Freddy (2022)
Fantastic Kartik !
Kartik Aaryan gives a great performance that takes this thriller a few notches up than what it otherwise would have been. He is very believable as Dr Freddy - a shy, low on confidence bachelor looking for his soulmate. Alaya F as Kainaaz complements him well. The movie starts slowly, though never drags. And once it picks up pace around half-time, it does not slow down at all. The other supporting cast does the job well too. The direction and screenplay are top notch.
The director does leave a few loose ends and the movie could have ended better. But it is a thriller that will hold viewers till the very end, have no doubts about it.
The Terminal List (2022)
Super entertainer
An absolute entertainer! The last episode is a bit of a stretch (hence a 7 from me), but the entire series will keep one hooked till the very end. Chris Pratt is very believable as the Navy Seal officer struggling with his own memory overlaps, while trying to get justice for his Seals platoon. Supporting cast does not have much to do, but do their job admirably. Wu & Tripplehorn fit their roles nicely. Kitsch and Rushing could have been used better.
Definitely recommended if you like action.
Django Unchained (2012)
Great movie with a perfunctory end
A fantastic script, great acting and a stamp of authority of a great director are the highlights of this wonderful Western. One can sense the magic of Tarantino throughout the movie. Waltz, Foxx and Jackson are brilliant. DiCaprio is a little over the top, but isn't jarring.
Despite the long running time, the movie is captivating and holds attention throughout, but the ending was a little disappointing. Very predictable, super-humanish end spoils it a little.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Misleading ratings here.
Horrible movie. One wonders if this is genuinely a Tarantino film. A wafer-thin plot full of ludicrous sub-plots that stretches for almost 150 minutes. Poor characters, some of them including Pitt are way over the top. The only reason why I give this 2 stars is for Christoph Waltz, whose Col. Landa is the only believable character in the movie.
Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side (2020)
Excellent overall, but for the last episode
Asur is a wonderful concept, something that hasn't been hitherto seen in India. The story is taut and doesn't drag even for a moment, despite some holes in the plot. Great direction, as it build up the tempo nicely throughout the series.
I feel the last episode could have been better. That is where is just slips a little and it feels as if the director wasn't sure on how to end it. But it is a very good attempt and hope to see more from this team.
Shikara (2020)
Misleading marketing
The movie was promoted using the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir. The early posters of the movie claimed this as well. Apparently, the movie is a love story and there is no reference to the genocide. An emotional issue had been misused for promoting a movie. This itself is a reason to stay away from it !
Dark Wind (2017)
Excellent portrayal of the situation
This is a Sanjay Mishra movie all the way, though Ranvir Shorey too plays his part well. Worried for his son, the father (Mishra) goes to any extent to ensure his son's safety and even collaborates with the ruthless debt recovery agent (Shorey) by sharing some vital information, on the condition that the recovery agent would not harass his son. The stark reality of the drought, the gloom all around due to lack of rains and the utter helplessness in he village due to this has been beautifully portrayed. The cinematography and art direction are of extremely high value and paints this gloomy scenario very beautifully.
Sanjay Mishra as a blind, old father worried for his son's life is so real that it is hard to imagine anyone else playing this role. The direction is powerful and keeps you bound to the movie, though it gets a little slow at times. That probably is the only reason why this is not a a 10-star movie for me.
