Seat 25 (2017)
Getting a seat
No pun intended - this is a drama more than a science fiction movie. I reckon the outline I read made me believe this was going to be way more out there - another pun to work with. But that aside, if you read that too, you understand what I mean. If not, than I reckon you will once you watch the movie. Decisions and announcements ... and how the public but also the people around you react to a major change in your life ... well it will dictate certain things.
So while there is a lot of Science Fiction that feed the story (the premise itself is based on that and not in reality at the moment at least), this is a human story. If you connect with that and the problems that arise and can empathize with the main character ... your journey with her will be delightful ... even without reaching the main goal (maybe ... and pun intended).
A Thought of Ecstasy (2017)
Not just a thought
No pun intended - because it is also the depiction of ... well I reckon you can call it Ecstasy. Or a highlight - a moment of absolute satisfaction? That may be way too much to be honest. One thing you should know: there is a lot of nudity and a lot of graphic scenes (as in explicit). Just be aware of that, if you have issues with those things. Especially because the actors do look directly at you at some points - like after or during pleasing themselves.
That being said, the movie itself stays bleak for most of the time. At least when it comes (sorry for the pun) to the mood - and I reckon also the photography. Which looks stunning by the way. Apparently the DP is usually a photo camera man and not a film camera man. Maybe some will see that as a bad thing - but I liked what he shot - be open minded. Which is true for the whole movie experience. Depending on how much you've seen media wise, how easy you can be shocked ... well this will all play into your experience. Also if you get some nods to other movies.
Slow paced and some other things that might connect with most viewers - but the filmmaker is consistent. And I reckon we will see more of him ... I wouldn't mind.
In bed with ...
No pun intended - this is actually the title this was streaming under. And made it easier to find. Try to search for a movie called Victoria! This won't be the first that pops up (if that is deserved or not, I'll let you decide). This is about a woman who has not found herself - but also has to deal with a lot of ... well outside interference (this is also a wrestling term, but you get what I mean I assume).
Acting is really good - the movie makes sense. Even though one major side character (although I reckon you could see him as a major character) has weird motivations ... on the other hand can you really blame him? Same goes for the pair that is responsible for some ups and downs she has to go through. Not sure how the justice system works, but some things seem unfair too ... on the other hand, life never is entirely fair so there is that ... anyway, a decent movie overall with good performances.
Fatal Memory (2022)
Forget about it
No pun intended - I mean the title already suggest that the movie deals with Memory ... and the loss of it to a degree. It also deals with trust and moral questions ... amongst other things. If you suddenly woke up and found out ... well that you did stuff that can not be considered "good"? It is tough to wrap ones head around that. So the movie sets a stage, where we see this woman struggle with who she apparently was before ... and who she feels she is now.
There is quite a lot of tension and the thriller aspect of it works quite well. You may figure out where this is leading before others do - not sure how much this will make things better or worse when it comes to your viewing experience ... it is decent I'd say.
Dangerous Attraction (2000)
Same same but different
No pun intended - and can be used for more than one instance. I am just going to name one, so as to not give away something about the movie. Which I think is quite apparent to anyone who will watch this, but let's focus on the one thing I will say: the main actress is using a body double! And she has every right to do so - it just feels weird that the camera cuts "away" every time we see her breast area. So when you see that area exposed, you never see her face with it - in the frame that is.
Which makes it quite obvious that she is using a body double. Which is kinda funny considereing that she sometimes has clothes on, that do reveal something anyway (piercing through, no pun intended). But enough about optics - although as you will testify yourself, it is very much about those ... but different. And we are back to my summary line.
The movie does not hold too many surprised for you - but it is quite nicely and decently told. There could be more steamy stuff for some folk I reckon, but it still works as a thriller as it is ... while being entirely predictable of course ...
Can't Have You (2018)
No pun intended - and I think that is the title it was listed on the streaming service I watched this. There was another title when I searched for it here on imdb. I guess someone isn't too happy about the movie - allegedly even the director does not like it. I have seen way better movies to be fair. Have seen way worse though too. The acting is inconsistent and the plot and some of the subplot are ridiculous to say the least.
