Will you look, or will you choose to look away?
19 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe it was the fear of that which I know so well, the life in the inner city of Nairobi (home of the realest ghettoes in the world, if you ask me)

Either way, I'd been very scared to watch this movie. However I'm glad that I finally got the guts to watch it. With my good friends, we watched the movie from beginning to the end, laughing, frowning, crying, wincing, stopping back in shock- as we were taken through the tumultous life of a hustling young man in Nairobi.

Quick summary.. Mwas (short for Mwangi) just moved from the village to nairobi city, seeking to pursue his dreams. From the very first moment he comes to terms with the fact that Nairobi isn't the city of dreams as he'd been led to believe.

We watch the young man's struggle, from the meager paying lawful job to the harsh life of a criminal, the corrupt police we from Nairobi know too well, the life of shades of grey that most Nairobians know rather than clear black and white lines that few know well to stick to.

The movie was better than I thought it'd be, and ended with a most important question that is still ringing in my mind even at this moment..

Will you look, or will you choose to look away?

Love this show!
25 August 2014
I love this show. I don't know what took me so long to watch it. The parents are awesome, the mom reminds me a lot of my mom, though my mom had a much worse temper. The two sisters are adorable, and the brother is a genuine believable little brother (I have two younger brothers, so I'd know). i love that the girl -can't remember her name because I'm terrible with names, plays basketball. We need to have more shows with active teenage girls. The teenage viewers need to know that it's cool to play sports as a girl. Cheerleading is not the only 'sport' out there for pretty girls. Playing basketball shouldn't automatically mean that the girl is a tomboy.

A beautiful movie depicting the horrid apartheid era in South Africa
10 December 2013
If you are looking for a funny, moving movie that could best depict the life of teenagers during the despicable apartheid era in south Africa, this is one. The main character hooks her hopes on the then imprisoned Nelson Mandela. One easily understands the role Mandela played for his people, and understands the controversies that the apartheid era played on the common public in their every day lives. I would also recommend this movie to those who don't know what apartheid was and are hoping to learn about it in a interesting way. They music and dancing is also wonderfully African. It is sometimes hard for westerners to appreciate the African call-chorus music arrangement. This is why some critics have been very harsh on the music. However I call to them to not look at this movie as a typical traditional musical such as the 'sound of music', it is an African musical and respects African music arrangements. Enjoy the movie :)

What a beautiful edgy movie
2 December 2013
I shan't give it a ten star rating, but this is quite a beautiful movie. Captivating from the first second to the very end. It is edgy, and for most close minded people, could be considered weird, ununderstandable, uninteresting. However to those that love to think outside the box, this is a must watch for you. You shall be driven to love and hate most of the characters, and your definition for love and friendship shall be redefined. The main character, it is quite impossible to describe her. A true heroine from the beginning to the end. There is a lot of symbolisms and metaphors used in the movie, so maximum attention is recommended.

An appreciation of the show
5 May 2012
This show may not be as witty, or fast tracked as it can be, but it sure is the best show with an African American heroine ever created. A lovely change to see a powerful and beautiful woman in charge and handling her life, it is realistic in that it doesn't contain too many plots, it is intense yet light enough for the average viewer and it is continuous enough to maintain its audience and yet fragmented enough to keep each episode's plot detached. I adore this show and I hope it goes on for a while and maybe brings out the humane side of Olivia like her family other loves before the president. The more tough but humane she is, the more in love with her we shall be. Good job Kerry!
