Before researching I did not know this was based on a true story/accounts from Jung, Escobar and Rivas. By the end I was extremely interested in finding out more!
Johnny Depp is exceptional as George Jung, his great chemistry with Jordi Molla and Ray Liotta gives a real feel to how George was more or less an ordinary guy with a great mind for business (even if that business was cocaine and cannabis smuggling).
The acting in this film is fantastic, Depp, Liotta, Molla and Reubens all perform their roles to a t. The feeling that most of these guys were just small time crooks who got big too fast really comes through.
With similarities to Goodfellas (why not if the system works), George's story is well played out, not over the top, and keeps you interested in all the characters involved. Add to that a rocking soundtrack that suits the film perfectly following Jung's continued rock and roll life style throughout the film and you have a very good movie that I would highly recommend.
Just like his performance in Donnie Brasco (which was exceptional), Depp makes the character feel normal, not too likable or unlikable but driven to make money and lots of it.
The Weekly Sutcliffe - Syriana
Loosely based on Robert Baer's 'See No Evil' and taking on a similar storyline style to Ganghan's previous film release 'Traffic' (2000), with multiple storylines occurring alongside each other before linking at the end of the film, Syriana was at times hard to follow though the portrayal of characters helped in easing this as the story developed.
Syriana manages to make a political thriller (usually too long and drawn out with much jargon talk) somewhat interesting and at times exciting. Seeing the viewpoints and effects on each character involved in the story adds depth to the plot and makes the viewer want to find out what happens to each character. The film also shows how none of the characters are perfect and each of their morals and views are tested.
Not shy in dealing with political issues Syriana certainly provokes thought on the impact of decisions made by high executive companies and governments, especially on the people and leaders of those countries. Though the film doesn't mirror my opinions on these subjects it certainly shows the lack of trust and care by people at all levels.
Acting George Clooney won the Academy and Golden Globe awards for best supporting actor for this film and it's easy to see why. His portrayal of the battle worn, frustrated, ageing agent is his best film performance to date. Matt Damon puts in another good showing as the energy analyst who struggles to deal with his son's death and Jeffrey Wright is equally good in portraying a lawyer investigating the oil deal.
My rating My rating for Syriana is 7/10. I really enjoyed the performance of George Clooney and though the plot was at times hard to follow, I was invested in the film and keen to find out what happened with each story. Syriana may not wow you though it will provoke some thoughts on the subject matters in the plot. It will also leave you wanting to know more which I'm not sure is good or bad...