Still you can have some fun with this, there is some (little) nudity for those that care about those things (no pun intended here either). It is about someone trying to highlight relationships, marriage and life in general. I don't think you will be enlightened after the movie is over ... but maybe and hopefully a little bit entertained .. otherwise it would be a waste of time ...
After Ever Happy (2022)
Before it is over
Boy oh boy - first of all no pun intended with my summary line there. This gets worse and worse. I have not read the books, but I thought this would be the last movie. Now you could argue I do not have to watch them. Wrong! Since I started watching them, I have to .. it is a rule ... I myself made up. Kidding aside, I do like to finish things that I started. Though I have told others not to watch stuff, this should tell you why I sometimes do watch things that I should ... well know better ... and therefor not watch.
That all aside, the whole franchise (film wise, never read the books this is based on) started quite promising. But it spiralled downwards from there. Actually this reminded me of that polish trilogy (which is also based on novels and might also get another entry, even if it shouldn't), though this franchise right here has less ... well let's call it steamy stuff. And this particular entry even less than the other movies.
I guess it is story related since the two main characters are apart most of the time. Still others could have filled in - no pun intended. But that is not the reason I personally think this is the worst of them all (until the next one?) - it is because the movie seems to go through the motions ... without the emotions (is that a pun? I feel not guilty about it)! Also too much drama - at least for me and I assume many others. Now teenagers may think that some of the cliche plot stuff that is thrown our way, actually has some merit ... I'll let you decide.
I don't believe that the actors are unable to act - but I also don't think they had the best ... well let's say circumstances to act in. And then comes an ending, that while it is built on some curious premise (another document just left laying around for someone to find and some unnecessary drama over it - check, check and chek ... and maybe even more checks, but no balance!) ... it actually would have worked as an ending! But instead we get a ... to be continued ... No! I object! Let's end it here ... I know no one is listening ... still felt good to write it out. On to the next one, which I assume will be released next year ... and is supposed to be the last one ... finally!
Dark Beacon (2017)
Not the brightest light(house)
No pun intended and not something to be taken too literally. Maybe I am not even talking about the movie but about ... myself? Who knows? Yes I should know - but do I? Ok, let's not go down that road, my mind is twisted enough as it is. And talking about twisting ... yes the movie does hold a surprise or two for you. Maybe you can guess them before they happen ... if you actually think about it ... you probably will.
But if you have a heart for low budget (horror) movies, you will suspend your disbelief and just go with the flow. The acting is decent enough and the story and the mystery work from start to finish.
Where Love Lives (2021)
Love is everything
No pun intended - hopefully love lives with you too. And this is about Billy Porter and other individuals you may not have heard of (or maybe it is just me). I had no idea what this would be since I only read the title before I streamed it - was free on the platform I subscribe too. If you are not a fan of Billy, the documentary may not be up your alley.
Just be aware what you are about to watch, before you do exactly that and that are dissapointed. There is a lot more to Billy - and I think there is a better documentary just about him that could ... well actually should exist. I reckon it will happen sometime in the future. Until then, you have this here, to understand him and how it was not so long ago to be who he is, in a society who did not seem to care about him ... not very much has changed, but he can be public now ... which is a step in the right direction for sure.
Dziewczyny z Dubaju (2021)
No pun intended - I was not aware of the controversy the movie had stirred up. Polish movies seem to aim for acting out and giving people things to talk about. While this is not nearly as explicit as another movie (that at the time of writing is a trilogy), it does contain a lot of nudity ... and a lot of violence too.
Are we all open to the concept of being bought? Is there a price where we would do something we would otherwise call morally wrong? Like how much would it take for you to sleep with someone? Or are you only "available" for oral satisfaction? To be paid for that is of course. Now before you get outraged at the thought, it is not me who asks that question in the first place - at least not here in this case. It is the movie (or the book I reckon this is based on).
In Germany there are two versions availabel to screen - one of them is cut - around 3 minutes being cut out. I watched that by mistake, but read what I missed out on. To be honest, they could have left that stuff in - but on the other hand, especially the scene towards the end, I am almost thankful they cut it out ... it is abhorring to say the least. But it is part of the movie and it is part of the journey ... a journey that may make you mad! Rightfully so ..
