Masaki Kobayashi's epistemological study of the Samurais' life
can't be really meshed with Kurasawa's affirmative depiction. He
literally hated how the latter portrayed the Tokugawa period by
having such an immense sense of pride in Samurais. Kobayashi
thought of them as thugs who tyrannized innocent people, and
this was the main theme his whole filmography centered around.
Kobayashi is one of my favorite directors of all time, I loved all the movies I watched by him, but his timeless beauty "Hari-kiri" was and always will be my favorite movie by him, and probably the greatest Japanese movie ever..
