Save Yourselves! (2020)
About an hour too long
This isn't a bad movie. It's a good idea for a short movie, but it becomes thin and annoying very quickly. Low budget, way out sci fi can be great, this wasn't one of those. Not half as funny as it thinks it is, and the ending feels like they simply ran out of ideas (yes I know the ending was some sort of response to other scifi movies having endings where humans win or something).
Alien invasions don't have to be misery porn, but they have to have something that doesn't make you root for the aliens.
If you liked the Dead don't die, then I think you'll like this, if like me you didn't, I doubt you will.
Detectorists (2014)
Might not be for you, but it everything I wanted
I don't do hyperbole, and my reviews are only my own opinion, but this is one of the most truly wonderful programs ever made. Kind, pleasant, sweet but never saccharine. Not fake or pretentious, no belly laughs but a deep sense of joy permeates every minute.
Ordinary people with a non standard hobby being ordinary, with some wonderful things happening.
A wonderful snapshot of the wonderful Britishness, without any flag waving, politics, jingoism or partition.
Perfect example of kind masculinity, fathers being the best ones they can be, while still being flawed and sometimes immature, but also vulnerable and lonely and doing the best they can, without harshness or maliciousness.
It's probably not for you, or for you, or you or you, but it might be for you over there, you guys there and those people at the back and it certainly is for me, a practically perfect program, and one that brings joy to my heart.
Colin from Accounts (2022)
So, this is going to be a weird review
First of all, I would highly recommend you watch this show, especially if your humour is more easily sated by more irreverent comedy. It's not mainstream American in its humour, more Curb than Big Bang, more genuine than You.
It's about two very imperfect but quite nice people who fall in love over a flashed boob and a dog in wheels. And that's about it.
A lot of people will dislike this because of its topics, use of bad language and scenes of drinking, drugs and gambling, but most of them are likely to name their children Berlin (or something like that) or request a husband stitch. But if you willing to crack your heart open for a dog on wheels, then this gem might get in there too.
Wild Mountain Thyme (2020)
Buy the soundtrack, forget the movie!
Watched this movie for 2 reasons, I know the tin whistle player in the movie and John Hamm. All I can say is Des's tin whistle playing is easily the best thing about the movie. The faux Irishness, the constant stereotype that the Irish can't pronounce "th"s, the ideas that a small quiet pub needs to have a someone use a microphone to sing a ballad, the Rolls Royce, the accents, land lines, the utterly bizarre plot twist buried a stupidly pedestrian script, the tiny portions of stew that seems to served for every meal, the drinking of a Guinness at home, the idea that Guinness in a bottle was new and the single most annoying thing, the constant reference of going to Church. Irish people go to Mass, yanks go to church.
This movie is why a certain type of American (you know the type, wear white sneakers, use Google translate to seem more Irish, claim that they are Irish just because their great, great, great grandmother once saw a Shamrock), think Ireland is like and couldn't be arsed to find out.
Christopher Walken accent goes from funny to sad to despressing.
Emily Blunt is just about average (the most damning of faint praise for one of the finest actors in the industry)
Jamie Dornan was about as good as he can be.
It just very bad and not band enough to be good bad, it's just incredibly bland and mildly offensively bad.
The music is very good through and John Hamm being a John Hamm is fun, the rest is just terrible.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Well, it's better than I expected
I'm going to be honest with you, I dislike Zak Synder movies generally (except Watchman, I think he did a decent job there). I didn't know what to expect from this, I like the cast, Tig Nataro - Good - Garret Dillahunt - Good - Dave Batista - Goooood. Love Zombie Movies, but always there was Zak, ready to make me hate this movie. In the end this movie took no risks, always the we'll worn track, it stole from the best and did it worse. It was dull, boring, predictable, never made use of its cast, the effects or the concept. This movie doesn't do anything, it's meh, it's a warm can of Budweiser,it's microwaved pizza from a discount shop, it's boring, it's a Zak Snyder movie, promises everything, delivers somethongs, and what it does deliver was done better by others for a lot less money, welcome to the SynderVerse.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
A lovely Movie
What a lovely and well made movie. This is not as good as any of it predecessors but a lovely add on. If you go in expecting the emotional gut punch of 3, you'll be disappointed, it won't ruin any childhood, that's just ridiculous hyperbole, but it is sweet and lovely addition to the perfect trilogy.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Really very good and has potential to be better
It's excellent, fresh and different. Not perfect, the mycellium drive bugs me a little, but certainly no worse than the first seasons of TNG and DS9.
But I gotta say, increasingly, my favourite thing about Disco is how much the fan boys hate it, how it's popular with a huge raft of star trek fans that don't care about gender politics or wokeness but just want to see people like them on screen, not a bit part but as main characters, but front and centre.
Knives Out (2019)
A Joy of a movie
Wonderful, not perfect but with enough good will, good casting and fun script that any shortcomings can be easily forgiven. I wonder how many of the really bad reviews are because of TLJ and that the the alright dingbats in this movie are not well represented!
Joker (2019)
A 6 star movie with a 10 star lead
Be in no doubt, you are going to see this movie for Joaquin Phoenix, he is superb. The rest of the movie has a grimey beauty but it's padding around Phoenix. De Niro is basically an extended cameo, it steals its best ideas form other movies, but Phoenix, he is sublime!
The Neverending Story (1984)
Best kept as a fond memory
Had great memories of seeing this movie as a child, and wished I left it there but rewatched it a couple of years ago and was very let down. Maybe it was my age, or the fact that the special effects have dated so badly, I'm no sure but this is one for the back of DVD closet, or more likely the charity shop
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
I just not sure
Its entirely possible that I'm too stupid for this movie. I liked it, but I'm not sure why. It's a bit all over the place, Napolean Dynamite meets Shaun of the Dead meets Worlds End. Some very funny moments, great cast, the 4th wall breaking is a little boring. It's a 6 out of 10 for me, but like all film, what you bring to it is often what you get from it!
Judge Dredd (1995)
Perfect Dredd movie, except for all the things
This movie is an almost perfect Dredd movie, except that Stallone was allowed too much too action heroy. I would have loved if this was made with a younger, less superstar Stallone, with a bit better script, no Rob Schneider and Dredd keeping his helmet on, it would have been perfect
Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998)
The only good B5 TV movie
The only good B5 movie and encapsulates all that was good about Babylon5, except the Vorlons.
Shazam! (2019)
Its fine
Not a bad movie, have a lot of time for the cast but suffers from the same issues a lot as the other DC movies. Lack of peril for the main protagonist, average script, predictable story, average acting outside of top billed cast, sterile special effects. A good enough kids movies, better than most DC but one I feel asleep watching and in I'll be in no rush to rewatch.
The Predator (2018)
Very enjoyable
I really liked this, had much of the charm and wit of original. Good action and CGI. It would be easy to dislike it if think the original is a perfect movie, but very enjoyable if you appreciated the fun of the first one.
The Beyond (2017)
Responsible idea poorly executed
Looks nice, terribly written, acting varied from ok to desperate but very poorly cast.
Extinction (2018)
Less than the sum of it's parts
This movies should have been perfect for me but I thought it was poor enough, a great idea but let down by poor direction, writing and pacing. Good acting talent but never reached it's potential