My Client's Wife (2020)
Twist(y) and shout
No pun intended - I mean can you blame the shouting? Especially when you know why the shouting is taking place? Sounds like a riddle? Well when the movie finally unwinds (and rewinds I reckon) and unravels the whole plot by explaining everything to us ... you will be the judge (no pun intended again).
There is some fun you can have here - you have to be down for the things that are quite out there to work for you. I have seen way better thriller to be honest, but this is quite decent. Acting is ok too and the story is ok (even if it could have been told a bit tighter - I don't think this counts as a pun).
Aap wong 2 (2016)
More Gigolo and ...
Well I only tagged the tag, because I will be talking about the ending. I assume you have seen the first movie - though I do not think it is necessary for you to have seen it to be honest. That first one ended on a ... well let's call it a bad note maybe - but we are back and do glow more or less. There is some fun along the way (no pun intended - but satisfaction guranteed - well sort of and to a small degree - nudity is a thing here, though nothing too crazy).
But the ending - I did not see that coming and I will talk about it now. While there was some signs beforehand, I don't think you could see this turn so violent ... really mad to be honest. Not sure if that was necessary - I think it should have ended on a more positive note. But maybe to be able to make a movie like that, they had to give in and make an ending that made the whole thing a moral tale ... I am guessing that it is a sort of a message to kill off the character, to make people see there is no happy ending (not that kind and no pun intended) ...
Aap wong (2015)
No pun intended - and also I hope you won't get fooled by the new title this got (might be a Germany only thing though): Squirt game! No there is no relation to the show Squid Game - and the "squirt" part may be a bit of an exaggeration too.
No this is about a male gigolo (primarily) - but since things get re-released with "better" sounding titles here, this was up for the take. Never mind this is from China and not from Korea too (which would be where Squid Game was produced). Not that publishers or those who hold the rights for movies ever cared about things like that. Main goal is selling things. And in a way they succeeded with me - although I only "rented" this to stream. And watching it once is more than enough. There is nudity, there is drama .. and there is the fact that this obviously was part 1 of 2 movies ... next one following up ... Gigolo 2 if you wonder ... and not better (unfortunately).
Siew Lup (2016)
Another one bites the ... dust(?)
No pun intended - especially because there is more meat to it all (did I pack another pun into my first one? Maybe ...). But let me begin with Rebecca Chen - someone I did not have on my radar and someone who does not seem to have many films under her belt (or over it, depending on your viewpoint).
Overall the movie is by the numbers and you can guess the twists if you want to call them that. Even the ending is ... well not surprising at all. But up to that moment you get enough nudity and violence to keep you "entertained". All under the understanding that this is a movie - there is no fun or anything good happening if you'd consider this for the real world of course.
But this is a movie and it obviously uses many cliches to lure the viewer in. And then just does its job ... nothing more and nothing less. If you are into that kind of movie you will be completely satisfied ... which cannot be said about every character in the movie (sorry for that pun)
Die Wannseekonferenz (2022)
Final solution talks
No pun intended - this movie is based on a true event or gathering or whatever you would call it. I have to admit it has been a while since I had my history lessons and I don't have everything on hold or in the back of my mind. So I was not aware or thinking about how decisions were made back then - especially this one in particular.
There are multiple reasons why Jews were made out to be "enemies" of Germany. There is a rich history of how they have been misstreated throughout history. Apart from that, I assume two main reasons were: the money they had and to distract the German public from the war itself. That all being said, the question raised was: how to deal with them and how to do without people getting suspicious! Also how to make it ... "effecient"! A lot of things that are being said here are quite disgusting - you are supposed to be enraged by how nonchalant they talk about destroying (and the some) lives and livelihoods ... and while it remains that way (talking and not actual violence shown), this is quite difficult to watch ... because even if you don't remember everything like myself, you know where it all lead to (no pun intended here either)
JGA: Jasmin. Gina. Anna. (2022)
Life is a party (not)
No pun intended - and also let me put this up front: suspend your disbelief and do not overthink stuff. Like the weird ending (let's call it that) - but also most of what happens in between. Because the core of the story is quite relatable. You have a woman and her female friends who try to figure out what to do next (after a break up). And after her best friend will not be available due to marriage and even more importantly being pregnant! Or in other words life.
