Delirium (I) (2018)
9/10
Disturbia meets Insidious
5 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This was an excellent film that got a lot of things right that SO many others of this genre get wrong. First, you're immediately given a pretty good background of the main protagonist and his family via home video footage. This accomplishes two things: a better understanding of why Tom behaves the way he does and sympathy from the audience.

In a nutshell, Tom is a mental health patient who has recently been released from a psychiatric institution except that he's now being put on house arrest for 30 days in a gigantic mansion aka his childhood home. His Dad supposedly committed suicide just days before his release and his mom "left" him and his brother when they were just teenagers, never to be seen or heard from again. While roaming around alone in the giant mansion, Tom begins to experience many strange things which keeps the audience guessing as to what's real and what could be a hallucination given his current mental state. Yes, there are a few jump scares however in no way does the film rely on these for success which I was pleased with because it keeps the film feeling more like a thriller as opposed to a horror.

What I applaud the most is that by the end of the film, all of the events leading up to the climax are explained in one way or another with no obvious plot holes. This essentially made every scene throughout the movie feel more significant and that each one was there to serve a specific purpose. Another reviewer hit the nail on the head when they noted that everything Tom discovered around the mansion was symbolic of something more sinister.

I feel that a lot of psychological thrillers leave you scratching your head and/or forget to explain important events. This is definitely not the case with Delirium.

I took one star off because although I think that Topher Grace is a phenomenal actor, I felt that he was a little unconvincing at times as a character who is supposed to be mentally ill. Overall, a great performance and an even better film that I highly recommend. Two thumbs up!

Jersey Shore: Realty Edition
3 September 2020
This show is absolutely unwatchable. My girlfriend flipped it on one night and by Episode 3 we were done. Nothing but a bunch of immature drama. The only agent on the show who has even a hint of professionalism and passion for realty is Peggy. It seems like the men are only interested in making money and don't truly care about the clients. Even if I had the money to buy/sell a home in the Hamptons I wouldn't even consider hiring any of these idiots. Smh Netflix...

The Nun (2018)
5/10
Had potential, but fell short
25 December 2018
I had such high hopes for this movie ever since it was announced. I honestly thought the demon nun was one of the scariest characters from The Conjuring 2. However, this film was a huge letdown. It tries so hard to be scary, but it's not. The scenery in the movie is absolutely gorgeous, but this film lacks a descent plot. It is just a bunch of jump scares (most of them predictable) and a few somewhat creepy moments. This movie is still worth a watch, but it won't have you sleeping with the lights on.

Take the 10 (2017)

Total garbage!
22 January 2017
I normally don't review movies, but I just had to take a few minutes to warn everyone not to go near this trash. I only started watching it solely because I'm a fan of Josh Peck and grew up watching Drake and Josh on Nick. This is not even a movie. There is literally NO PLOT! It looks like it is just a cameraman chasing around random people committing crimes and drug deals. They label it as a "comedy" but I didn't even get close to laughing once. The language is very vulgar and inappropriate, containing hundreds of pointless F bombs and frequently references pornography. Not to mention the first 10 minutes of the movie or so ends up repeating itself later on (they literally show the same footage twice). I'm pretty sure you'd have to be high while watching this to even get remotely close to enjoying it. Don't even bother as this crap was 80 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Would have been better with the original actors...
29 February 2016
I discovered the first Born to Race on Netflix and was pleasantly surprised for being a low budget film. Even though the plot was a little predictable, it still came off to be an entertaining independent film. This sequel however, was a huge let down. The only actor who returned for the second movie is the girl who plays Jessica. And the new Danny and Jake do not have the same on-screen tension as the actors in the first movie. It's almost as if you can tell that these two are friends in real life which totally takes away from what is supposed to be an old rivalry. The plot was somewhat boring as I struggled to pay attention all the way through. I give it a 3 and that's being generous.

