The most pointless show of all time.
28 November 2023
My husband forces me to watch this. The ham handed ridiculous storylines are neither scary, nor thrilling. They aren't sad or touching or funny or based on any actually reality. Just far-fetched and circus like entertainment. I guess it's the same people who think Yellowstone is brilliant writing who love this series as well. There's just no accounting for people's taste. I'm sad that my opinion is in the minority in this crazy world. Or maybe it's a badge of honor at this particular point in history.

If you like nonsensical storylines, irredeemable characters, and lots of gratuitous violence, then this just might be the show for you. Enjoy.

I tried!
17 December 2022
To be fair-- I only got through the first 2 episodes. First of all, this is not a "documentary " this is boring reality tv. It started fairly interesting hearing them talk about their upbringing and how they met. One thing that struck me was when Harry described how they fell in love, he seemed really sincere- yet when Meghan told her side, it seems she "bagged a prince" and was insincere in her telling of how she fell in love. It felt like she became his ideal woman- and won his affections. After that part, it goes downhill fast for me. So boring. I couldn't understand why this was made and why we would need 6 episodes? There's so many sad or interesting or amazing stories out there. I can't believe Netflix would pay for this content. The dramatic and emotional piano music throughout felt very manipulative. Like, without the music, there would be no emotions evoked whatsoever, I didn't hate it, honestly, it was too boring to hate. I just shut it off.

IEhat 100M documentary looks loke
10 December 2022
I had to see what all the controversy and fuss was about. From the opening scene and all throughout , there is this moody background music, promising some dark realities to be revealed, or to create sad emotion during a scene. It felt manipulative, trying to create drama or sad emotions, where there was none. Instead all we got were very basic general stories, like someone might tell over a dinner " I went to England and realized they aren't huggers". Or, "I bowed so low before the Queen, I nearly fell on my face" described like slapstick/ mocking. Everything else was a collection broad references to other people (or comparing Meghan to princess Di, for sympathy) . Harry at one point said something like "people will say anything to make a buck" without a hint of irony or self-awareness . Ha! Empty meaningless proclamations were sprinkled throughout "We have to overcome this" "They would never be pleased" . 100M Netflix? You raised my subscription to pay for this? I'd say it was awful and bad. But the reality is that it is so empty and meaningless and boring-- it doesn't rise to the level of being bad enough to hate. Avoid.

Ugh--
18 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For the record, I can't stand this show, or any of the characters in it. I am waiting for the day someone just drops a big ol'bomb on the lot of them so I will be spared the ridiculously unrealistic dialogue, plot, and one dimensional characters. Beth looks the right age to be John's wife- not daughter. And the way they brand, abuse, and even murder people is disturbing and stupid, all at the same time. The women are all hard as nails, promiscuous, miserable, or a combination of all 3 (Beth). Such a scenic backdrop and a few decent actors, but all that is thrown to the wind in favor of complete nonsense. I don't get the love for the show, until I remember that this is the same nation that made 2 and a half men a hit tv show for years. My husband makes us watch. I keep playing along thinking it will get cancelled- but it keeps getting renewed. Argh!!!!

Touching, and powerful 9 minutes.
6 November 2022
That was unexpected. This is a story of a stray kitten and an abused pitbull, each trying to survive in a hard world. They captured the animals' body language perfectly. I cried for all the poor dogs and cats that are abused, and neglected. Volunteering at a shelter, I see all the sad pitbulls and what they have been through, but they are still the sweetest most loving dogs. I wasn't expecting it to be powerful in such a short time. I highly recommend it especially if you want to teach your children sensitivity to what animals go through and how we can all do better at trying to stop abuse. This is a great short story.

