Don't Look Up (2021)
Ou La La - La La La
C'est pour moi.
C'est pour vous.
And when we brag about our 'liberty', And they laugh at you and you and you and me, 50 million Frenchmen can't be wrong!
Code of the Freaks (2020)
Jramirez-66906 offers a nice review of this documentary about how disabled and physically different people are oftentimes portrayed in movies.
But one section of the docu gets into animation (cartoon) and I felt that was a bit off course. Plus it really isn't that necessary to have a real disabled person portray a disabled character. It's called 'actinng'!
I once saw an opera in which an asian singer played the leading role of a Scottish woman in an opera written by an Italian composer. Did it make a difference in the story -- no!
Simple film with a message
The title is 'Hunter' and the book spoken about by Gavin and Carter is - The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.
Each character here wants to 'connect with another' yet we all keep a thin layer of ice between us because we fear being 'known'! Therefore in our own ways we deceive ourselves and others through various ways. Hopefully the hunting heart will discover that which is often right before us.
Certainly not the best acting nor production here. But the plot is honest and the message came across clearly to me. Why other reviews here missed it is a mystery to me.
Electrical life? ....
.... Well maybe battey powered.
Probably a truely interesting man for that time during the early 20th century. But this flick just makes him look off-his-rocker. And the whole happiness and bliss in the perfect country cottage is just honey coated sentimental glop. And then the tragedy ! Such melodrama! And the rest of the flick just stumbles to a conclusion. I never was aware of the electrical life outside of him speaking the word elecricity.
I became bored with his recurring 'mental water hallucinations' and Mr. Wain is just annoying. Good luck enjoying this one.
Li'l Abner (1959)
Odd ball muical comedy
My suggestion is to just watch this film and let the crazy characters of Dogpatch entertain you. Especially Mammy Yokum and the incredible Stupefyin' Jones plus Appassionata Von Climax. Great names!
The colorful photography and sets are a visual pleasure and the plot line will have you smiling. There may not be memorable songs to offer but the musical numbers are fun and most entertaining!
A delightful and different musical!
The Last Bus (2021)
Nicely produced movie but ...
... the story of this tenacious old man on his journey to the most southern tip of Britian is ruined by scenes of melodrama and sentimental glop.
I stuck with the movie beause I wanted to see how his journey would conclude. It's most predictable and the story just ends.
This little movie is very watchable and you do get emotionaly involved with the old man and how he will reach his destination.
Too may chefs spoil the soup
The opening credits list China Film Co. Ltd., Media Asia Films, Shanghai Film Group, and Tencent Pictures as production companies for this film. Thus the title of my review.
This movie runs over two hours but those two hours pass quickly as this story is presented. The film is beautifully photographed. All the actors are attractive and the costuming is glamorous! That's the good part of this movie!
Unfortunately it also ruins the movie! It seems every production company had their own idea of how this story should be presented. Thus everyone is too clean, settings too fancy, and the struggle and suffering of the founding members of the CCP is diminished. Post WW1 China may have been great for the wealthy but the workers, the everyday laborers, suffered - filth, sickness, hunger - and this fact is sorely missing in this movie.
Many times throughout the story the lack funding, to spread the word of the developing CCP, is mentioned. But everyone appeared well dessed and fed.
Plus the story line jumps around from China to Russia to France to wherever else. This made the story confusing at times and hard to follow. And when the movie ends you wonder why you watched it.
The Premise (2021)
Five short stories that offer something to think about and at the end of each story is a twist.
I'm thinking the negative reviews here didn't really watch the shows throughly. It's the endings that elevate this show to express our human condition.
B. J. Novack aced this short series.
Falling for Figaro (2020)
Danielle Macdonald shines
What a pleasant film to see Danielle Macdonald excell with her charming acting as Millie the 'hope to be opera singer'!
This is an easy uplifting story to watch. It make no statements nor projects any message. It's just about two people seeking their personal dream. And the music and singing are a delight.
Between Two Worlds (1944)
This 1944 movie is one not to be missed
This much more competent version of the 1930 flick 'Outward Bound' may be a bit dated in it's look but the story is solid. The story is the star here! Not one of the multiple famous actors here outshines another.
My only disappointment is the overly melodramic ending. Paul Henreid plays his part in the final scene way over the top. But do not let this tiny flaw stop you from taking this film in. It's still uniquely captivating. A most unusual film for the time in which it was made.
Outward Bound (1930)
The same place
As Scrubby say's "We're saling to heaven and hell too! You see they are the same place."
This 1930 flick is the hell. It hasn't held up with time. The style of pop-faced reactions and over blown physical expression is difficult to watch and borders on laffable. The 1944 remake 'Between Two Worlds' is the heaven of this story. If you can find it, it's well worth a watch.
The Outward Bound version is a good one to skip over!
