Inside Job?
15 February 2010
First of all when you watch this or if you have already, then keep one thing in mind, ... this film quite literally names countless people as being "in on it" or "having inside knowledge" including the FDNY (who risked and sacrificed their lives that day) to a BBC News Station because a reporter said the WTC7 had collapsed 20 minutes before it did. For one thing, I seriously doubt our government would let a European news station in on them being the mastermind behind the worst attack on US soil since Pearl Harbor. Seriously? Also, go watch the news reports again, everyone was talking about the WTC7 coming down because the firefighters heard it groaning and it was fully engulfed and had a giant chunk taken out of it. The news station misunderstood "It will come down" for "It has come down", due to how many people the news passed through on the way to the reporter. They also claim that no plane hit the pentagon and that it must have been a cruise missile despite all the eye witnesses and a number of light post that were knocked down, which could have only occurred if the missile did some serious zig zag maneuvering to hit them before striking the pentagon. I think a planes wingspan hitting them seems more logical. Go type in 911 Case Study: Pentagon Flight 77 in youtube and you will get a very clear picture of what happened. I could go on and on, but if you take some time to research yourselves then it's not hard to find the facts. However, if you want a good place to go with a great presentation of the facts then you can visit http://www.youtube.com/user/RKOwens4 . It contains several videos closely examining the different accusations and even sheds some light on new information.

Lost (2004–2010)
10/10
Words can't describe...
26 October 2009
how brilliant this show is. I put off watching it because I just never got into TV shows. I watch a ton of movies but very rarely watch any shows on television because they never really grab me. Lost is a rare gem, especially for a television show. You could have grouped up every two shows and released them in theaters as movies and it would have been worth the ticket price to go see them. Many films fail to reach the bar that Lost has raised for television. I just started watching the first season through netflix and I am almost done with the season. There are 25 episodes and I just finished number 20. Not only is this an incredibly well shot show, but the story is simply breathtaking. The writers really fleshed out an enormous narrative, and the complexity of the story and characters is astounding. I have not reached a part of the narrative where I felt the story became the slightest bit stale. I don't know how else to describe this show apart from I believe it is one of the few masterpieces of film and television this generation. If you have not seen it, then do. You will not be disappointed.

Are you a martial arts fan?
26 September 2009
I love martial arts films. I am particularly fond of the old Jackie Chan and Jet Li films amongst others. I guess you could say I am fan of hard hitting martial arts where the actors really put their abilities and bodies to the test. Honestly I am not so much a fan of the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon sorts, too much wire work and it doesn't feel real or organic to me.

Tony Jaa is the new kung fu master of cinema. He also happens to be a mighty fine director although I know he had help. This film is brilliantly filmed and has everything you could want from a Martial Arts film minus the wimpy wired stunts. OK there might of been wires used a couple of times at the end, but not much. The point is if you like hard hitting martial arts epics with great stories then this is a must see. The story is pretty good compared to most films in this genre, and the fight scenes are breath taking. I found this on Xbox live for like 1200 points, (which is pretty expensive for a movie) and was wondering if I made a mistake paying so much. I am getting to see it before it hits theaters so I understand the steep price. After watching I feel is was well worth the 1200 points. This is definitely one of the greatest martial arts actions flicks I have scene. It even throws in a little drunken master style in one scene which is one of my favorites. :)

It is amazing..

how people will defend Michael Moore as if somehow showing he is dishonest is representative of the democrat party as a whole. I found this movie an honest look at Michael Moore and who the man really is, compared to what he sells himself to be. Sure, the filmmakers were probably a little miffed at Moore by the end of their film, but that was a result of Michael's mentality. He claims to support the little man, but offers little support for the crew of this film who ask time and again for a sit down interview.

Michael is doing the same thing that he demonized Roger Smith for supposedly doing 20 years ago. On top of that his excuses are incredibly lame. "I can't interview with you until after the election, but then I have to sleep for 6 months,.. then we can do an interview." "Oh now, I can't do an interview because I am about to start my next movie, and it will be another years or so before I could possibly do an interview." (not exact quote mind you)You would expect someone like him to not only be supportive of those who admire him, but also a fellow documentary filmmaker.