Delightful and devastating
10 April 2022
It's been a decade since I first watched all the series of this show. I learned so much about these adorable and resilient intelligent little creatures. My utmost respect to their social order and survival techniques. While I can't recount each season, I can tell you that I have never been so emotionally devastated watching any animal documentary before. Getting to know these meerkat clans, their babies, their losses... It was almost too much. There were times I found myself screaming at the production crew to intervene and help the poor creature. Like when a pup was separated from the pack, and couldn't find its way back, left to die helplessly in the desert. I know many claim people should not intervene on nature, yet we applaud such human interventions to save animals all the time. There are thousands of examples of animal rescues from around the world, where good people step in to help a wild animal in harms way. Why is this not the case when it's a "documentary". We rejoice when everyone pitches in to push a grounded whale back out into the safe depth of water. Why not sit back and watch the whale languish and die as to not intervene on nature? Because we know it is wrong to not help we we can. There were many situations where production could have easily saved these meerkats, but instead filmed their deaths for dramatic tragic storylines (under the guise of not interfering). That's why I removed 3 stars. Otherwise, this is a wonderful series that highlights how incredible meerkats are.

Awful try-hard- "we are so clever" rubbish.
30 January 2022
I can only attribute the high average rating to a bunch of Wes Anderson art house "fan boys". But hey, if you enjoy pointless "clever" randomness whose sum total equals - nothing, then this is the show for you! You can brag to friends who hated it that they just "don't get it."

7 for Zeytin
3 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I loved seeing zeytin live on her own terms, but I am mad at production for exploiting certain situations. The crew knew the Syrian kids stole the puppy and instead of helping her reunite with construction-caretaker, they filmed it knowing full well the puppy would have a better life with her family and caretakers. Also when Zeytin was attacked, did they seek medical care for her like Turks there regularly do? If not, that is not fair to Zeytin. Finally, the whole name of the film is incorrect. Zeytin and her friends are not stray. Turkey recognizes a dog and cats' right to live and exist without an owner, unlike here in the US where we feel more civilized because we euthanize millions of healthy animals every year, or force them to be locked in shelters/in a cage, sometimes for years. Again I have a lot of issues with this film but Zeytin is a star.

Very touching story about a special man
27 May 2021
This is the kind of movie the elite will hate...family values, faith based story of the human spirit and hard work leading to dreams being fulfilled. It's not cool or edgy. It's just an incredible true story about a really good and special person. The world needs a lot more like him. I am a woman and I'm not a football fan, but I loved every moment.

Ignore the accent/casting reviews
23 April 2021
I'm not French, Dutch or from Belgium - so I could care less about the accuracy of their accents. As someone who is obsessed with true crime documentaries, I was not familiar with this case at all. I am fascinated and completely gripped by the story. I would ignore all those other comments irrelevant to the entertainment factor. This is a very cleverly written and executed mini series. Of course I immediately researched the actual crimes and The Serpent/Bikini killer and it was surprisingly accurate. If you like true crime genre- this is a must.

Authentic and powerful
21 March 2021
I watched this movie, not not knowing a thing about the storyline. Wow, it gripped me throughout. Raw, and emotional. The acting was off the chart. The story felt so real-I didn't find out it was a true story until the end. I highly recommend it!'

Great before after show- wrapped up on 30 mins.
21 December 2020
I find Tarek to be likable, Christina, not so much. I like that they show efficient flipping.

  • Find run down house in decent market.
  • Hire contractors to do all the work.
-Make unlivable house, beautiful.

Don't get all the hate in these reviews, for a 30 min Reno show.

Worse yet- who makes it into a movie? Worst of all- who wastes time in their lives they can never get back by watching this movie? :( Save yourselves! Learn from my mistake.

And the award goes to- the octopus! Edit:changed rating
16 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love nature documentaries and this was no exception. It was a beautifully shot and informative documentary. I found Foster to be pretty self indulgent and trying to draw a metaphor for everything in his own life against the natural world of the octopus. It really was a one sided friendship where the octopus took a chance and let this man into her world. Foster was a little dramatic and truly seems to only care about the octopus in regards to his own life's purpose. I found myself screaming at the screen when he would not help his little friend in very dire circumstances. We rescue animals in nature all the time. I don't see why he thought his little friend should not be afforded any benefits from having a giant human advocate. Even the octopus' end -left to be ravaged by the nature surrounding it was too much for me. I know it's the 'circle of life' but under the pretense of him supposedly having formed a special loving bond with her- it really bothered me. He interfered with her natural habitat to make his video but would not interfere to save her. He is a rich self absorbed bore.

