20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
FOUR YEARS OLD AND MY FIRST SUNDAY MATINEE
As I recall, it was a huge adventure. My cousin Leslie and I will have an overnight trip to her Auntie at 690 Broadway. We sleep on a Murphy bed which descends from a closet. Little do I know, that the same building will become our home in 1960.
We wake to breakfast juice and toasted bread in an upright contraption, the likes of which I had never seen. We are picked up later by Leslie's father, Les who escorts us down Broadway, past the Fargo Theatre to the Isis. It was all very exciting, popcorn and the Jules Verne sea adventure. Don't remember any of the actors at the time, James Mason and Kirk Douglas, but I do recall and exciting scenes with the squid.
This is my introduction to the movies. My entire life was education through the films I saw. Helped define my journey from Fargo, North Dakota to Chicago, New York, Los Angeles.
You will see in my Movie Memory series how each of these films produced a button to my future.
