Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
On a scale of 1 to Alex, how much do you love your mother?
We know, no one's love can match a mother's love for her children. But this film is all about a son's love for his mother. A smart son who creates a world for her ailing mother, and that world is wonderful. Although 'Good Bye Lenin!' has something melancholic in it, still the lovely bonding of protagonist's family and a little touch of his happy romance with a cute girl make this a heartwarming movie.
This film is made against the backdrop of the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, eventually it made many people nostalgic who witnessed those historic moments - the fall of Berlin wall+socialism in Europe, capitalism's triumph in ex-communist countries of Europe and West Germany's win in football world cup.
The bottom line is, this feel-good family movie is a treat to watch!
Contagion (2011)
COVID-19 turns this science fiction into one of he most realistic and essential films ever made.
I am not quite surprised to see that this movie got a rating of 6.7 (April 2020). People who watched it before corona virus outbreak or the people who doesn't have any ideas about pandemic diseases failed to comprehend the importance of this film, and they also could not relate themselves with the film. This movie got so many important things right. I am not denying it added some irrational drama to spice things up a bit, but the film conveys its message successfully. Today(2020) we see people are fighting over toilet tissues, so called civilized humans can't manage to stay civil in a time of crisis. And there are opportunists who are making up conspiracy theories and selling those stories to gullible brain-washed people, eventually people lose faith in their governments; it should be admitted that sometimes governments are guilty of incompetence too. However, in the end, we still can see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, some scientists, doctors, nurses are sacrificing or risking their lives for others; that's humanity at its best. 'Contagion' successfully covers many important aspect of a pandemic disease crisis. This is a fast-paced movies, and many critically acclaimed actors are starred in this movie like Matt Damon,Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard,Jude Law, Bryan Cranston, Gwyneth Paltrow... you know how much Steven Soderbergh love to cast high profile actors in his films; so this film is definitely not boring. This is one of those rare films which are both entertaining and educational. Contagion was released in 2011, but probably it's going to be the most important film of 2020.
Westworld (2016)
Imagine God toying with us like this.
Westworld reminds me of God and his creations from religious texts. Dr. Robert Ford is like a God in Westworld. What do we know about God from religious texts? When God says 'be', it is done. No sentient being can move against his will. He knows everything about us. Robert Ford meeting Theresa Cullen scene is the finest example of that kind of godly control of Ford over Westworld. Every time Robert Ford visits Westworld, he does something as graceful and uncanny as God. Ford meeting William at the bar, Ford exposes Bernard as host in front of Theresa - two of my favorite scenes of the show. What an amazing actor Anthony Hopkins is! Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood,... everyone was stunning in their characters portrayal.
Maeve or Dolores think that they act according to their free will, because they can revolt against their creators, but they are programmed. Hosts of Westworld are like humans on Earth? Maybe we are being watched! Who can tell. Whatever, this Westworld game is surely engaging, and William is someone who makes a fool out of himself by taking this game seriously. When we humans chase success in life, we probably make a William out of ourselves. When we approach death, do we feel cheated by this stupid game on Earth?
Hindi Medium (2017)
Slum dwellers simply don't panic at the sight of mosquitos.
Overall, the movie conveys a positive message, it can make the rich feel sympathy towards the poor. But this movie is overly dramatic and cheesy, like most Indian comedies. But I expected a heart touching story from a real point of view because it starred Irrfan khan.
Despite successfully delivering its good messages, the movie failed to be a good one. There are so many flaws in the story. You can't simply move to a ghetto from an affluent neighborhood to get your kid admitted to a fine school by using underprivileged quota. And at the same time, longing for aristocracy. And slum dwellers are depicted as gullible fools, kind hearted though. I am disgusted at their overreaction when they see a mosquito. They live in a slum, but they are overwhelmed at the sight of a mosquito! The film story was written by some rich guy without proper background knowledge about poverty stricken slum-dwellers. To say the least, the story is not nicely put.
Mother! (2017)
Darren Aronofsky messing with people's mind
Darren Aronofsky's movies always steam up people's brain. Mother! is another one does the same. This is a sickly and beautifully made film. I had a funny feeling while I was watching the movie, when Jennifer Lawrence sees that people are coming from all over to her house, I was thinking that Donald trump watching Mexicans are coming to United States of America.
Joking apart, I didn't give too much thought to get the meaning of the movie. it feels like the poet is some sort of creator who loves appreciation from his admirers. 'Admirer' is not an appropriate word to describe this, 'worshiper' is well suited. He loves praise and appreciation more than anything in the world, even more than his own child and wife. His worshipers kills his only infant son, he still tries to find a way to forgive them. But the mother of the baby can't. What does this mean? Mother loves more than anyone? she cares more than God about her children? I don't know the movie means that or not.
Casting is brilliant. Javier Bardem plays cold character very well. Jennifer Lawrence is the catch of the movie, another oscar worthy performance has been provided by this brilliant actress. Ed harris always plays sick/ meyterious people's role beautifully, I can recollect his performance in the movie 'The hours', he was really good in playing a suicidal sick man. He started the influx of people to the house of the poet. Perfect man to start messing up an organized condition.
