This movie makes filmmaking look easy
2 October 2020
Centered around Don Shirley's tours in the Deep South States, this motion picture follow the interaction of two completely opposing characters, the well-educated, soft spoken and mannered Dr Shirley and his bodyguard, driver Tony Vallelonga. This kind of movies usually rely on the interaction between the main characters, and, in this case, Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali deliver nothing short of perfection. Throughout the movie, you can see them evolving to adapt to the other, while creating numerous cases of situational comedy. Shirley's motivation behind these tours was to show, through his art, that race is not correlated with intelligence and class. It is also showcased how racism can leave deep wounds even to a well accomplished person, who ends up feeling an outcast. This movie manages to have multiple strong messages without shoving them into your face, which makes it good both for the moments when you are looking for meaning in a movie and for the nights when you want to watch a movie before going to bed. It is definitely a must see.
