Ms. Marvel (2022)
10/10
Such a feel good superhero story!
15 September 2022
I guess being a brown girl in US myself makes this highly relatable to me and frankly the lead and almost all the other characters are just so perfectly cast. And the cinematography and the music is just wow! Ingenious way of showing the vibrant imagination of Kamala, who is played so adorably by Iman.

I can understand some of the other reviewers who were sad about the below standard CGI effects, which is true and the messy storyline, which is also true. However, I didn't go into the series looking for another awesome effects Marvel movie, we have enough of those already. Neither did I expect a storyline that makes sense, most superhero stories are nonsensical if you really try to find scientific logic in them. It's a Disney TV show and it's aimed at young adults, so of course it's not too dark and the storyline is messy like most TV shows based on teenagers. But the story of Kamala Khan understanding her past and present and finding her own place in this world through her new-found superpowers and accepting herself as Ms Marvel was thoroughly enjoyable to me. Also, as an Indian, I would say however much they showed about the India-Pakistan partition wasn't wrong, anything more would have made it an R-rated show so of course they couldn't go into the dark details but they still did a great job.

And did I mention yet how cute her whole family is? Made me miss my mom, dad and brother and teen years which were weirdly similar even though so different. It's not a show for everyone, but come on a 1 or 2 is ridiculous, when the boring and over-saturated falcon and winter soldier has 7.2 on IMDb.

NCIS: Dead Man Talking (2004)
Season 1, Episode 19
4/10
So much lost potential in this episode. And come on Kate and Abby, you should know better.
12 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I love NCIS and I am on the 3rd rewatch of the entire early seasons. Yes, Tony grows on you over the seasons and his character matures a lot, but in the early seasons his actions are almost unbearable, especially his tendency of being a creepy voyeur and his treatment of his female colleagues and interviewees always borders on sexual harassment. I usually ignore his mannerisms considering it was shot in early 2000s. However, I still can't get over this episode and it's blatant homophobia and transphobia by almost all cast members. I loved the story overall, it was emotional, thrilling and dramatic. However, the ending where the characters like Kate, McGee and even Abby acted somewhere between shocked, disgusted and horrified at the Lt. Voss's transition into Amanda was very badly written. Tony's reaction makes sense because he's written like a traditional jock kind of teenage-minded man who can be highly inappropriate but means well. It's in keeping with his character. Gibbs is also kinda okay because he is much older and of a different generation and he doesn't really make any pointed comments on this topic. Gibbs and McGee's reactions are more like most people who do not understand queerness but find it inappropriate to joke about it. However, the reactions of Kate and Abby where they refuse to consider Amanda a woman, won't use female pronouns, act horrified at the thought of gender transition and won't stop joking about "Tony dating/kissing a man" is not at all in keeping with their characters as good, liberal and mature women. Of course, they should still have made fun of Tony for his transphobia and homophobia but it could have been done without throwing shades at the character's sexual identity or at least trying to be more understanding to the reasons behind it. There was so many things they could have dealt sympathetically with here-homophobia and transphobia in US military or how the issues faced by a queer person can sometimes push them over the edge. Instead they killed off the character without any proper explanation and made her into a total joke.

Atypical (2017–2021)
9/10
The season 3 is even better!
20 November 2019
I binged the first season when it originally was released on Netflix and then also binged the second season when it was released and now the third season. I have liked the show from the start and even though I or my brother are not on spectrum, I could relate to it as I come from a similar atypical nuclear family of 4. I found it adorably funny and very well acted, especially the lead, Sam and his sister, Casey. But the 3rd season knocked me out with how much more it engaged me with the storyline. The characters, even the supporting ones like Zahid, Evan, Izzie and Paige, have grown into their characters and have amazing chemistry. While Sam and Casey's sibling chemistry was spot-on and heartwarmingly amusing from the first episode, their relationships with the other characters seemed much more real and nuanced and believable. Especially Sam and Zahid are like the perfect Bros/homies! I have rarely seen such a heartfelt depiction of male friendship on a TV show. And it's not sappy, it's funny, weird, crazy and emotional like all real friendships and so unlike the stereotypical way they usually show male friendships (especially when one of them is on the spectrum) on TV/movies. And thank God, the parents also resolved their issues coz frankly I felt their issues were dragged too long. Also, Sam and Paige's relationship grew deeper as Sam finally learned to show his love and appreciation in his own way. I also liked how they contrasted the difficulties of adjusting to college life between Sam, the "atypical" person and Paige, the neurotypical over-achiever who went to her dream school. Sometimes, the things that others see as weakness can actually turn out as one's biggest strengths. One of the best things that I have watched this year, and I have watched a LOT of amazing movies/shows this year.

Hey all,it gets better, be patient
28 September 2019
I agree the first few episodes and interviews seemed a bit awkward and even I (a bi brown woman) felt she was using that topic too much. However, she was just settling into the show so I was patient and she's become much better already. I am loving her monologues especially, even funnier than her YouTube videos and some of her interviews have been much more engaging than watching those of other late night hosts. I am sure she is going to keep learning, get into her groove better and improve even more. I usually don't review things but this has too bad reviews for no reason at all.

Black crime comedy by Netflix
19 August 2018
Indian movies are rarely made in this genre so it gets points for the attempt. I found the acting good enough and some parts of the movie were very funny. Loved the story! Some parts didn't make sense as it's supposed to be based in Delhi but the locations, accent and court system didn't make sense, seemed more like some small town in Haryana. But, apart from that it was a pretty well written comedy of errors.
