Seinfeld: The Finale (1998)
Season 9, Episode 22
3/10
Completely undercuts the show
4 July 2023
Many of the episodes of the show are about unfortunate things happening to people, often by accident or odd coincidences, and at least as often happening to the four main characters rather than side characters. No one would deny the four are shallow, self-centered, and somewhat narcissistic and neurotic, but so are many of the other characters (both regular and one-time), and not very many of the things that happen are due to actual malice from the four (carelessness, yes). The final episode is based on perhaps the most absurd premise of an absurd show: an idiotic and unworkable Good Samaritan law. The last half of the show was the worst: not even a clip show, but characters returning to tell us things we already knew.

It seems odd to have a summing up show, since the previous double episode was already a clip show, and a disjointed one at that. A very disappointing ending to a disappointing final season to a frequently brilliant show.

One of the worst
31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Except for a decent ending with some good lines by Steed, this is one of the worst Emma Peel episodes. The villains are unpleasant without being at all interesting (especially the two rustics), and the action makes no sense from start to finish. If you are running a criminal operation like Little Storping, you would keep a low profile, rather than calling attention to yourself by pointlessly smashing people's possessions. And what kept them from killing the four dissenters, rather than locking them in a makeshift dungeon? Worst of all, why didn't Mrs. Peel hightail it back to London to get help from Steed as soon as she found Croft dead (or even sooner, after she came to after the fake crash, since she had already seen Forbes dead)? Clearly her car was still working, since she followed the doctor to his surgery.

One of the dullest Bonds
11 August 2022
This is not even close to the best movie released in 1969 with Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas (that would be The Assassination Bureau). Would OHMSS have been better if Oliver Reed had played Bond? Possibly a little, but the story is so dull I doubt it. Considering this keeps to the original book as closely as any Bond movie, the blame lies at Fleming's feet rather than Lazenby's. By the way, don't miss the pulse-pounding scene where Bond breaks into an office, sits around for a while, then makes some photocopies.

Like a hour-long version of Miss Anne Elk
14 July 2022
Not so much funny as ... irritating. The Pythons learned very quickly that a very little bit of this goes a long way. Probably the worst Python-related project: even The Meaning of Life has better material than this. A few of the sketches were reused or reworked for Flying Circus.

Long, slow, and dull
20 November 2021
A few good moments are buried in an endlessly long movie which moves at a snail's pace and spends a lot of time showing absolutely nothing happening. Good performances by the cast, and a realistic story which shows the villains (who only appear at a distance until the very end) for who they really were. But it makes a police procedural like Dragnet look like a James Bond movie by comparison.

Entertaining despite the biggest plot hole of the whole series
15 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of the episode is not as good, but the last half, showing the four remaining Enterprise crewmen trying to overload the Kelvans' emotions is one of the most entertaining episodes. Good performances by Stevens, Bouchet, and Fortier in particular.

But unless Kelvan biology is totally different from any other living organism I've ever heard of, it's a lunatic idea to think that you can run a multigeneration ship on a 300-year voyage with five Kelvans and four humans. How are they going to produce several new generations of Kelvans? Even if the Kelvans can interbreed with the humans, there isn't enough genetic diversity with nine people, and the descendants who reach Andromeda will be biologically inferior, possibly even feebleminded.

Entertaining despite gaping plot holes
14 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Robert Lansing and Teri Garr were very good in their roles, and the episode was entertaining (though somewhat resembling Tomorrow is Yesterday). Apparently snarky computers are going to be part of our future (voice by Barbara Babcock of A Taste of Armageddon).

The central plot, however, makes no sense: if they already knew that the warhead platform was destroyed 104 miles above Earth, what could they need to know so badly it was worth risking going back in time? The most gaping hole is that Scotty had already indicated the Enterprise could destroy the platform with phasers. Kirk should have given him standard orders to do so immediately if anything went wrong.

Depressing and unfunny
15 August 2021
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has dealt with important issues in many past episodes, but never as poorly as this. The worst episode of the whole series: awkward and uncomfortable. The second episode was somewhat better, but it looks like the show is ending at the right time.

The bottom of the barrel
2 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The worst of the "super-alien" episodes of Star Trek, with an insipid plot (beings so evolved they are disembodied brains becoming so dissipated they spend all their time wagering on primitive combat) and wooden dialog (sad to see an actor as fine as Joseph Ruskin in garbage like this).

Nothing good can come from a story where one of the main characters is named Galt

Good start ruined by an unpleasant section
29 September 2020
The premise is an interesting one, and there's nice performance by Kim Darby, but the show goes off the rails when the mob of other children make their first appearance. Michael J. Pollard (already in his late 20's) is wildly miscast as the leader of a gang of obnoxious brats, worse than the ones in And The Children Shall Lead. No explanation is given for how Miri is totally unlike the other children.

Wildly unfunny
29 September 2020
The only character in the entire movie with any charm or interest is the girl played by Tina Majorino. Everyone else is supremely dull and most are unpleasant as well; several of the major characters play as if they are stoned throughout. The only time I laughed (and it was a cringe laugh at that) is when Napoleon draws a picture for a girl he is trying to impress, and she turns over the piece of paper to reveal his drawing of her...

Kirk defeats an evil alien by making kids cry
17 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is the bottom of the barrel. Even Spock's Brain was better than this (it at least had a few moments of unintentional comedy). Even as a kid I loathed this episode.

The kid actors actually did their best with a terrible story and script. The fault is not theirs.

There's also a strange continuity error: when the demon appears for the final time, Kirk addresses it as Gorgon (also sometimes misspelled Gorgan in the script). How did he know its name, since no one had ever mentioned it any earlier in the episode?

Perhaps the most idiotic premise of any Star Trek episode
14 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The entire episode makes no sense. How could an isolated planet gather enough information to build a replica of the Enterprise? And how could it have taken Kirk so long to realize he was on a replica, and not the real thing, when Spock realized it was a non-working replica in about two minutes? And why did no one immediately notice the change in coordinates?

The entire episode exists as a vehicle for Roddenberryesque diatribes against two unrelated themes: bureaucracy and overpopulation. (Also diplomacy, for some reason, even though that plays a substantial part in Federation policy. In A Taste of Armageddon, even though Ambassador Fox is initially treated with derision, his value is clearly shown in the end.)

It is insane to imagine that a civilization that values life would be comfortable unleashing on its population a biological plague for which they almost certainly have no resistance. And their scheme for obtaining the seed of the plague is unimaginably stupid.

The worst of the many Super-Powered Alien episodes. The plot is muddled and the scientific explanations are ludicrous. Robert Brown was decent in the underplayed scenes.

Also, doesn't the Enterprise have an automatic sprinkler system?
