I, Robot (2004)
This movie is my favorite of all time. It literally was one of the biggest influence in my life leading to a lifelong passionate career that I mention at the end.
I must have watched this movie 200 times in 17years. I don't get the Haters but they can hate all they want. Its especially hilarious seeing those who give 1 as a rating with a nonsense and weird reason, I never understood that with giving a 1 to any movie... maybe the one where a guy watches paint dry for 2 hrs deserves it.
If you watched it on a bootleg dvd or got moldy overpriced popcorn in cinema and pepsi with no gas then its probably reason why.
I'm obviously biased and I can write an even nore extremely detailed review than this but no one will probably care haha.
The Characters are excellent match with the actors Starting with the legend himself: Detective Del Spooner. Focusing on his technophobic and hatred caused and exacerbated by robots trying to kill him and giving him lifelong PTSD in separate accidents which I'll mention soon. His "I don't care" attitude and overall badass personality contrasts perfectly with Dr's Calvin, a timid uptight nerdy by the book' rich scientist.
But We cannot ignore the fact that Alan Tudyk's acting was oscar worthy considering he was wearing green morph suit was as sonny and the animation was superb for 2004.
Admitting that its not be completely true to the book but changes elements for cinematic reasons. The opening scene sets the tone perfectly by laying out the fundamental 3 laws on robotics and humanity co existing whilst somewhat causes a dilemma and contradictory action when an NS5 had to make a decision based on probability of survival and spooner was traumatized badly when the bot saved him and not the little girl from drowning.
The ending was also bittersweet when the retired NS5 models emerged back from storage instead of waiting still fully operational to losing their charge slowly and eventually them being destroyed for parts which is sad.
My interpretation is that new technology can be a double edged sword and older things are sometimes better due to simplicity and practical uses that get the job done. Don't revamp what's perfectly acceptable in society all at once but rather gradually upgrade it incrementally.
OH AND ALSO NEVER GIVE AN AI SUPERCOMPUTER MACHINE LIKE VIKI SELF AWARENESS, THOUGHTS, FREE WILL AND TOO MUCH POWER THAT CORRUPTS THE 3 LAWS ENDING UP AS A GENOCIDAL THAT CONTROLS A LEGION OF SUPER ROBOTS.
The movie had a couple memorable moments and witty dialogue and quotes, as for scenes the nost notable are when Sonny made Spooner eat his words when told robots are machines to serve us only. Without the unique capabilities of creative talents such as art from a thoughts and dreams. Then sonny the sigma NS6 draws a sketch in 5 seconds better than most of us... from a dream/vision he had.
Another one is when spooner rescues the cat in the mansion being torn down last second even though he dislikes them. It was a wholesome gesture.
The most hilarious has to be the one where he terrifies Dr Calvin and doesn't care when she's panicking on the motorcycle because it uses petrol as fuel and is highly combustible whilst he's driving like a maniac.
This next part is not relevant to my mediocre review but its what ended up influencing me making a big descsion to a point where the my life went on this lifelong commitment. You can stop reading here but if you want to see why it's the best ever 10/10 movie for me personally is because:
It made me pursue robotics and A.i as my area of study and research. Currently Doing my PhD in modeling a general purpose A.i to learn and evolve in the same way our brain does, with an unconventional approach.
The principal goal is giving as little external information and examples to it and only having basic senses for interaction with the world like cameras and audio and microphone. This in conjunction with minimal programming also involving quantum computing in some aspects,
It has to learn and evolve by observation and experience from humans (and a fundamental law to that differentiate it from us by having limited to no free will ideally) akin to like a baby does and hopefully mimic ethical human behavior and not become skynet. Its my life's goal and I'll be in a nursing home to get to that point.
I'm also considering at a point in this journey into implementing a prototype version of this A. I in advanced robotic prosthetic limbs, mainly hands and arms, objective is to assist amputees reclaim the natural dexterity and prescion our body is capable of, whilst teaching the ai to have a symbiotic and synergistic connection with the person to help refine the movements and simultaneously learning from what the person wants to do by it's intuition and context. That's another 10 years research minimum to get a prototype, with current technology.
All this because of a movie I watched when I was a teenager and then delving into Asimov's literature works and others shortly after. This road started almost half the time of my life. Currently being 36. Unfortunately the consensus is its mediocre at best.
But to me, this is a cherished experience and will hold a special place in my heart for life. Thank you.
I, Robot.