Him aside- I've always been fascinated by the magic of octopuses. She does not disappoint with her quick mind, magic skills, and sweet curiosity. Hopefully this documentary will raise sensitivity and awareness towards these beautiful intelligent creatures and why they should be protected much in the same way we do with dolphins. The only reason I give this 5 stars instead of the 1 star (Foster deserves for his narcissism) is for raising awareness for octopuses.

Show made to binge
9 October 2020
Christina Applegate is at her best being a bad-tempered, cynical, and affluent California woman. With that said, she is not the least bit likable in the show, even while dealing with grief. But her acting skills cannot be called into question. With two strong female leads, this show is every bit as entertaining as anything out there. It deceives you into watching one episode after another by offering them in 30 minute bites. Before you know it, you've binged both seasons in a matter of days. I am not a liberal-minded type person, so the politics of the show may rub some more conservative minded the wrong way. But their political leanings fit for their environment, and I expected nothing less. Excellent writing and acting, Can't ask for much more in terms of entertainment value.

As someone who is forced to watch by husband
5 October 2020
I guess you have to be a Cohen Brothers fan to appreciate this. I love historical dramas, comedy, even romance. If something called "entertainment" fails to make me laugh or cry or get angry or 'feel things' then I don't get the point. The plots are all over the place, never realistic, terrible cliche characters I can't even enjoy hating. After being forced to watch the 1st season, I prayed it would cancel. But here we are season 4 and it still sucks. If you're into Cohen brothers style-enjoy!!

I'm obsessed with Uhtred
4 October 2020
Have watched Game of Thrones, Vikings, Peaky Blinders- etc etc..but I had never even heard of until a few weeks ago has blown me away. The characters are well developed and you feel like you get to know each of them. Uhtred is by far the most interesting character that you he root for every episode. It makes me sad that with all the garbage out there, that the series doesn't receive the attention and accolades that it should. It's an excellent show, excellent production value, excellent storylines. Each season gets more intense and storylines are seen through. I highly recommend it.

Wasted opportunity
7 June 2020
I love ALL animation and the darker subject matter appealed to me. My lofty hopes imagined it would be about children being recused from horrible abusive parents. Instead it tries to make comedy of parents starving and abusing their children. Rather than showing children's protective services and authorities as being able to save them, it shows them as further monsters. If an abused child were to see this, it does not encourage them to seek help from authorities. In more sensitive hands they could have weaved a tale that was sensitive and entertaining and could give children In bad situations hope.

Way more enjoyable than I was expecting!
10 August 2010
I went to see the sneak preview of this movie last night, walking in with low expectations. I'm not a huge fan of Jennifer Anniston, and the concept sounded a bit low brow...so I went in pretty cynical. I was pleasantly surprised! It not only "didn't suck" but was actually pretty great. I thought the subject could have easily made this very cringe worthy and hard to believe - and yet it was handled in such a way that it didn't seem THAT far-fetched (as Hollywood movies go)and the characters remained believable and even sympathetic at times.

I LOVED Jason Bateman's character. He is negative, neurotic, funny and cute all at the same time. Aniston played her role very classy, and did not try to be cutesy or overly dramatic.

I rarely believe cute little kids in movies, yet the show stealer for me was Sebastian, the son. This kid is going to be a super star one day if he keeps it up! He is just the right amount of adorable/quirky while never overdoing it. His big brown eyes well up with tears in just the right way (choked me up a couple of times), and yet could deliver 'quirk' with complete deadpan expression. Brilliant! All in all, I laughed, teared up, and managed to enjoy every minute of the experience. Is it Citizen Kane? No. But it's darn good entertainment.
