Cubicles (2019)
Relevant to Indian IT industry
The series touches the life of freshers in Indian IT industry. I can relate to these stories even though I was fresher 23 years back.
The projects that time used to match what is being shown on the show.
The different kind of characters, the protagonist - Piyush a sincere but nervous engineer, his batchmate - Kalpesh the cool and confident guy who achieves without much effort. The two office colleagues Gautam and Shetty who has their own struggles. The ambitious Sunaina and the even more nervous Neha,
And the admin guy Angad who can be a pain but also real help if befriended
Then the seniors. In first two seasons, the understanding tech lead Megha and the big boss. In 3rd season, Piyush becomes tech lead and we have a very level headed Vikram as Big boss who is really impressive as a boss.
Loha (1997)
One of the worst movie ever
So far what I've seen, this is the worst movie.
See it to believe it.
Dharmendra at 50 who can barely stand. Looks like he will fall down at any time is the hero.
Yet he is the destroyer of underworld who pulls down helicopters, stops bullets.
Mithun disappears for most part of the action. You have Manisha and Govinda for a special appearnce. They have some witty dialogues.
Lots of skin show, violence and most damaging Stupidity.
Maybe you can just watch it
Fida (2004)
Dumb...
I usually like dumb movies, provided they don't pretend they are something out of the world (eg. Jo Bole So Nihaal). The problem with "Fida" is that the makers think they have made some high tech movie, whereas this one is as dumb as possible.
To start with, the hero Jai (Shaheed Kapoor) must be the dumbest of them all. When he sees Neha (Kareena Kapoor), he falls deeply in love (Even though he has Sonia (Kim Sharma) as his girlfriend). So much so, he empties a bottle of sleeping pills to get her love or death. Should have been busted then and there; would have saved himself and others lots of trouble.
Sonia is intelligent enough to realize that she is stupid to love Jai. She promptly gets married and off to London. Good for her.
Now the stupidity of filmmakers. At the very start a hacker siphons off a whooping Rs. 550 crore from the bank account of a don, Babu Anna(Akhilendra Mishra) and police can't do anything about it. As if banks allow so much transfer and money tracking is not possible.
Akhilendra Mishra (if the name doesn't sound a bell was the famous "Krur Singh" in Chandrakanta) is a proper UP bhaiya who for some deadly acting reasons plays a Anna here. So here we have a Anna who dresses, has mannerisms like a North Indian. And tries to speak with a SouthIndian accent over his North Indian Hindi. Probably Akhilesh thinks he is Nana Patekar who have played both Anna in Parinda and a Bihari don in Apaharan, both great performances.
Back to lover boy Jai. Neha tells him a cock-a-bull story of owing 6 crores to some bhai. Jai meets Vikram(Fardeen Khan), the hacker who will pay 6 crores but Jai must take on the crime allegation on his head.
Jai takes the money, gives to Neha and surrenders himself to police. He escapes and finds then Neha is actually Vikram's girlfriend. Now you understand why he should have been busted long before.
Anyway Jai feels bad and plots revenge which gives a lot more to display his dumbness...
Sehar (2005)
Brilliant movie
I finally got the CD (original) and watched it. What a great movie. Too bad that it didn't get much audience. Now a days movies which can throw in money for publicity makes a lot of money whether they are junk or not (for eg. Kabhi alvida na kehna).
Inspired by real life incidents, the movie depicts the story of Ajay Kumar (Arshad Warshi), new SSP of Lucknow who wants to eliminate crime from Uttar Pradesh. At the same time (which is 1997), Gajraj Singh (Sushant Singh) the new age criminal leader is evolving. He eliminates the old dons one by one and becomes the leader. Organized crime gets at its pick.
The new SSP has a bunch of brave, honest police officers under him. When criminals started using cell phones, he takes the help of Pankaj Kapoor, a professor of telecommunications. The battle between the police officers and the criminals goes on through the whole movie.
Briliiantly portrayed, the characters are as real as they can be. The nexus between railway contracts with builders, politician and criminals are shown in very real times.
The performance is brilliant. Arshad Warshi surprises everyone with his strong and controlled performance. Sushant Singh is brilliant as the mastermind criminal. Mahima Choudhary gives a sweet performance as Ajay's love interest.
Overall a great movie. If you get the chance, don't miss it.
Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota (2006)
A different film
It's legendary Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah's first try at directing and he does a pretty good job with it.
This film is different from other Bollywood ones which would be hero-heroine, hero-villain story. Here the people seen are real people.
The film has four stories running simultaneously. The timing is Mumbai, September 2001.