Not that life with the other women is done or incomplete - but it may feel like that for them. There is society pressure, but there is pressure from within to achieve things. Or rather to have something - otherwise feeling not complete. So there are messages the movie tries to convey - even if most almost get destroyed by some bad jokes. The movie also has some good jokes of course - just saying. Depending on your ability to get on board with certain things, you'll like this more or less ... or not at all.
Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)
Group but alone
No pun intended - the group is back. They will be back for a fourth one (apparently or allegedly, heard rumors for a while now) and to be fair the third entry into the saga is 5 years old now. I kind of am ashamed I just got around watching it. Still this felt fresh and cool at the beginning, even when it touched upon some of the same themes the previous movies had, then seems to become "boring" - well for some I reckon, I would not count myself amongst them.
The movie is fun - and apart from the strong beginning it also has a strong finish! The last song is ... well it may blow your mind (no not Blackstreet again - though I wouldn't have minded). Actually the song they choose appreciates the theme of the movie. Finding oneself - truly finding! Without needing anyone else - but still being there for everyone they love ... and cherish! It actually would make a great ending and would be a cool trilogy as it is ... but I will watch the next one! And probably way faster than I watched this one, when it comes out.
Alexis Knapp or rather her character was sidelined here, I reckon she may have been pregnant and they may have put that in the story. Other than her, you get a lot of people back and a new character who also becomes quite the charismatic villain. Also we get a different side from one of the group ... she has quite the abilities! Don't mess with her is what I am trying to say here.
Ostfriesisch für Anfänger (2016)
Learning from each other
No pun intended - and literal learning as well as metaphorical speaking. Though when it comes to the story or rather how it develops - well you won't find too many new things in this movie and it will be quite predictable to say the least. Still the man himself (Dieter Hallervorden) with many years (decades actually) in the business finds something new to do - again no pun intended.
His accent may not be the best in the world, but if that is what you will get hung up on ... well don't watch the movie in the first place. Cliches and other things should worry you more! If those give you pause - otherwise suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the movie for what it is. This really is meant to be a fun escape from reality while also touching upon some issues society faces ... spread love if you can and where you can. Could be read into this movie too and how it evolves - which again is no surprise at all.
À bras ouverts (2017)
Welcome ... just don't stay (too long)
No pun intended - and one of the criticisms many have when they hear others talk about welcoming people and giving them shelter and many other things. So our main character here is being challenged: you are open minded? Put your money where your mouth is (quite literally speaking). And he bites ... sort of. Because he doesn't think anything will come of it.
And the show begins. Or the comedy, because the clash of cultures and status (rich/poor) works quite well. There may have been better movies that showcase that, better comedies even, but this is still quite fun. The movie has a good cast and everyone is doing a good job throughout.
Suspend your disbelief, lower your expectations and see the "homeless" (wanderers? Not sure if there is a politically correct term and I only say that because some people may get or be offended either way) "invade" the rich ... a feelgood movie with some obstacles to say the least.
Xin Qiji 1162 (2020)
War - what is it good for(?)
Many have wondered and asked, so no pun intended. And in case you are also thinking of Rush Hour for some reason (my mind is wired a similar way, so I feel you), there is no connection to that either (not really that is). The movie itself - well I really like it. And yes I am known for rating better or higher than others, in this case you can add that I am quite fond of eastern movies too. I guess movies in general, but the fighting in those movies and having grown up with not just Sword and Sandal movies (Hercules and others), but also the Shaw Brothers ... well it gives me an edge I reckon.
All that being said, the action scenes in this are quite well choreographed. And it gets quite violent too. Even our main character does stuff you may not totally agree - he is charismatic and I would say most will like him ... but he has edges ... quite a few of them. Sometimes it would have been better to ... well "chill" a bit (no pun intended)! Especially when it comes to punishment orders, if you can call them that.
