Y'all ain't giving this a fair chance
19 February 2022
Yeah it's not funny, but it wasn't supposed to be. It's a dramatic retelling of original show, and honestly it's doing a good job. I was weary about it, since it seemed like everything was getting a "dark and grittier" reboot, but this show does it well. It's fairly faithful to the original and has the same base story, but shows those same situations in a more realistic/emotional light rather than in a sitcom way. And the actors are great also, they make sure you feel the tension in their lines. There is clearly a lot of effort and heart put into the show, from capturing Philly culture to making the show modern without it being hacky. Thie isn't another project trying to cash in on the shock value of making a formely family project dark, it's a honestly moving drama. Give it a fair shot instead of just dismissing it because it isn't a comedy.

Yuck

Blatant South Park ripoff, right down to the music. You can tell they're trying to be edgy but not really offend at the same time, which makes for a confusing watch. The characters also yell all of their lines, guess that's supposed to substitute for an actual joke. The only thing impressive about this show is that it manages to be crazy and boring at the same time. 0 stars.

Great Show

A lot of the rappers are talented and bring something at least a little different to the table. There's a little bit of everything in this show, from funny to emotional to dramatic moments. They need to make Snoop a regular though.

Very Uneven
14 November 2019
The tone of the show is very uneven. It switches between comedy and drama in a jarring manner, and many of the sets look cheap. I was looking forward to a show about black women in a positive light, but it seems that the women in this show based their lives around men and not themselves. Hopefully it will improve in time, but so far, I'm not impressed.

Interesting Premise
23 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is pretty creative with some great jokes and moments sprinkled throughout. The Q reboot was definitely the best. Plus the second half was strong, and the digs at the streaming/TV audiences were pretty clever.

They gotta stop over explaining some of the jokes though. It kills a lot of the jokes on arrival. It happened mostly during the Lois sketch, but the rest of the episode was pretty good.

Felt like mid-2000s South Park. Lots of laughs in this episode and the satire of censorship in China was done well.

Confused but Enjoyable
30 June 2019
Euphoria is a show with a lot going on. It seems to be a commentary and inner look of the drug and sex culture of teens, but walks the fine line between glamorization and exploration. The plots are interesting, but the storytelling is a bit muddy. They seem to jump scenes with little to no explanation or transitions. The characters are somewhat relatable to me (although I didn't experience their issues and culture until college), and there's some moving and gripping scenes that will have you on edge. Plus, subtle dark humor is carefully woven into the show and narration, and it adds a few comedic elements without taking away from the intensity. If they fix the storytelling, I could really see this show taking off. Some say this show is too graphic, but then celebrate Game of Thrones? That doesn't make sense in my eyes. As soon as I saw the title and the network, I knew I was in for something explicit. Euphoria takes you on a journey, and even with the show's flaws, it's worth it.

A Fun Show

This is pretty much wheel of fortune with trivia questions instead of puzzles, but it's still pretty entertaining.

Missed Opportunity
6 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I will say that I enjoyed this film when it first came out back in 2016, but in 2019, this film just doesn't do it anymore.

This is intended to be an R-Rated parody of Pixar and Disney films, but is kinda empty and doesn't do enough with the premise.

The first and last 20 minutes of this film are entertaining, but the rest leaves a lot to be desired. After the food gets split up from the market, they pretty much give up on jokes and just rely on swearing and sexual comments. There's nothing wrong with being vulgar, but if you don't have good jokes to back it up, it lacks a punch. This film isn't completely witless, and there are some clever moments, but there was a lot of missed chances.

And the religious satire is pretty much the same thing we've seen on other adult comedies like Family Guy and South Park. The theme is pretty much that religion causes unnecessary division and doesn't allow us to explore ourselves. However, the delivery was not particularly original.

I would be lying if I said this film didn't deliver any laughs. However, an R-Rated reimagining of Disney films should be more exciting, funny, and creative. It feels like the creators had a few good ideas, but didn't add on to them and ran out of steam.

Flawed Film, but entertaining
6 June 2019
This wasn't a great movie, but I appreciate that it mixed sci-fi with high profile black issues such as police brutality. The characters made some dumb decisions, but were ultimately endearing and understandable. In my eyes, they acted like how teenagers would if they were suddenly put into a situation where they could either save or hurt lives with almost no in-between. The ending, however, did leave me upset rather than intrigued, and the tone was inconsistent. As another reviewer mentioned, it had the feel and look of a Disney film but contained very strong language. However, I am not opposed to watching it again, and it was an entertaining ride.

