Another Round (2020)

Exactly the movie I need to reopen the cinemas
11 June 2021
My expectations were already set pretty high for this movie (Oscar, Mads Mikkelsen as lead and Thomas Vinterberg), but it exceeded those expectations!

First of all was this a very humane vision on midlife crisis slops. The emotions portrayed by the actors and Mads Mikkelsen in particular felt very honest. The special relation of the alcohol culture in Denmark with this movie caused both comedic as dramatic moments in the story. Vinterberg succeeded very well in lifting this movie to a melancholic vision on midlife crisis instead of a simple but dull comedy. Hearing the emotions in the theater and my own experience, many people both laughed and shed some tears during the 2 hour long duration. This is the best movie of Vinterberg in years.

The movie in general and especially the fantastic end scene gave me a great feeling while exiting the cinema. This was exactly the movie experience I needed to reopen cinemas after all the COVID19 misery.

Sex (2020)

An interesting small buget look on the complexity of love and sex
6 January 2021
This series offers us an insight in the life of the young Danish woman Cathrine. She has a boyfriend, Simon and she works at a sex helpline. Ironically her own sex life falls short. This offers the starting point for the humble and intimous storyline of the series.

'Sex' succeeds in making us part of the up-and-downs of a realistic love relationship. With especially great acting of lead actrice Asta Kamma August. Although not every episode is sharp enough and the episodes are sometimes too short (~15min) to fully support the rythm of the storyline.

However, this series stands out with some great cinematography that is just enough balanced for the simple and low budget story. 7/10 good, but not great.

Intimate and beautiful
1 January 2019
"Klem" is the director's debut from Ish Ait Hamou and he delivers quite a beautiful short film. The storyline is quite simple but the short succeeds in our emotional engagement and also with a beautiful understanding. A good work!

A deep emotional take on "The Gang of Nijvel' terror
23 October 2018
The film starts in the mid 80s during the terror of the still unknown Gang of Nijvel in Belgium. This gang committed very violent robberies on supermarkets with no focus on looting, but more on causing victims and chaos.

Instead of choosing the big take on this dark history, this movie follows a young victim and his grandparents (especially his grandfather). In this way, the movie can focus more on the very personal pain and the suffering from a terrible familydrama. Not only feelings of loss, but also anger for the injustice of the slobbing police investigation and no communication towards the victims and family. Director Stijn Coninx succeeded very well in making a deep-emotionally touching connection with the victim and his grandfather. We can feel the pain, anger, sense for revenge and justice from the grandfather. A sometimes intimate cinematography emphasizes this even more.

It takes a real effort to keep this sort of special emotional band with a character throughout the whole duration of a movie, but Coninx succeeded with is work. The whole movietheater was sileced by the end, a proof the movie delivered it's message and reached most of it's goal.

The Command (2018)

A really good film with strong emotional engagement.
13 October 2018
Since it is based on the true story of the K-141 Kursk submarine disaster, we already know the end of the story. So it was a true challenge for director Thomas Vinterberg (known for Jagten, Festen,...) to take a special approach for his movie. He made the clear choice to focus on the emotion and the human side of this tragedy, rather than on the political side. The result is a strong movie which succeeds in dragging you into the submarine itself and it's victims (and wifes). It's no coincidence that the aspect ratio shifts to wide during the whole submarine sequence and back to narrow (16:9) at the beginning and conclusion of the story. Or like the director himself said at the moviepremière in Ghent, Belgium: "Well ... you should see it"

Nice sequences without a full general idea
2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film the other day in the movie theater mainly out of interest in the theme; 8 bored teenagers passingen through summer with sex and mischief. And others I've heared of watched it mainly because of the sensation and explicit scenes, also to be found in the book this film was based on. The film sure delivers this situation, but nothing more. A general idea and direction misses a bit.

The film is divided in 4 main parts that focus each time on one of the 8 teenagers. It takes the 4 parts to fully reconstruct the thruth behind the summer of their lives. But at the end, knowing the whole story didn't gave a real feeling of satisfaction. So the film doesn't really succeed in digging deeper that the sensation it delivers.