So yes a large part of this film is meant to show Moore's character, which seems to have more of the same qualities as the type of people he claims to be against as opposed to those he claims to defend. Apart from that it is not hard to find evidence of his factual inaccuracies in his films. It amazes me how people still defend his work only because he is outspoken and shares the same political views. A little research will bring up many things that show how dishonest his work is.

Bottom line.. this is a film made by left winged filmmakers who are not making a documentary against democrats, but rather a dishonest filmmaker that ultimately would do more to harm the party he claims to represent rather than help it. I don't care how much I agreed with someone's view points, I would never support someone that was this dishonest, and in fact would be ashamed to have them be apart of my party.

Rambo (2008)
8/10
For those rambos fans..
25 May 2009
I have been a Rambo fan for many years. In fact I have fond memories of building forts out of couch cushions as a kid while watching Rambo only to destroy them through wrestler type body slams. These movies always got me hyped up, and for good reason. They were balls to the wall hardcores military movies that were more about showing the incredible force that a single determined soldier could bring. Which was a an incredible action experience. However, make no mistake,... Rambo 4 is a different movie from the rest. This movie does not follow then same theme from the rest. It is in a universe all it's own. Yet it is just as good. It has a heart to it not seen in previous films. A main plot point is a Christian group going into a trecharous world that only a bold soul would venture to. Being a Christian myself I find the portrayal of the Christian missionaries very tasteful. Rambo will please the action fans looking for intense action. It is as hardcore as an r rating will allow. Rambo fans will not be disappointed with the action but will need to understand the new direction the rambo series has taken. It isn't like the others. The theme as changes, but the action is still taken up a notch.

Balanced review for all types of movie goers.
15 May 2009
First of all I have never seen the original. In fact in my opinion it is probably pretty futile to make comparisons to the original. Without seeing the original I can tell that there are a lot of changes made. I think it would be best to judge this film on it's own merits as if it wasn't a remake.

Because let's face it, how often do remakes really stay true to the original, besides Gus Van Sant's psycho that if I remember correctly recreated the original shot by shot apart from a few added bits.

I would assume that those who have seen the original would not hold this film in high standing and with good reason. It does not reach the heights of the original masterpiece yet claims the same name and story.

Like I said I have not seen the original and I was very hesitant about seeing this one given the large amount of negative reviews. I don't think the film is as bad as many make it out to be, it just suffers from at least one major weakness that I have observed.

That is how well the story and characters were fleshed out. I thought the characters personalities fit well enough, and Jaden was not as obnoxious as some claim him to be. I can easily see a young boy in that situation acting just the same way as he did.

I found it to be an enjoyable film but it didn't wow me. I think it's problem is that it didn't have it's plot and characters fleshed out enough for the serious film goer, and it didn't have enough action (aka eye candy) for the action junkie. It fell somewhere in the middle without fully satisfying either extremes of moviegoers.

There were many things that I thought were done very well in this film, but overall it didn't have enough to connect with the different types of audiences and as result has become a fairly forgettable film with some very interesting and well done parts that I believe make it worth at least one viewing if you haven't seen it.

The Fall (I) (2006)
10/10
An incredibly deep epic adventure.
30 September 2008
This is truly a masterpiece. It is some of the most amazing cinematography I have seen and the story is incredibly well paced. It does not drag or become tedious, but it still very thorough at exploring the very interesting dynamics that the story and it's characters offer. It flows very well through a range of emotions and can be just as funny as it is dramatic. There is action, adventure, romance, comedy, drama, and even gets a little spooky a couple of times. This is a film that hard core film buffs could thoroughly enjoy as well as your average moviegoer. I am sad to see that this didn't get a larger theatrical release cause I believe it could have done quite well. Regardless it is now on DVD and if you have not yet see it, you should make a point to as soon as you can. It truly captures the spirit of the classic adventure tales, like few movies do. I was very impressed as to how well it intertwined it's adventure portion of the story so very well with the dramatic story taking place inside the hospital. It is just so well crafted. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this grand achievement in film making.

Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
8/10
Well executed action film.
11 January 2008
It's kind of hard to describe Shoot 'em up. Yes the plot isn't incredibly deep, but it's solid. The action is completely ridiculous, but in a fun and stylistic way. Yes this is a balls to the wall action film, but it is obvious that the style and execution was thoroughly thought out. The acting was good, ...you could tell that the actors really enjoyed their characters. In fact I think it was the sarcastic vibe of the film that made it find it's niche. I guess you could call it the artistic ridiculously out of control balls to the wall sarcastic action comedy of the year. Bottom line, .. it is just a whole lot of fun, and very pleasant to watch, even for someone like myself who can be over critical of movies. If your not sure, at least give it a rental.

Bloody Sunday (2002)
10/10
Haunting realism.
24 February 2007
If you are a fan of the documentary genre then this film is right up your alley. Everything from the visual style to the sound comes across as if there was really a documentary crew following the events of that day. The actor's performance are so fluid and reactive of the films atmosphere that you completely forget all together that you are watching a narrative film. Understand that this means that this is truly unlike your normal movie, even a historically based one at that. People have complained of the camera shakiness and even the unability to understand everything that is being said. But when watching this you have to understand that in order to make a documentary style film, you have to shoot...well.... documentary style. Which means no lighting set ups... which they didn't have... or even having everyone and everything being said perfectly recorded. However.. certain dialogue from different main characters... even that which was off in the distance could be heard clearly for the sake of communicating what was going on with the characters.. but apart from that... it is pretty raw. However this is one film that will haunt you for quite a while.

finally a worthy depiction of Texas football and it's people.
19 June 2005
I Grew up in Abilene which is where part of this film was shot. I didn't see FNL for a long time because I have never been to impressed with many of the films that have come around the west Texas area, or really just films about Texas in general. Varsity Blues was fun to watch but laughable when it to realism. However, growing up with these teams featured in this film, I must say that I was impressed with how accurate this film is. Now it is not perfect, there were definitely some creative license taken. However, I can tell that Peter Berg really put the time into this to make it as authentic as possible. This is not your typical sports film like others have said. That is because it is real. Peter Berg, unlike some other filmmakers, did not try to change aspects of the real events to make it more acceptable or cheerful. He stayed true to what happened and simply told it how it was. Being a film major myself, I have to say Peter Berg has finally gotten something right that others just couldn't seem to get. That is that you don't have to follow the Hollywood Movie-making Formula that we see over and over, to make a great film.

Very well done and very crappy all in one.
1 June 2004
I was really expecting an amazing epic from Luc Besson. I think The Professional is a classic, and The fifth Element is one of my favorite sci fi movies. Yes, Besson did pull of some pretty good looking camera work in some of the scenes. In fact the were parts that I though looked simply amazing. Then there were scenes, such as some of the battle scenes were it appeared to me that the soldiers were not really going at it, but just play fighting. I was watching the soldiers fighting in the back ground and it really did look like they were just going through the motions of fighting like it was their first time practicing, until the camera suddenly cut to a close up and someone's leg gets chopped off. The battles were also quite confusing since I never really knew who was the french and who was the English. I didn't know who was kicking who's a$$ until it was over and someone cried "WE WON!" I didn't feel that there was any real deep character development, either. The dialogue was maybe a little too modern also, including the accents. It seemed that there was little effort to give the dialogue any historical value. The movie did have it glorious moments but for me personally there was just a lot missing the should of been there for a movie like that.