Yes we get it
14 May 2019
Yeah, this was supposed to subvert Sports Movie cliches, yeah it was a parody of the "loser-turned-winner" attitude in those Hollywood movies, we get it. The problem is this episode was just not that funny, simple as that. Reversing a cliche isn't inherently funny, you have to do something interesting and witty with it. There were no strong jokes and this episode felt like an over-the-top soap opera honestly.

Decent Season Finale
13 May 2019
This episode had a good plot but the jokes were very mediocre (usually it's the other way around). In particular, the scene with the celebrity pictures seemed extremely uninspired, and the characters sounded bored throughout the whole thing. The tribute to Adam West was touching, and Brian and Quagmire had some nice scenes. Overall, kinda underwhelming for a season finale.

Underrated Show
8 May 2019
This show followed the life of football player Darwin Davis as he tried to balance his relationship with Melanie and his career. It was one of the funniest sitcoms I ever saw, with clever and witty lines almost every second, and actually justified the use of the laugh track. The show became more dramatic in the second and third seasons, but it felt authentic and there were still plenty of hilarious moments to balance it out. In 2009, CW cancelled the show in order to make room for more teen dramas, a very disappointing move. Everybody Hates Chris was booted off too, leading some people to believe they were "whitewashing" the network, myself included. However, in late 2010, BET, who had already reran the show for about two years, revived the show. It seemed like a dream come true until...

We got a completely different show. New locations, a new filming style, the phasing out of the laugh track, more melodrama, and the characters seemed to have a vicious bent to them. Ironically, Tasha, formerly the fiercest character on the show, became more dependent and less strong willed.

I will admit, I was bummed out by the shift from comedy-drama to full-on drama, but with stronger storylines and keeping the characters true to themselves, BET could've pulled it off. Instead, we got a soap opera filled with played out stereotypes. Formerly, the characters tried to make the best out of dodgy situations. In the newer ones, they seemed as if they wanted to make a living hell for each other. T.T was the only character that remained (mostly) consistent. When Melanie left the show, it was the final straw. However, the humor and occasionally moving storylines from the first three seasons cannot be denied, hence the 8/10 rating.

Hilarious Episode
6 May 2019
There wasn't anything too extraordinary or special about this episode but it was funny from beginning to end, with Meg going to the extremes for Internet game and Brian with his Hummer. Peter's Instagram adventures was a great moments too. And Lois ranting at the end was nice twist on "everything's back to normal", and I'm glad they stopped doing those meta jokes about about not having a proper ending. There's some gross out moments but it works within the context. Overall, a fun episode.

Could've been a powerful film, but was too "Hollywood" and one-sided
15 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this movie when I was younger, but today I could careless for it. It covers no new ground, and tries to uphold the cast as heroes without a strong case. I still enjoy some of their music, but other than the infamous police song and some of Cube's solo work, their music did not uplift the black community or make the world more aware of sociopolitical issues. The movie alludes to that and tries to tell us this, but we see more of the cast trying to act cool than them fighting for a cause, making it unconvincing in my eyes (Although my younger self was fooled). Let's all be honest, no one listens to N.W.A to "be informed". Their anger, aggression, and bluntnesss sells the music, and the consciousness is an afterthought (this doesn't mean it's wrong to enjoy them though). This isn't a morality crusade, but simply acknowledging a problem doesn't make you heroic, you have to take initiative to fix it.

A lot of people say this movie is raw and gritty because of the swearing, violent imagery, and groupie sex scenes. However, that is more glamor than grit, and despite all the parental advisories about this film (Police at theaters making sure no one under 17 gets in, and FX plays about four different warnings before this film airs), it's very sugar coated and PG compared to the real story of N.W.A. Entire beefs were skipped, and details that made Cube and Dre look like jerks were skipped over too. I'd like to compare this to The New Edition Story. Although that was a PG-13 film, the cast put pretty much every thing on the table, even the details that made them look selfish or foolish, and showed that they did their fair share of dirt, even during their bubblegum pop days, making it feel more raw than this film. Here, we only see these sides of the characters if it makes them look more badass, making the whole experience feel contrived.

