We Are Who We Are (2020)
I am very split on this show...
I want to start with the technical aspects of it (some people forget to talk about these elements).
This show has great cinematography. The way this show is directed, gives it a dreamlike feel to it. The military base and Italy feels like two different planes.
The use of color, slow-motion and it does have a great soundtrack, that does fit the tone it's going for. I could easily sense the passion that went into every little detail.
If I were to judge this show on the technical side alone, this would be a fantastic show.
But a tv-show is supposed to be carried by the writing and the story. All the main characters are very flawed people, I often like those types, because they are easy to relate to.
But these were really unlikable, and it made it hard to connect with the show.
The writing does get better, my favorite episode is 'part 7'. But by that time most people have already stopped watching. I only watched it till the end because of my love for Luca's previous work.
I decided to give it 6 stars. This is because I did like the technical aspects of it. The story does get better, when you get to know the characters more, and learn why they are the way they are...
Stranger Things (2016)
Overall a great show, but a messy third season
Let me just start by saying, the first two seasons are great, the mystery and horror worked. What new can i say, everything that is great about them, has already been said. The show is worth it, just watch it.
My main problem is the third season ( minor spoilers from here).
The plot is messy. It's trying to much. It wants to be an action comedy, body-cop drama. A horror and mystery show. They should decide which tone they want to use. It wants to try to much.
This results in a show, that tonely feels different.
I can't say anything else, because it's great, the acting, cinematography, production value. The writing gets messy in the later seasons. This season lacks focus, decide which tone and tighten it up. Then the show will get back on track.
And the quality returns.
Black Mirror: San Junipero (2016)
This is Not your Average romance, this is Art.
This is probably, my favorite episode of the entire show.
Everything about this episode is perfect. The direction, the writing, the acting.
I love the production value. It takes you in, it makes you feel like, you're in the 80's and 90's. The score definitely helps, the main score is beautiful, you feel the emotions of these two characters.
This episode would not have been the same, had it been anyone else making this. I can't imagine anyone else playing these characters. Even the side characters are fantastic.
I know this review, was just me rambling. But i can't describe how i feel.
Even though this looks like your average romance, just know, this is much more than that. This is Art.
Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010)
The movie is bad. But it has one major Issue.
Yes. This is a bad movie. It has a lot of problems, directing, acting, writing, visual effects, sound.
However, there is one issue, that is bigger than any of the others: the editing.
When you're making a movie, you want your audience to be engaged.
But, this movie is edited so poorly, and it becomes slow.
The movie has really bad pacing, there are scenes, that is dragged on, some scenes are unnecessary.
The movie could have been better and easier to get through, had it felt faster.
Like any "Neil Breen" film, or "The Room". They're so bizarre and weird. But you're constantly engaged. This is all because of the editing and the pacing.
It (2017)
Missed opportunity
This film has a special spot in my heart.
I was looking forward to this, ever since Cary was attached. Then he left.
And the movie was given to someone else.
I've never had problems with this, because it happens all the time in Hollywood.
But i personally feel like, this movie was to good for Andrés.
The movie feels lost. The tone is all over the place.
The script has all of these special moments. Then they are destroyed by the presentation.
I'm not saying that the script is flawless. It has a lot of flaws, most of them are in the third act (i'm not a big fan of the ending).
Bill is doing his best, but he's not allowed to be creepy, because jumpscares and CGI is surrounding him.
It feels like the movie, has low self esteem. It needs to believe in it self. Because there is a good movie in here, somewhere.
My advice for Andrés: Don't show to much, and let the audience get creeped out, because having too many jumpscares just screams desperate.