The Guest (I) (2014)
5/10
Had potential, but then completely failed in the end.
11 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'll be honest the movie started out really good. Most thrillers don't have any tension until 30-45 minutes in but here you felt it almost immediately. The audience could tell right away that there was something wrong with "David." The acting on all parts seemed descent for a low budget thriller. However, here are a few issues I had with this film. 1) I think it's a little ridiculous that the mother of the family invited a complete stranger to stay with them within the first five minutes of the movie. It wouldn't matter if he was a friend of mine or not my parents would never do that if they didn't know him. Besides David kept a butt load of cash on him at all times he would be fine in a hotel. 2) I guess all tough guys can break the law as much as they want and get away with it. Several times throughout the film David uses physical violence to intimidate the people around him and yet nobody does anything like call the police. 3) I'm not a cop but this movie completely makes military police look like helpless wimps as do a lot of other films. How can one guy manage to kill a half a dozen special trained federal officers and walk away barely touched? Plus aren't they wearing bullet proof vests? They seem to get shot in the chest and are killed instantly. 4) The music. The soundtrack for this movie was God awful aside from a few moments of tension building. But the actual song selections were horrible. SPOILER ALERT*** 5) Finally the ending. It seems as if the first hour of the script was done by a professional and then the writer handed the pen to a rookie for the last half hour or so. I was honestly hoping that David was dead after being stabbed and shot several times but let's face it killers in movies never die and seem to always be alive at the end. Also, the detective said they found two bodies (military policeman, the kid's teacher in detention.) When David walked out in a fireman's suit that must mean that he had to kill a fireman for it so where did that body go? If I wrote the script, I would have made the twist be that David was actually the dead son Caleb who fell victim to a foreign based neurological experiment gone wrong and was forced to get plastic surgery and had his brain messed with to think he was a different person. And then instead of having him walk away in a fireman suit I would have had the ending be him knocking on the door of the family of another soldier in that group picture from the beginning saying "Hi, I'm David. I was a close friend of ____"

Not a bad watch overall just like I said it started off good and then had a lot of problems. It's a descent movie for a late night with popcorn and Netflix.

Has potential, but lacks in certain areas.
5 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Would You Rather tells the story about Iris, a girl in desperate need of money to pay for her brother's cancer treatment. While this movie does have potential, I feel it came up short in a few areas that prevented it from being really entertaining instead of just OK. First of all, there is no character development. Some of the "players" are mercilessly killed off before we are able to learn anything about them. Also, I think the "rounds" could have been a bit more creative and psychologically abusive. For instance, there is a scene in which the son of the antagonist tries to rape Iris. Though I would feel bad for Brittany Snow for having to do this scene, after the psycho father learned what happened why not make her choose between actually having sex with his crazy son and stabbing somebody? Also, the ending should be redone. I won't say exactly what happened, but basically all the pain and suffering Iris puts herself through ends up being for nothing. Would You Rather is pretty much a thriller similar to the Saw franchise but executed a little differently. It does make it interesting to see though what people will do for money. Not a bad watch, just not one I'll be watching a second time.

Dead Silence (2007)

James Wan and Leigh Whannell are horror masters!!!
6 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This was by far one of the scariest movies I've seen in a long time. It combines supernatural elements with creepy ventriloquist doll scares at all the right moments. What starts out as a murder mystery soon turns into a terrifying ghost story. The acting was brilliant on all parts and a big thumbs up to Wan and Whannell for a great screenplay. I actually saw this movie after seeing The Conjuring and Insidious, two of Wan's other horror movies, and this one definitely does not disappoint.

SPOILER ALERT*** DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT***

I just gotta say I noticed early on that Jamie's father was dressed like a ventriloquist dummy which I thought was foreshadowing that he was behind all of it. Never was I expecting the shocking plot twist that was actually revealed. Just more brilliance showed by Wan and Whannell. Looking forward to more horror movies done by them in the future!

Great horror movie!
16 November 2014
I honestly don't know why this movie only has a 4.4 rating. Having looked at that before walking into the theater made me a little apprehensive about buying a ticket but boy was I in for a surprise. This movie keeps you scared the whole way through. Contains lots of creative jump scares and good plot twists. Lin Shaye is excellent as always especially in horror movies. The pace does not seem too slow or too fast and there aren't any long breaks between something scary happening. Having said that this movie does require a bit of imagination as most horror movies do but if you push reality aside for 90 minutes you will not be disappointed. In my opinion this is a well-written horror movie that is highly underrated. I would definitely watch it again.

Somebody Help Me 2 (2010 TV Movie)

A pointless sequel...
31 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The original was bad enough. Why in the world would they waste time and money on a sequel? The second one contains horrible dialogue ("I've been in this situation before.. Well I haven't but my husband has") poor acting and it's not even scary. The villain doesn't exhibit any of the same behavior as the first one. This movie may flashback to the original but I don't understand how the first movie takes place in the woods and for some reason this movie takes place in a dark facility. Only reason I gave this movie a 3 is because the surprising twist at the end caught me off guard and made for a somewhat interesting ending. Only sat through the sequel because I happened to stumble upon the original on Netflix.