And we all know that Eazy-E did not cry during the release of The Chronic. His popularity waned a bit from N.W.A's heyday, but he was still releasing music and signing new groups and artists. In fact, he received a portion of The Chronic's income. I did not appreciate the fact that they made him look weak and cowardly in the second half of the film. They made it look like he was nothing without N.W.A, but he fared well as a solo artist and would've further expanded his brand if it wasn't for his unfortunate death.

N.W.A's story is vast and includes many characters and artists who followed their influence, so I could see why certain details and people were not included. But when the final product ends up as a sanitized story that boosts up two people and downplays everything else, it makes a very one-sided and dissatisfying film. And although the finale scene was meant to be a declaration of Dre's independence, it came off as very cheesy and overly "Hollywood". The way Suge and Dre talked in that scene sounded like something out of a Marvel movie, and was wholly unbelievable. There is some good acting, a few powerful scenes, and little doses of humor throughout the film, but these cannot make up for the story

Edit: The most helpful review on the site claims that the only reason someone could dislike this movie is because it dared to show "angry black men". Considering how watered down this film was, they weren't angry enough.

Great Orginal Episode
15 April 2019
This was a refreshing and original episode, and I was surprised to see so much hate for it. The commentary starts off a bit boring, but the episode quickly picks up into surreal and hilarious territory. I'm into DVD commentary, so I appreciated this episode a lot. Although Family Guy has became meta to a fault recently, this episode plays with it like no other animated comedy has (except Drawn Together, but it was a quick gag in the movie rather than an episode). I recommend watching this with captions to pick up on all the jokes and not be confused about who to listen to and who's talking.

Best episode of the series
10 February 2019
This show is hit or miss but this episode in particular was spectacular. It showed a side of gang culture that is rarely seen on TV, exposed some racial bias in marketing, and overall displayed an air of positivity and hope in spite of obstacles. It also had some humorous moments throughout, and if you wanna get someone hooked on this show, you should probably show this episode first. Informative, educational, and funny.

A decent trip
28 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The show is humorous at times and the kids are funny, but the story is a little flimsy. If this is a family band, how come they didn't catch heat over the radio interview? And they rely on cussing/sex jokes a little too much. Never thought I'd see the day where George Constanta curses more than Eric Cartman. Hopefully they fix it over time.

Family Guy (1999– )
Great Show, Long Legacy, But Losing Steam
7 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Family Guy is a long running animated program that has had an huge impact on pop culture. The show brought a nice mix of sitcom tropes, black comedy, "low-brow" humor, intelligent jokes, and gags. I've been watching since 2007, "Stewie Kills Lois" was my first episode, and I've been hooked ever since. However, the show has been running out of steam.

I wasn't even around for the original run, but I think pre-cancellation episodes are superior to what we have now. They milked every opportunity for a joke they could. Nowadays, they just make lame observations or overdone celebrity comparisons, even when the plot screams absurdity. "Saturated Fat Guy" for example, had so many chances to play off of Peter's unhealthy habits, but it just fell flat. The scene where Peter thought about how successful his junk food business could be could've been home to some funny visuals, like him living in a mansion made of junk food, and diving in a pool of soda or beer. Instead, we got some line about a celebrity being sad on a ride. The jokes used to be clever, but recently, they over-explain them or give away the punchline in the delivery, which kills the momentum.

Also, since Season 4, they've had scenes where the characters just stand around and talk about nothing for minutes on end. I think they're going for a "Seinfeld Conversation" kind of thing but it doesn't mesh well with the show's fast paced style.

The show's use of black comedy has also downgraded. They're no punchline or point to the dark events on the show, they just happen and we're supposed to laugh. Just like a joke about a lamp can be lame, a joke about a dead baby can too. The pilot episode, for example, had a great joke about Hitler being jealous of a Jew at the gym. And for 1/3 of the show's run, Stewie would stop at nothing to kill his mother Lois, which was a goldmine of dark comedy. Nowadays, they do things like having Peter brutally slaying a whale for no good reason and blowing up children's hospitals just because. I will say the violence in the recent Quentin Tatrintino episode was great because it was a nice parody of his style. Also, they just list racial stereotypes now instead of playing with them like they use to.

The show is still pretty good, but ironically, they lost their edge while trying to be edgier. The recent season seems to be getting back on the right track, especially with the story arcs and "experiment" episodes. Here's to many great FG episodes to come.
