Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002)
Don't see anything wrong with it...
Well, as much of a movie watcher, I myself wouldn't say I'm much of a fan for prequels, midquels, and sequels, since most of them don't turn out well as the original. We all know Disney hit rock bottom when it came to making additions to some of their greatest films. A majority of them were either a hit or miss, and some were just pointless to begin with.
However, when I came across this film, I found it as something still enjoyable. I really loved the concepts and ideas Disney implanted throughout the making of this movie. To me, it added a little more variety to the Cinderella franchise. I'll start off with the first story in this.
Basically this is Cinderella's first time in a castle. The intendants and personnel try to teach her on how to be a princess and prepare a banquet they believe is the right way. Unfortunately, Cinderella's so acclimated to living the same lifestyle she did with her cruel stepmother and sisters that she's dissatisfied with the way the traditions are run. Rather than following the usual traditions around the palace, Cinderella decides to organize the upcoming party in her own way rather than intended. Not only does this display Cinderella's great responsibility, but this story also shows how diversifying things can benefit for the better.
The second story possibly the most interesting for me, or the third for that case. This was probably the first time I've ever seen Disney focus on a minor character, let alone giving him more development. Jaq is fed up of living the life as a mouse in a castle that he wishes to be a human. The Fairy Godmother does of course grant his wish, but much to his dismay, Jaq isn't pleased with it. It doesn't stop Pom Pom from chasing Jaq around and none of his former mice friends even recognize him. He then wishes to return to his old life in the end. Taking something you really desire for granted might not always bring you happiness.
Now, for the finale. This story's importance rivaled that of the second's, IMO, as it also gave more development to a minor character. Anastasia falling in love with a kind and common baker shows how little freedom she has to make her own choices in life when her mother Lady Tremaine and older sister Drizella disprove and berate her of this. Even with Anastasia's past hostility towards her, Cinderella's generous enough to help her stepsister overcome the barrier placed in front of her.
I feel like a lot of viewers missed out on the importance these three segments of the movie served. This movie may not've been the best sequel Disney made during the time they went downhill for 10 years, but it's certainly not the worst. Some younger and even older audiences should find this still to be entertaining and enjoyable.