A bride, Tillotamma Das(Konkona Sen Sharma) got married to a S/W Enginner Hemant(Jimmy Shergill) settled in USA after an internet romance. Unfortunately Hemant has to leave for USA and Tillotamma has to live with her in-laws. Her sister-in-law and mother-in-law are nuts and they make her crazy. Only her father-in-law is OK. She has to go to America somehow to join her husband.
A stockbroker, Salim (Irfan Khan) has got green card. He and his brother Javed will go to USA. But Salim is madly in love with Namrata, a much older woman. But Namrata basically uses him as one of her young lovers. Salim finds that he is cheated. He goes to America. He tries to forget her but can't.
Talented doctor Rahul has got an admission into US University. But he has his sick father to take care of in India. How will he manage his expenses. But he has a rich friend Khusboo(Ayesha Takia) who has more than soft corner for him. He is in dilemma. Will he go to US or not.
The fourth character is Rajabhai(Paresh Rawal). He takes money from people and arranges them to send to US as part of dancing troupe. One day his old fame Tara of 19 years comes up and asks him to send her daugther to US. The soft lover in hard businessman Rajabhai risens.
The paths of all four crosses from time to time and changes forever.
The Burning Train (1980)
One of the greatest entertainers
One of the classics, this movie remains much ahead of it's times by it's visualization and special effects. A multi-starrer in which the central theme in neither love-story nor revenge story but rather about a burning train. A very well done disaster movie.
Ashok(Dharmendra) and Vinod(Vinod Khanna) are two friends. Ashok is engaged with Seema(Hema Malini) and Vinod is married with Sheetal(Parveen Bobby).
Vinod has dreams of building a a super fast train which will cover the distance between Delhi and Bombay(Mumbai) withing 12 hours(That too in 1980).Rajdhani currently takes 16.5 hours at best. And he wins the tender from Indian Railways to build the fastest train. He asks the two tender losers Ranjeet(Danny) and Rakesh(Vinod Mehra) to help him. But Ranjeet has some sinister plans in mind.
Meanwhile Ashok's life is in a mess. His father failed in business and committed suicide. His fiancée Seema has broke the engagement.
Six years passed by. The train is built. Vinod's marriage with Sheetal is almost falling apart because of Vinod's full devotion to the train.
The maiden journey of the train starts at Delhi. Enter a vast range of characters as passengars, a smuggler, a priest, a mullah, a cbi officer, a dancer etc. The 3rd hero, a small time crook Ravi(Jitendra) meets his love Neetu Singh on the train.
Ashok is also on the train . But he sees Seema in the train, gets so disturbed that he gets down at Agra. Meanwhile Ranjeet has removed the brakes and placed bombs in the train and has got down in Agra.
Ashok and Ranjeet meet in a bar in Agra and Ashok learns about the bomb. He rushes back to the train to save it. The train's brake has failed and only desperate measures can now save it.
Ashok learns now that Seema's leg is amputated and that's why she broke the engagement. Meanwhile in the chaos, fire spreads, the train burns and hence the name "The Burning train".
The rest of the movie is a struggle by everyone, particularly by Ashok, Vinod and Ravi to prevent the disaster from happening.
See the movie..it's worth a watch.
Shaadi Se Pehle (2006)
One of the Dumbest movie ever, not so bad
This movie is total nonsense. But sometimes total nonsense works. All the characters are acting so dumb that I wonder at the end all will say, hey it was all a plot to fool the hero.
Plot outline is this. Ashish (Akshayee Khanna) from doing window cleaning, selling malish on road became creative director in ad agency earning multi millions so that his sweethearts(Ayesha Takia) father agrees to give his daughter.
After engagement, he overhears his doctor on phone mentioning that his young patient has cancer. And so he tries all bad things so that his fiancée hates him, including an affair with a model Sonia (Mallika Sherawat). Anyway Sonia has a brother Anna(Sunil Shetty) who lives in Malaysia and is a big don. Anna's pet dialogue is "Anna, Choubish ghanta chakanna" (Anna is alert all 24 hours).
Now Ashish can't escape the clutches of Anna even if he wants to get back to Ayesha.
The movie is so stupid that you just relax. Somehow, this feels better than forced comedy like "malamal weekly". Akshayee Khanna does a great job here as usual. He is one of the most natural actors and comedy suits him well. Surprisingly Mallika does a good job. Sunil Shetty(Anna) had a good time too.
Baton Baton Mein (1979)
Great family movie
The 70s small budget Bollywood movies portraying normal family lives were among the all time great family movies. The prominent movie makers among them were Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Even today you find movies like "Golmaal", "Chupke Chupke", "Chotti si baat", "rajnigandha" running every other day on the movie channels. And you feel refreshed after watching one.
