Sufferin' Cats! (1943)
Good Fun.
Sufferin' Cats and The Bowling alley cat in my opinion are the best early Tom and Jerry shorts. This one got really good laughs.
The Story is about Tom chasing Jerry, then an Alley Cat appears (His name is Meathead), and then they start to fight each other in order to get Jerry.
The Story might sound too simple, but the excellent animation, perfectly timed gags really help. And this episode is a musical fun! I couldn't stop humming to the song, it's really Jazzy and Catchy, it accomplishes the action on the cartoon, it's flawless.
The Highlights of the cartoon are when Tom and Meathead decide to cut Jerry in a half to have equal parts to each other, but Tom's evil thought make him steal Jerry by a whole.
All of these elements help this cartoon stand out.
I Recommend it to every Tom and Jerry fan.
That's My Mommy (1955)
Heartwarming Cartoon.
Just leaving a quick comment before reviewing the cartoon, It really bothers me when people give credits for Fred Quimby being the greatest man involved in these cartoons, when it was clear that it wasn't, all he did was steal credits from William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, in the Oscar ceremonies, he got the statues for himself and didn't even call them once for the ceremonies. This was the first cartoon that Hanna-Barbera did without Fred Quimby in charge, and you can see it, the cartoons got more experimental. Such as the unpopular "Blue Cat Blues", Tom and Jerry teaming up a lot in these cartoons, and other things.
Moving to the Review, anyway, this cartoon got some really good sight gags, does a excellent use of the CinemaScope technology (A Thing that I wish that it was still on theaters today), the Music never disappoints, and the animation is really good, as always.
The Story is that Little Quacker's Egg hatched under Tom, making him believe that Tom is his mother, and give him all the love, Tom doesn't correspond well, seeing him as meal instead, Jerry sees this, hilarity ensues.
This cartoon got a really heartwarming ending and brought a tear to my eye in the end. It's really nice seeing Tom have a change of heart.
I Recommend it to everyone that calls himself or herself as a Tom and Jerry fan.
The Bowling Alley-Cat (1942)
One of the Best Realistic Animals Tom and Jerry era.
I Consider the Realistic Animals Tom and Jerry era to start at Puss Gets the Boot and end in Sufferin' Cats.
The Story is that Jerry is having some fun at the Bowling Alley, when Tom appears and wants to eat him, leading some fun and inventive gags, that didn't take place inside a House.
This is Tom and Jerry first cartoon to take place outside a house. And for me, it's for the best, it allowed some new gags, that weren't seen in the earlier episodes, such as Jerry using a bowling pin as a baseball bat, Or Tom trying to catch a bowling ball like a baseball ball and gets smashed by it. Another Highlight was Jerry teleporting himself to other Bowling Ball inside another far away bowling ball.
I recommend it to every Tom and Jerry fan.
Fine Feathered Friend (1942)
Some nice fun, but sometimes Slow on the pace.
Again, this is another episode that I wish I could rate it a 7 and a half. This is another episode that takes place outside a house in the early Tom and Jerry shorts, I think it could have take advantage with it's setting ( A farm), but it doesn't really pay off.
The Story is that inside a barnyard, Jerry befriends a chicken, that act like a bodyguard, by thinking that Jerry is a chick, with this, Tom becomes the punch bag of the chicken.
There are some really good jokes, such as the chick screaming "MAMA!", I couldn't stop laughing at that. But, such as early Tom and Jerry episodes, it's slow on the pace, and there is sometimes much more personalization than action.
And such as early episodes of The cat and mouse duo, there is much more cuteness on it. The chicks and Jerry really add a adorableness level on it.
I Recommend to you take a look at it if you don't have nothing else to do.
Puss n' Toots (1942)
Adorable Cartoon.
I wish I could rate it 7 and half, anyways, this cartoon is introducing us to the Tom and Jerry that we know. Scenes such as Tom turning into a wolf, or a Cupid hitting an arrow on Tom. But as a lot of people said around here, it's more cute than hilarious, my friend (that is a girl), reacted with "Ownnt", "It's so cute!", "I Wanna hug them", and the list goes on. So I think that this episode females will like it more than males.
The Story is that someone brought a female cat(Her name is Toots, by the way) to Mammy take care of her for some time. Tom sees Toots and fall in love with her, so he does a lot of tricks to impress Toots, using Jerry, of course. Jerry doesn't like it, and the fight starts.
But a thing is, the fight between them starts only at the half of the cartoon. And to be honest, it isn't that much, it's only Jerry throwing some discs at Tom and that's it. But the adorable scenes, such as Tom doing magic tricks to Toots can be a little fun to see, you don't get a chuckle, but a smile appears on your face.
I recommend you to give it a watch, specially if you are a female.
Dog Trouble (1942)
Introducing Spike, and first time that T & J team up.
This cartoon gave the audience the introduction of Spike. You can see that Spike in this early cartoon was much more vicious and attacked everyone for no reason, when Tyke entered in, his personality started to soft.
The Story is that Tom and Jerry are doing what they do best: chasing each other. That is, until Spike enters the scene, and he starts to chase both Tom and Jerry, making them team up against the bulldog.
This cartoon sometimes is low on gags, and sometimes make you wish that you were watching the late 40's and 50's Tom and Jerry. But I know that this cartoon still have a important value to the history of cartoons.
And this cartoon have a nice thing : they team up for the first time on the series. And in the end, Tom and Jerry return to their normal chase.
Yeah, I recommend it to every Tom and Jerry fan, even a little bit more than Fraidy Cat.
