Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
Overall Enjoyable
If you can let yourself have fun during a movie, you'll enjoy it. Not nearly as bad a movie as some are saying. (Although definitely not as good as the first.) I think the writers (1) focused too much on writing a story where other people were the villains, as opposed to making it a straight shark movie, and (2) got a little overly ambitious with the multiple megs, giant squid, and weird lizard things. Some things I think also defied the laws of physics, but again, sometimes we just need to suspend our disbelief during movies. I still liked it. Was happy to see Pippin the dog reprise his role!
Dare Me (2019)
Great storyline, TERRIBLE military inaccuracies.
Ok, look. This show had a great plot, and it was overall very well done. But I'm deducting like 3 full stars for the glaring inaccuracies in the way the Marine recruiter characters are portrayed. Would it have killed the studio to hire one single military veteran to consult on these things?
Just a handful of things that immediately come to mind:
- The lead recruiter's name is "Sarge" Will. The lead recruiter would more than likely be an E-7 (Gunnery Sergeant) or at the very least an E-6 (Staff Sergeant). This is a HUGE distinction in the Marine Corps. You don't even call a Gunnery Sergeant "Sergeant," much less "Sarge." Even if they had called him "Gunny" Will, it would have been acceptable.
- Sarge Will's haircut. They even joke about it at one point. No way a Marine NCO would have hair that long. Especially a recruiter, who is considered part of the "public image" of the Corps.
- Kurtz's ******** facial hair. Are you kidding me?!?! Come on. At least have your actor shave his face!
- The implication that Kurtz had some sort of criminal background. Recruiters are required to go through additional background checks (POSTA) in order to qualify for the position. I've seen servicemembers fail these background checks over petty crimes committed 15 years prior.
- Multiple instances of calling the Marines "Soldiers." This is a major no-go. Soldiers are in the Army. Marines are in the Marines. A Marine would be insulted if you called him a Soldier.
- Scene at the shooting range: terrible trigger squeeze and just terrible control of the weapon in general.
- Uniforms looking wrinkled, not pressed.
- Wearing of headgear indoors.
- Not knowing the difference between the position of attention and parade rest. One instance of saluting while at parade rest.
I could keep going. You get the point. We'll end up watching the 2nd season, but I sure wish they did a better job with this stuff.