This is based on historic events, but I assume the makers took more than a few liberties. And that is more than ok - suspend your disbelief and go with the flow.
The scent (away)
No pun intended - the show is not related to the movie of the same name by Tykwer. I have not read the novel that was based on - so not sure if it takes elements from that. Full disclosure - maybe I should start reading more again, but at the moment I'm fully occupied with watching stuff and of course life itself.
And talking about life and decisions, it is something that plays a major role here. And a life that was taken and those connected to the person (and the whodunnit aspect). There is quite a lot of tension that builds up - some of that is being released in erotic fashion, some in violence. Some in both simultanously - not always easy to watch ... especially when things seem to get out of control and people are hurt (physically or psychologically) ... get a taste and decide (no pun intended) if this is for you.
White Lines (2020)
No pun intended - uncovering the past does effect the present. Everything in the present - because finding out her brother was not where she thought he went, but in a totally different country with a totally different group of people ... well that will take quite a bit of time to unravel and find out what this is all about.
Meanwhile the hubby is far away - everyone she knows isn't there either, so she has to form new relationships. And by doing so, she mingles in the business of people she should not get involved with. There is quite a bit of nudity, there is quite a bit of violence, but there is also some romance.
It is decent enough, especially considering all the secrets and all the suspense the movie builds. The ending wraps up quite quickly and feels like it cheats a bit by being too simple and almost making the viewer feel this could have been way shorter than it is .. also there are a few cliches along the way. You have to suspend your disbelief and you have to accept certain things/flaws and cannot be bothered by them. Acting wise I really liked it - seen better, seen worse.
Found Ghost Hunting Footage
No pun intended - and before you shut off: yes I am wary when I read about a movie being or using the "found footage" genre or whatever you want to call it. The movie on hand here is quite fresh though and makes fun of the usual tropes. And achieves something that I would not think possible: making this fun and entertaining with just one lead character! Blair Witch send three people into the woods - this only needs one - an influencer, because he interacts with his followers. And some random people who just jump on his stream I reckon.
I imagine there are way more jokes in the comments that I was able to read - but even so, this may work as comedy in the beginning, but really knows when to push the switch (or smash button if you'll excuse the pun)! And go over to the horror movie tropes - and while it probably would not hold on to scrutiny - not if you really really think about it that is - it works superficially and for what it tries to say .. which is a bit of critique of social media and a social commentary too. While scaring you ... and having quite a few nods to horror movies of the past ... a love letter of sorts ... a haunted one, so not for the squeamish.
Carrying her weight
No pun intended - the movie may not go the route you expect it to go ... well at least not all the time. Because we can understand certain things and we can understand that someone is more complex than their exterior image! Because the title character is not just defined by her body. Unfortunately it is what defines her for many kids who are her age ... and who bully her to say the least.
Really well played and for a "fresh blood" (feature length debut from the director) this is quite something to say the least. Really well made and quite violent and bloody - which is something you should not have an issue with! Otherwise the movie may not be to your liking ... for the wrong reasons. Morally speaking ... well there is something to be said - not just about the ones doing the bullying but about the main character ... but again, it is not always easy to decide what one wants to do ... whether you agree with her or not, I empathize fully.
No pun intended - and just to get it out of the way: I have not read the (allegedly) controversial novel this is based on. But even in not doing that, the nihilistic undertone (if you can call it that) is very apparent. And you kind of understand the kid who sort of kickstarts the whole thing. At least in the beginning - because while he is right in the math he does (and boy am I "wasting" a lot of time with the reviews of mine - also with many other things), you have to find an inner peace and understanding of what you do and why you do it.
Sleeping is necessary. Your body needs the rest - at least at the time of writing. I don't know if someone reads this in 2121 and thinks: what is he talking about? Who knows where we and what we develop into? Maybe all my reviews will be lost - I wouldn't be there to notice. Maybe all this is nothing ... but one thing is for sure: the movie is something! And it has a power .. it has a force .. it has something to tell you! About nothing becoming something big ... and you having to make up your mind what it all means ... if it means anything ... so many things (and puns) ...