Fraidy Cat (1942)
Yeah, nice cartoon, but Slow.
It's from this cartoon onwards that Tom and Jerry would start to get that crazy pace that we are used to. This one have some funny moments and some unnecessary.
The Story is that Tom is hearing some scary stories on the radio, and he gets really frightened of it, Jerry, takes this to his advantage, to get rid of Tom.
There are some funny moments, such as the 9 lives being sucked out of him, or Tom attacking Mammy.
But The unnecessary ones are REALLY unnecessary, take as a example a scene of Jerry messing on a vacuum cleaner, making Tom think that it's
a ghost, when Tom realizes the truth, Jerry is turning the switch on and off. Then he laughs. He Looks at Tom. He plays with the vacuum switch again. Then he points at somewhere. He start laughing again. Then he starts playing with the vacuum switch again. Then he start laughing one more time. Then he start switching on and off again. Then he start to slow down and realizes that he just saw Tom. Then he goes a little bit to the front to see if Tom was really there. Then he gulps. Then he looks at the Audience.
I Think you get where I am going.
Rather Slow, if you don't have nothing else to do, I recommend you to give it a try.
The Tom and Jerry Show (2011)
It's Not that bad as a lot of people thinks.
OK, surely the MGM Tom and Jerry Cartoons can be better than this adaptation, but I think this is a cool show! To be honest, I Think this one is better than all of the previous Tom and Jerry for television adaptations.
It's Supperior than Tom and Jerry tales in one important aspect : The Slapstick. It's far more better, Tom now chases Jerry with an axe, a thing that, I believe, would be impossible too see in Tom and Jerry tales, that had the violence toned down.
And talk about a great music! It gets that "Scott Bradley" vibe, it fits the action, and it also got that Jazzy feeling that were present in the originals.
And if you think that the story can be predictable, Tom wins in the first episode, like, right in the first episode. And there are times that they both lose, and there are times that Jerry Wins. You get curious at what is going to happen. And the setup is nice too! We got Tom and Jerry as detectives for the first time, this idea was never used in other adaptations AND the originals.
Yeah, Yeah, everyone criticizes the Animation, and I can kind of understand why, but it's something new, you guys should give it a chance, it's most of the time well drawn and got the expressions right! And the characters have that "solid" feeling, they don't stretch a lot, and they also don't get too quiet, just like the Originals.
My only complaint is that they got Toots'(The female cat that appeared in "Puss N' Toots " and "The Mouse comes to Dinner") name wrong, in a episode she's called Toodles, and Toodles is that white female cat that appeared in "Springtime for Thomas" and "Casanova Cat".
But other than that, it's a funny show and you guys should take a time to watch it, but not trying to find something wrong in it. You'll see that it's a nice show!
For A Tom and Jerry fan, it's a must watch!
The Night Before Christmas (1941)
So Cute!
The Night Before Christmas may not be the funniest, but it's really adorable. Some Gags really work, and the ending brought a tear to my eye.
The Story?
It's Night Christmas Eve on Mammy's House, Jerry starts to have a little walk around the house, playing with the Gifts under the Christmas Tree. Unknown to him, Tom was taking a nap, then he accidentally wake up Tom. And then the chase starts. Eventually Tom manages to throw him out of the house. But after a heavy snowstorm begins, Tom rescues Jerry and tries to wake him up, then they both enjoy the fireplace together.
Talk about a cute short, every moment on it it's perfectly animated, the bright colors help a lot. The ending is so beautiful that it evens bring a tear to my eye.
Everyone that calls himself as a Tom and Jerry fan Should watch it!
The Midnight Snack (1941)
Starring Tom and Jerry!
For a second episode, this is certainly a improvement over the first one (Puss Gets the Boot), but it doesn't have laugh-out loud moments in this one, but there are moments that raise a smile in my face, such as Mammy-Two-Shoes pulling several layers on her dress or Tom blaming Jerry.
The Story?
At Midnight, Jerry starts to steal the Fridge food, but only to be followed by Tom, who stops Jerry. But, Tom decides to steal the fridge too, but he accidentally broke some dishes after throwing a cheese. Mammy-Two-Shoes comes down to see what happened, so Tom blames Jerry as the responsible, and start to chase him, in the end Jerry manages to push Tom against the fridge, breaking everything inside it, so Mammy throws him out of the house.
That Technicolor food looks really convincing to me, and makes me want to eat it! Like all early Tom and Jery cartoons, it have a beautiful animation and backgrounds.
I Recommend it! Give it a watch if you have free time.
Puss Gets the Boot (1940)
Starring...Jasper and Jinx?
Don't get me wrong, even that "Puss gets the boot" can be funny sometimes, for a first short starring the duo, it's kind of weak.
This short was originally planed to be a one-shot short, but it's success created the franchise that we all know and love.
What's the Story?
Tom, In this short named Jasper, is playing with his pray, that is Jerry, in this short named Jinx. The chase goes on until Jasper accidentally breaks a vase, so the house's owner, Mammy-Two-Shoes, warns that if Jasper breaks something again, he'll be kicked out of the house; Jinx, that heard this, start to throw everything fragile against the floor. Jasper do his best to prevent this, but in the end Jinx win.
You can see clearly that this is the first episode, not only due the names, but Tom and Jerry, specially Tom, looked and acted more like real life animals, when Tom gets hurt, he makes Cats sounds, the only thing that comes up in my mind is a real life cat getting hurt, who would enjoy that?
But overall, yeah, nice episode, Jerry is adorable in this episode, a must see to every Tom and Jerry fan.
