Fox News Watch (1999– )

If you only watch one news show a week, make it this one!
31 March 2007
Fox News Watch is the only news show I consider appointment TV. This show is thoughtful and thorough. The panel is made up of Cal Thomas, who was a reporter for NBC in the 60s and is now a well-known conservative columnist, Jane Hall, a respected journalism professor, Jim Pinkerton, a former Reagan administration adviser, and Neal Gabler, a liberal columnist. First and foremost, these people are journalists, and they take journalism seriously. This is not a typical talking head show where the conservatives and liberals shout at each other. They often agree with each other when it comes to attacking shoddy or lazy journalism wherever they see it. And Fox News itself is not beyond their purview. One of the funniest lines I have heard on TV in years was a line by Gabler when he prefaced his criticism of FNC a couple of weeks ago by saying, "I don't want to bite the hand that feeds me Kool-aid..." They cover the important stories of the week in a well-paced format that will keep you wanting more.

Lots of great memories, but not enough
18 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
For someone who grew up a Cardinals fan, this is a wonderful look back at the last 40 years of Cardinals baseball. I remember a lot of these events, either in person or TV or the radio. If you grew up a baseball Cardinals fan, this is a must see. The interviews and the feature on the all-time Busch Stadium-era team were great. It focuses too much on the last two years, and I thought that was disappointing. There were 10 minutes (more or less) on the 2004 World Series loss, but less time devoted to the 82 WS win and appearances in 85 and 87. I guess this was put together by the Cardinals and Major League Baseball, but I would have liked to have seen some mention of the other events at Busch. The football Cardinals played 22 seasons there, including the Coryell "Cardiac Cardinals" of the 70s. The Rams also played half their first season there, winning three of their four games. The Beatles and other great bands played there, and there were also lots of tractor pulls and other offbeat events. Nothing on any of that. I would have also liked to have seen some behind-the-scenes stuff on the stadium itself: the ground crew, the maintenance crew, vendors, a time-lapse video of the transition from baseball to football, and more. It's a great trip down memory lane, but it only tells part of the story of the stadium.