Nevertheless the film still amuses you enough to finish it with pleasure thanks to some amuseable scenes.

A Quiet Place (2018)

(Silence)
15 May 2018
It has been a long time since I was overwhelmed by a movie like A Quiet place. Set place in an frightened silent world, every sound means immenant danger. Already from the beginning we are made clear of that. What follows is a collection of very tensive scenes in which you will grab your seat for sure.

The movie lacks many music or sounds in general, but that actually makes this movie very fresh in some way. Since most movies today overwhelm us with sounds. While this movie can just overwhelm you without sound...

One of the greater revelations in Flemish TV
6 May 2018
This series took me by surprise and a lot of factors contributed to that. Very talented acting and especially with the two young main characters. Next to that original filming like Flemish TV hasn't really seen before or even on an international scale! The cinematography succeeds in taking us closer to the characters and the story with original perspectives and filming techniques and you can take that quite literally.

But above all, the story grabs you by the throat, to say it harsh. This series contains only 8 episodes and it feels like a real rollercoaster ride. You constantly get swinged in every emotion, anger, denial, happiness, sadness, ... and so on.

Bravo to the writers for their fresh yet strong and emtional storyline, bravo to the director for making this into a briljant tv show, bravo to the DOP for the excellent cinematography, bravo to the other crewmembers, bravo to the talented cast!

Overwhelming, humorous, emotional, stunning, wow Marvel!
26 April 2018
The past months my expectations for this movie were increasing and increasing until the point I was worried wether the movie could live up to it and, oh boy, it sure did!

Infinity War delivers a great job with combining all these superheroes into a spectacular though emotional collage. Which is a difficult job because every character could be banished into a smaller role because there's simply not more screentime to give. But no, that didn't happen, the story doesn't dissappoint and even contains some special surprises, some more subtile than others. Thumbs up for the directors and the writers to master this collision of all built up Marvel storylines.

What got me the most personally was the deeper dig into the backgrond story of Thanos and Gamora and their relationship, because it brought more depth to the movie. This review contains no spoilers, especially a sensitive subject with this movie, but the ending only hungers for the next suite... just one year to go.

A must see for every superheroe fanatic, movielover or just the periodic movietheater visiter. So I hope you can use the same adjectives as I did in the title!

Magnificent built-up tension and very good emotional involvement
5 April 2018
Already from the start I was drawn into the movie. First with the emotional involvement due to the tragedy that happens to the main character and later in the movie because of the slowly, yet magnificent built-up tension towards the conclusion of the story. The acting is very decent too. But mostly the argumentatins used in the trial were very well motivated and the link to the reality of the contemporary problems with procedural error made this movie very good. A true recommendation.

A decent and exciting crime-detective movie
6 November 2017
This movie is one of the better Belgian crime movies I've seen so far. In the beginning the movie has its flaws with some unclear scenes or stereotypes, but the more you get involved in the murder case, the more clear it becomes how excellent the cinematography fits with some exciting action scenes. Towards the climax of the movie there are some very well directed action scenes and the movies becomes more tensive and the story as well proves to be more ingenious.

A prove that you don't need big budgets to make good sci-fi
17 October 2017
When I first saw an announcement for this movie I thought it would be just another sci-fi movie with a decent, but not that original story and a smaller budget. Nevertheless I decided to watch it and then I realized how much mistaken I was. This movie brings one of the more original stories I've seen in sci-fi the last couple of years. Combined with an excellent cinematography and good acting this movie lifts itself up. I know many people who don't like to watch movies with smaller budgets, mostly foreign movies, not produced in Hollywood, but then again, this movie proves you don't need to have the big budgets to get full potential.

A magnificent story in a beautiful cinematography
25 February 2017
This movie leads us through a dark side of world war 2. It shows us the horrors of the Holocaust without being too shocking nor ignoring the reality. The movie's running time is quite long (over 3 hours) but still the story line and the cinematography can capture us within the movie with ease. The cinematography is original with it's choice of black/white colours with some rare colours that gives meaning in emotional scenes. A real masterwork that should be seen!
