Amélie-style feelgood rom-com from Ghallywood
15 April 2023
My first Ghallywood movie.

Romeo & Juliet set in Ghana, minus the melodrama and the tragedy.

A lighhearted feelgood comedy, with a simple storyline and a predictable outcome. In a town divided into two opposing groups, a man and woman from opposite sides fall for each other.

The script is a bit childish and naive at times, but it is funny and lighthearted. I liked the yellow and blue sets, clothes and everyday objects. It reminded me of a mix between Wes Anderson and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie.

If you're feeling blue or yellow, this is a good way to spend 106 minutes and end the day with a smile.

Same old, but fun and entertaining
29 March 2023
The same-old-same-old story of (almost) any action movie ever made.

Lots of blind nationalism and obedient soldier crap. A good guy turned bad. Terrorism. Biotechnology. Etc, etc. Not unlike any other american action movie since the 70s. It's just that this is Bollywod so, everything is OTT.

If you know what you're getting into, and forget all the flaws of this type of movie, you're gonna have fun.

I knew what I was getting into and had a blast.

SRK still can't act, but his charisma makes up for it. I can't say no to this man's movies.

Also... Deepika Padukone looks astonishing in every single outfit. Specially the bathing suit scenes and that white spandex outfit. I'm a sucker for girls in spandex.

I have to agree with everybody else, that Salman Khan guest appearence was killer. That train sequence was indeed the highlight of the movie and worth the price of admission.

One time viewing. That's it. I'm gonna be generous and give it a 7/10.

Doesn't deserve the hate it's getting!
8 March 2023
I was kinda afraid after seeing so many negative reviews and seriously low ratings. I'm glad I don't care about any of that and watched the movie.

I really don't get people. Instead of watching a movie, relaxing, and having some fun, they cinically tear it apart for all its faults. It seems that every movie has to be a masterpiece or else, it's just garbage. Bah! What a cynical world we live in.

"Cirkus" is entertaining, funny and colourful. A comedy of errors, with twins separated at birth, made in Bollywood, via Wes Anderson meets Jacques Tati meets Amélie.

I'm not sure if I will ever watch it again, but I liked it.

I was going to give it 7/10 stars, but just to manipulate the ratings a little bit, here's a 8/10.

P. S: I just love watching Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra. They always bring a smile to me face.

Neo-Exploitation Superhero Bollywood style
10 June 2022
Cheesy, derivative and rather uninteresting Bollywood neo-exploitation superheroe flick with a fusion of Tron x Terminator x Last Action Hero x Spy Kids 3 x Mortal Kombat.

Expect a masterpiece of world cinema and you'll be disappointed.

Take it for what it is. Pure entertainment. Then you'll have some fun.

To watch once and move on to the next popcorn flick.

It could have been better!
16 August 2021
This is my least favorite Mamoru Hosoda film.

I like the premise but the end result is not that good. It didn't really work as it should have. There is a lot of heart, but it lacks a decent pacing and felt like a blend of disjointed ideas thrown together.

The worst part: The main character's voice. It was annoying, high pitched, and it almost drove me nuts. He doesn't even sound like a kid. The voice actress should have been better cast.

The best part 1: The great-grandparent story was interesting, intense and highly emotional.

The best part 2: The ending scene with the montage and the flying scene.

No, no, from a Star Wars fan

I really can't get past the awful animation. Feels like I'm watching a 90's videogame. The animation is not fluid and the characteres show no emotion whatsoever. Dead eyes all around. The voice acting is sub-par, the characteres are uninteresting, and the story is generic and more of the same. No thanks.

Flawed, dated, but a classic nonetheless!
5 July 2020
1 - I didn't see anyhting wrong with it. Politically correct has gone to the extreme. I have my ideals and convictions, but too much is just too much. This is a movie held as a classic, based on a classic of world literature, telling a fictional story that takes place in a specific era of US history. That's it.

2 - The movie is dated. Acting, soundtrack, certain parts of the script; it all may have worked back in 1939. Not anymore.

3 - I loved the cinematography and the complexity of the story and the characters. Clark Gable was amazing as the morally ambiguous Rhett Butler. Vivien Leigh was great, though I couldn't feel at times she went OTT, but I guess that's due to the (slightly unnatural) way of acting of the era. The first 90 minutes were a solid 5 stars. Then it started to drag a little bit. The final 30 minutes or so were amazing.

Overall conclusion: It's not a perfect movie, dated, a product of its time, but it is a a great movie nonetheless. A classic everyone should watch at least once in the life.

Brilliant!

Brilliant! A series of unrelated characters and events, spanning 34 years, following some kind of butterfly effect allied to the seven degrees of separation, that end in saving the world from a comet. That final sequence is priceless.

A big pile of steaming Sh t!
7 September 2019
I will use the same vulgar and careless language as the movie.

What the f ck did i just watch? I like genre cinema, be it sci-fi, horror, surrealism, fantasy, a.o, but this is a big pile of steaming sh t. There are some good ideas, but the directing is atrocious, with lots of shaky camera to hide the clumsiness of the directors, and absurd frameworks that not even the great Jess Franco would use (but the spanish director knew what he was doing, there is a big difference). And, let's talk about the cast ... the fewer skills and the more over-the-top you can be ... the better. It's a shame because Carloto Cotta is an above average actor and is being underused in this abysmal sh t. Despite having some good ideas (I liked the fuzzy dogs) and some interesting sequences, this fails roundly. I don't think I will ever give the benefit of the doubt to these directors. This is, speaking in pure, hard and raw terms, a beautiful sh t in 3 acts.

Nevermind the negative reviews
25 August 2019
I don't really care about negative reviews. I'm glad because all the negative reviews this has didn't impede me from watching it. MIB:I was as fun as the original MIB. What were people expecting this to be? The new Citizen Kane? Vertigo? Seven Samurai? This is a mindless action comedy blockbuster. That's it. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson were great. We have special appearences by Liam Neeson and the amazing Emma Thompson. Lots of action, humour and fun. It was better than MIB3, that's for sure. I enjoyed and wouldn't mind having a sequel. Pawny has to be there, of course.

Po di Sangui (1996)

Spirituality and tradition in an African village
8 May 2018
The first film I watched by Flora Gomes was "Nha Fala" and I truly enjoyed it. I was anxious to see more of the director and "Po di Sangui" was one of the titles I had on my watchlist. Unfortunately, the copy of the film I got was dubbed in French. Oh, that awful french dubbing! The little girl is cute and beautifully innocent, but the dubbing attributed to her is especially annoying. This took some of the impact the film could have had. I hope to be able to rewatch this someday in the original kriolu. Apart from this unfortunate detail, I thoroughly enjoyed "Po di Sangui". It is a beautiful film about tradition, spirituality, being one with the land, and a social commentary on the destruction of nature by modern society. Rather than telling us a story with beginning, middle and end, Gomes shows us everything as if we are being told a folk-tale by an elder. Beautiful cinematography complemented with an interesting and enjoyable blend of nature sounds and african rhythms, mystical images and a thin line between reality and dreams are the key ingredients for an amazing and heartfelt work by Gomes. I will remove one star because of the goddammned french dubbing. As soon as I have the opportunity to watch it in the original kriolu, I'm pretty sure 10 stars will be awarded.
