An idiotic illogical trainwreck...
1 August 2019
Just saw this at the Fantasia Film Festival and gotta say I regretted staying to the end. The first half was absolutely promising with an eerie atmosphere but once the hugely illogical story-line comes into play, I was praying for a brilliant twist at the end to explain all my questions. Suffice it to say, the twist was moronic and hugely unsatisfying. Acting, especially from Riley, was quite strong and poor Alicia Silverstone must be desperate for cash these days as her bit role was completely throwaway and required very little from her.

Yet another disappointment from the half-baked faux-goth bro-sis team. Let's hope this is their last film.

I had to walk out of this one too....

Warning: Spoilers
Ouch. Fantasia 2016 is not starting off well for me. I first walked out of The Lure (3/10) and now We are the Flesh joins my walk-out film list.

Like The Lure, the film started off with tremendous promise, introducing us to a first-time director with a very unique uncompromising vision that isn't afraid to push taboos. Unfortunately, We are the Flesh tries *too* hard to be shocking that I found myself rather numb with boredom by the halfway mark. The explicit sexuality became repetitive, the momentum of the film ponderous and eventually pretentious.

Kudos for a very game cast and the director for having the balls to go wherever he wants to go. Next time, spend a bit more time on the story and a bit less on the bodily fluids.

Had to walk out....

Warning: Spoilers
After an extremely promising, magical and inventive first half-hour, the sirens' spell quickly wore off of me. The musical numbers, of which there are too many, have completely nonsensical lyrics and so little originality in them that the pace slows down to unbearable levels. It was like watching a bunch of predictable drag queen numbers.

The plot is a complete mess, with random characters popping in and out with little to no consequence other than to up the surreal vibe the film so desperately wants to project, and none of the world's 'rules' remain consistent.

Like a great looking lover whose only talents are to look good, I got bored of this film quickly and proudly ejected myself from the equation before things dragged out even more.

(The first time Polish director shows a lot of promise though and I'll definitely check out her next feature. Her video, with the help of a few ADHD children in the background, thanking the Fantasia audience before the film started was very charming.)

Much love from Montreal!
