a sad reminder to many hopeful actors that looks are more important than performance.

The Green Green Grass (2005–2009)
The Only Fools And Horses Cash Cow Has Been Well Milked
9 September 2005
For those who have BBC Three , they will be surprised to see Simon Day's "Grass" being well and truly ripped off by John Sullivan in this Only Fools and Horses spin off . In "Grass" Simon Day's character Billy Bleach "grassed" on a local London gangster and through the witness protection act was relocated to the sticks of Norfolk. The underrated six part comedy tackled the ideas of country meets city and a fish being out of a water. Replace Billy Bleach with Boycie and add Marlene and son Tyler and you have the plot for the "Green Green Grass" staring you in the face . The basic idea of the show is taking Sullivan's well loved east end (of London) humour from Only Fools And Horses and setting it in a completely different background , the opportunities for humour being how will a cockney con man interact with manure kicking yokels instead of the likes of his own ? Coming on BBC 1 on a Friday at 830 vastly limits and waters down the potential for border line humour and leaves the audience with the sort of harmless weak humour that has done "My Family" and "My Hero" no favours and also being an Only Fools And Horses spin off within the early moments the jokes feel very tired because we've had twenty years of it in Sullivan's first sit-com , for instance there is a scene at the beginning where Boycie finds that his satellite navigation system is not up to scratch and guess who sold it to him ?? This joke sets the tone for tired Only...jokes to be repeated again and again , I can imagine Boycie meeting country high society types in the next few episodes and making "hilarious" faux pas , which could be funny if Del Boy hadn't of done it for two decades of Only... . This show will ultimately fail because of the writer and because it is on 8.30 on BBC 1 , devoid and humour and ideas , the strings in your heart it will try to tug are better served by watching old episodes of Only on DVD.

I'll let you try my Wu tang style
19 January 2005
The instant appeal of this film is that I was a fan of the Wu Tang Clan's debut album "Enter The Wu Tang" and the sound clips from the film that the gang used . " You really think your Wu tang style can defeat me ? " , "if what you say is true , the Wu tang and the Shao Lin..could be dangerous " and so forth , so for myself and the mate who I shared a domino's pizza with, we had the delight of hearing those famous quotes on screen and repeating them in true Shao Lin style.

The second major appeal of this cult classic was the star, Mr.Gordon Liu , you may know him better as Pai Mei in Kill Bill volume 2 (who was basically the hardest man in the world) . Gordon is in superb form and emerges from talented but gentle nice guy (if not a bit camp ) jun kip to bald Shao Lin warrior tat chi .

I have a feeling that this would be the 2 main appeals of most potential viewers and for my money they are the only reasons to watch , the Kung Fu is superb and the audience is given the treat of both highly skilled martial arts in equal dosage , it just seems a shame that it is poorly used in a bizarre plot , from point A to point B , it reads as simple , two friends , one of the Shao Lin school and one of the Wu tang school must eventually meet each other in a fight to the death , to determine who's style is best . What lies in between is a plot that can only be described as mesmerising , characters seem to vanish , objectives of characters change through out for no apparent reason , men are locked up in prison with shrieking women , it's all one giant bizarre mess to fill the cassam between the start and the finish .

Watch because you love kung fu (the kung fu is excellent) , watch because your a fan of Gordon liu, watch because your a fan of the Wu tang clan album "enter the Wu tang " but don't watch because you like a good story.

Reveloutionary Cinema
22 October 2003
If you want blood and violence , and more blood and violence and an extra dollop of blood of violence to go with your healthy portion of blood and violence then Kill Bill volume one is a film you should treat yourself to.

Tarantino the self confessed 'film geek ' who's enclyopedic knowledge of cinema is the reason why kill bill is such a finely grafted film of pastiche , homage and with a polish of originality to boot.

The homage in question is to a library of classic japanese and hong kong films 'the street fighter' series featuring sonny chiba are three that immediatley spring to mind .

This is why Kill Bill stands out , in it's language , sub texts , imaget and symbolism it is simply not an american film . With several references to buddhist teachings , wise ancient proverbs and the very japanese garden hose style bleeding not to mention oren ishi's (played by lucy liu) bodyguard go-go could of walked right from the set of battle royal.