Gore for the sake of gore !
The first half of the first episode is what got my attention. But the second half of the first episode is horror, blood, gore and a stupid bore!
I gave up and stopped watching. Dump this production off your 'to watch' list!
It's just stupid and pointless.
Vacation Friends (2021)
Silly fun funny
This flick keeps the most predictable plot flowing with characters you have to like. Conservative couple let themselves loose with another couple who have no problem with 'partying' under any circumstance.
Everybody has fun including the viewer! This is a lighthearted nonsense comedy that succeedes in entertaining - but you've seen this type of flick before.
Drain the Oceans (2018)
Background music is now Foreground music
After about 5 shows I have abandoned this series! Why? Because you cannot hear 90% of what the 'experts' are saying due to the former background music which is now 'LOUD' foreground nuisance music.
Is this on purpose to distract the viewer because the info offered about the findings is useless?
An awful production mistake.
The White Lotus (2021)
Really great until ---
--- Episode 6 !
At series end the show comes across as sophomoric and oh so predictable.
I'm giving 8 stars because the first 5 episodes are fasinating and surprising.
Tig Notaro: Drawn (2021)
Engaging stream of consciousness
Tig delivers a most engaging stream of consciousness comedy cartoon. Once she starts with the Kool-Aid Man I was hooked to the finish. Her style of humor is witty with a bit of a twist on how we react to our own life and those around us.
Catch this show is worth every minute!
Welcome to Chechnya (2020)
Mans inhumanity to man
To be honest I couldn't finish this movie because it turned my stomach. How crewl can people be to those who just want 'to be'? Obviously they can be very crewl.
With each show that I see about how the LGBT citizens are oppressed and punished I always say - "Look at the source of the hate - religion - all religions! And this hate is preached in the pulpit and supported by people tithing to finance this hate.
FBoy Island (2021)
I didn't quite get it
The show opens with three beautiful women and 24 muscle boys. Everyone is beautiful (except for the tattoos). Then almost right from the start at least 10 of the men are eliminated! You never see any of the women talking with them. So what was their purpose?
And what was the temperature? The women were always dressed in diaphanous peek-a-boo clothing while the men wore hoodies, swim trunks, jackets, shorts, tshirts, slacks, and one actually wore turtleneck sweaters and blazers!
There wasn't enough Nikki Glaser. So much promise and little delivery.
Darcey & Stacey (2020)
D & S look like two cartoon characters thought up by Comedy Central as middle age "cougars"! Plus Florian and Georgi look more like brothers! One claims to be from Bulgaria the other claims to be from Albania.
The one characterstic all four of these people have in common is - complete narcissism. So which narcissist will prevail? I have no interest of finding out because after three episodes I have lost all interest.
Making Montgomery Clift (2018)
What a great actor he could have been
This docu about Montgomery Clift will leave you saddened. He's the perfect example of a talented emotional man torn in half by what his natural self is and a corrupt society poisoned by religion that demands he be something else.
This is a must see to experience on how Hollywood can oppress and glorify at the same time.
Top of the Town (1937)
Very strange flick
My advice is to watch this odd flick just for the surreal overblown musical numbers. The plot is too rediculous to keep up with!
Some of the scenes are just plain bizarre the further you get into the movie.
The Man with the Answers (2021)
Very watchable road trip flick
Two guys - Victoras and Mathias - make a rather troubled but entertaining trip together.
Victoras is the loner introvert and Mathias is the uninhibited extrovert! Of course both are very pleasant on the eye. The inevitable emotional bond develops between them even after a few bumpy disagreements.
This flick is a nice fantasy for the late 20's early 30's crowd.
The Sparks Brothers (2021)
A serious look into a career in music
Something great seldom comes from 'the average' and there is nothing average about Ron & Russell Mael and "The Sparks Brothers". Their art shines because it's good and they focused on creating great songs and have kept their personal lives mysterious - which only adds to their art!
This docu is over two hours long - but you get to experience a 50 year career in pop music and performance! From adolesence to eldery! They are both in their 70's.
A serious look into a career in music.
Breaking Fast (2020)
A Disney type movie
First read the review titled "Stretching Credulity" and you will get a most insightful perception of this movie!
For me the only beliveable character is Sam. He alone brings to light the delusional path Mo and Kal have wrapped themselves in. And Mo's family is just corny.
Stretching Credulity hits the nail squarely.
Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (2021)
Great CGI but thin in entrtainment
In one hour and thirty minutes you watch the rambunctious Peter Rabbit get all his friends and family involved in a muddled mess while Bea and her husband are consulted by a publisher for another sequel to the Peter Rabbit books.
Then at the end you realize the rejected publisher had the right idea all along!
I found the movie laborious and tiresome. Rewatch the first movie - it's much more fun!