Another such movie is "Baton Baton Mein". This movie depicts Christians of Bombay. Timeline is in the 70's. Bombay was beautiful. Tony Briganza (Amol Palekar) and Nancy Perreira (Tina Munim) with her uncle Tom(David) both catch the same local train to go to office from Bandra. And yes, the trains have sufficient space in them those days.
Romance blossoms. And why not. Tony(Amol) has an attractive personality. Amol looked great in his French cut, a change from his trademark pencil thin moustache.
They both have their share of problems. Nancy(Tina) has suffered a previously failed affair. Her mother Rossie(Pearl Padamsee) is a chatterbox who just can't wait to get her daughter married off to Tony, much to Tony's annoyance. Nancy's brother Sabhi is a guitar enthusiasist. And Nancy has a lover Henry(mazhar khan) who doesn't have the guts to tell her so.
Tony's mother is a real tight lady. His father is understanding though.
One day things get real bad when Nancy and Tony's families met at a cinema hall. Nancy's mother declares Tony as to be son-in-law. Tony's mother got real surprised as she wasn't knowing about Nancy.
This caused a break up amongst them. Ultimately it took the sensible members, Tony's father and Nancy's uncle to patch up things and all were happy.
Of Love and Shadows (1994)
Great political movie..not so great love story
If you don't go by the poster of the movie(which portrayed it to be a passionate love story), you'd enjoy the movie.
I haven't read the novel and I was engrossed very quickly with what was shown in the movie. The year is 1973 and Chile has been taken over by military coup. An woman talks to Francesco(a phychiatrist) about the nightmares she is having after military has tortured her and her husband. Her voice breaks as she says "one after another..again and again" Irene (Connelly) belongs to the upper class, she is innocent, engaged to her cousin, a military captain since childhood. She also publishes a magazine. She employed Francesco(Banderas) who is now out of job as the photographer. Francesco and his family are totally against the human rights violation that occurs. His brother is a priest in church who tries to prevent things.
When the magazine crew went to interview Evangelina, a magical woman, military comes and interferes. Evangelina with superhuman strength picks up military commander Ramirez and throws him away. They left. Shortly after, Evangelina is taken by military and she has disappeared.
Irene and Francesco tried to find out where Evangelina is. In the process, their lives and others take a complete turn-oil. And expectedly they fall in love.
The scenes of military regime is very well depicted. The arrogance of their police, the fear among civilians are very real and touching. Of memorable scenes are Evangelina's friend in military who is torn between his job needs and the human ways.
The Girl (1987)
Another "Lolita"
John Bart, a respected middle aged person is seduced by a young girl Pat (daughter of rich parents). He tries to get over her but unsuccessful. He then takes her away to a isolated place and stays with her.
Unknown to John, his wife Eva is carrying on an affair with a much younger man. She tries to end the affair but he doesn't. He is obsessed with her.
A detective follows John and finds the isolated place. He blackmails them. Pat then kills him.
The movie ends with John returning to his wife and Pat committing suicide.
Hum Dum (2005)
Refreshing sweet movie
This movie I initially watched without interest on a TV channel. But gradually the sweetness of the movie hooked me. What seemed like nonsense seemed to have merit.
This movie is different. It doesn't have the typical Bollywood melodrama. It's more like a amateur movie or TV serial but with much more sweetness.
The characters are refreshing. They don't behave like they are out of the world. The hero is so like th guy u encounter everyday at college. His acting is very natural.
Why the movie didn't click is lack of melodrama and stars.
The movie is about two strangers who take part in a game show. They have to spend some time with each other(at girls place, at boys place, at hotel and then alone) and at the end part(not meeting for another 20 years). Earning 10 crore each.
The boy has to pay 75 lakhs. The girl requires money to keep her house of dog shelter. Siddhant, the hero is always happy go lucky guy. He cracks jokes but is very good at heart. He is not successful and wants to make his dad feel proud. The girl is also engaged to marry to a successful guy. The guy is very understanding and allows his would be for this competition. For rest..see the movie.
Jo Bole So Nihaal (2005)
Timepass movie
The movie is supposed to be a comedy, and does somewhat average.
Don't expect this to be a great movie or take things seriously then u'll be thoroughly disappointed.
The movie starts well. Nihal Singh a policeman of Punjab gets the chance to grab international terrorist "Romeo". But he is so innocent he believes in Romeo's story and romeo escapes. nihal singh has to catch romeo for this is the only way he can recover his and family's prestige.
so he comes to newyork to catch "romeo".
the comedy was good at the start but it dragged after that. The heroine and the vamp are dump and show a lot, as it is supposed to be.
See the movie with full timepass mode.