Come on people.
27 May 2004
You know maybe this film has it's strong political views but when people come here to read reviews most of them who don't have a chip on their shoulder could care less. Just a note on politics, it's not the democrats or republicans fault, it's because people are more concerned with beating the other one in the ground that they can't work together. Our country is literally in a political civil war and that is why we have problems. Play the blame game all you want, but I have met too many republicans and democrats alike who will hate someone and any ideas they have strictly based on the fact that they are a member of the other party. Alot of people who are very serious about politics (as intelligent as they may be) are some of the most immature people I have seen. It seems to me that the main goal of politics is to destroy the other party rather than work for a better future. Everyone wants to whine and complain about this and that, when the truth is that the democrats and republics both have very smart and capable people, that if they really worked together could get a lot done but instead would rather spend their time talking trash. Absolutely ridiculous.

A very well crafted memoir of the crucifixion.
27 February 2004
It seems that people have given this film bad ratings because they didn't like all the violence. That's the only explanation I can come up with since I saw nothing wrong with any aspects of this film. It is a very realistic and haunting depiction of Christ's final hours. I was very impressed with the cast and crew who were apart of this film, and I believe that they really put everything they had into it. However, I think it is a little silly to consider the violence as downfall of the film, considering what it's purpose is. It seems that a lot of people have a hard time understanding Mel Gibson's motivation. I however have had no misunderstandings regarding what he has done or why he did it. The crucifixion is the center point of the Christian faith and the reason is that it shows just how deep God's love goes, and what he is willing to do for us. It takes someone deeply devoted to loving others to pray from someone's forgiveness after they have tortured and mocked you so extensively. Many have a hard time grasping the fact that it is possible to care for someone that much. That is what this film is about, and without the brutality this point couldn't be made. If I remember correctly there was some pretty disturbing images during Schindler's List but I would like to know who would want to confront Steven Spielberg and tell him that he is wrong for showing such brutal violence. These movies are made to shock you and make you cringe, so that we can thoroughly understand something of great significance that we couldn't be there to experience for ourselves. In closing, if you take into the account the purpose for which this film was made then you cannot deny that this is nothing short of a masterpiece. Just because it isn't what you want it to be does not make it a bad film, some people need to understand that.

Paycheck (2003)
The value depends on the expectations.
4 January 2004
Paycheck is not a bad movie, but it's not a great one either. But it really depends on your expectations. I enjoyed the movie, but being as much into film as I am, I can't help to think that such a great plot could have been filmed and acted in a better style. I believe that John Woo is a great director and his style is actually really good. I have nothing against Ben Affleck either and think that he has given us some good performances. I have always loved Uma Thurman and thought she was great. But I don't think that they were really the best options for this movie. It may just be me, but there seemed something off. Everyone is great but it just didn't seem like they really fully connected. I'm not saying it was a bad movie, I did enjoy watching it actually, but there are just a few people who I think good would have fit some of the roles better, that's all. They all gave good performances, and I will say that this is a fun movie to watch. The plot is actually pretty clever, I have to say. Worth seeing I think.

It's a fun movie don't take it too seriously though.
25 December 2003
One of the biggest complaints people seem to make about movies is it's unbelievability. I am a huge movie buff, and I can't help but to critique a movie while I am watching it. Now if I am watching a movie that is supposed to be based on a true story or is meant to depict real situations.. or really anything that is meant to be taken seriously, I will be very picky about details and how it was done. However, I understand that there are movies that are made strictly to be fun. L.O.E.G. is not Schindler's List, it is meant to be entertaining.. (eye candy as some would put it), so to say that you didn't like it because the plot or simply the things they did or had were unbelievable seems very strange to me considering that it is based on some of the most unbelievable but well liked fictional characters we have known. So it is believable that an invisible man, a vampire, a man that can suddenly change physical form to become a giant beast joining forces with a few other people included is believable,... but giving them extraordinary technology and putting them in extraordinary situations is going to far? If you don't like these kind of movies then don't watch them.... I however do enjoy watching movies with cool special effects, as well as the more serious and artistic films. The movie delivered what it was meant to deliver, and that is some very stunning visuals,... come on really,.. what did you expect? League is a fun movie to watch, it's not going to be nominated for Best Picture or anything like that, but if your looking to escape reality and experience a quite stunning fantasy world with some pretty cool characters then you might rent it. Not too bad.
