Gunsmoke (1955)
Love it.
I watch this on the Encore westerns channel and I must say I love it as much today as I did when I first saw it. Thankfully there are like 20 seasons of episodes for them to run. This is absolutely the best of the 50's and 60's westerns and that's quite a feat considering there were quite a few good ones including Rawhide, The Virginian, Bonanza, Have Gun Will travel, Wagon Train etc. Dillon wasn't an angel, he was conflicted at times, but he was wise and had integrity knowing what's right and wrong. He didn't hesitate to deal out some frontier justice to people who deserved it so he was no Gene Autry. The cast of characters was always good but I must admit I've always found Chester kind of annoying.
The Thing (1982)
Great flick
This is one of my favorite movies of all time and definitely a must see for sci fi horror buffs. I'll just run down the pros for you as I can't think of any cons.
Acting was superb. Everyone is believable and their fear is palpable. Kurt Russell is the great anti-hero and is great as the "clutch" guy who really doesn't give a f***. John Carpenter did NOT do the music, Ennio Morricone did thank goodness and his score set the mood perfectly. John Carpenter should not score movies even though it's apparent he loves to dabble in music. Is he trying to save a buck or is it ego? Rob Bottin's special effects were phenomenal though they were considered gross and too gory when the film was released. The story is different from original version though the original was good also. This is by far John Carpenter's best movie and is much better than Halloween imho.
Along with Alien this is as good as sci fi-horror gets.
The Other Side (2006)
A must see for people who like bad movies
I bumped my rating to a 3 after seeing the budget for this movie was 15k. They did make a bad but not horrible movie for that kind of dough. I mean at least it's not Heaven's Gate. The acting was sub par, the action sequences were particularly bad and the writing was yawn inducing. You have to suspend disbelief when watching this type of movie but in this case you have to suspend intelligence also. If I had the hour and a half back I'd take my dog down to the park and videotape him pooing on the grass. Don't believe the rave reviews you've been reading here as this movie is like an after school special from the 80's blended with a direct to video action flick starring Don Swayze and Frank Stallone.
Priest (2011)
OK, but not good
You'd think a 60 million dollar budget would make for a seriously awesome scifi-horror flick but this one misses the mark. Sure it's worth a look but the CGI is sub par with the vampires looking like obvious CGI vampires. It's difficult to do real looking eyes(see The Hulk) so guess what? All the baddies are eyeless. Problem solved. Anyway, where is Ray Harryhausen when you need him? The action sequences are few and far between and what's with the main vampire(Urban) being in the movie for all of like 5 minutes? Paul Bettany and Maggie Q(yum) are good as is Karl Urban but the sheriff character is unintentionally comical.
