Could Have Been Good. A Wasted Opportunity
7 July 2023
The build up and tension in Run Rabbit Run, had it been handled differently, could have produced a very good Psychological Horror but there are too many plot holes and inconsistencies present. The other big issue is the relationship between mother and daughter. Neither should have been left alone with the other and they were both incredibly annoying. At least the actors didn't have to learn many lines because the entire film seems to be made up of people screaming the name 'Mia', especially The mother (Sarah Snook) which gets very grating after about 20 minutes!! In the end the film goes nowhere and there is no payoff or conclusion to speak of. One last thing. I know making things dark in Horror/Thriller films is done to add tension but we, the viewer, still need to be able to see what is happening. Many films recently seem to be just a blank, black screen. If you want to make things that dark then do away with the film and write/direct for radio instead!

Fire Island (2023)

Appalling
7 July 2023
I try not to be too down on some films but Fire Island really is awful. It has nothing to do with the fact that many of the characters are gay, that doesn't bother me at all, but the direction, editing, music, acting and story are really terrible. The characters are obnoxious, unlikeable and underdeveloped and why they would be friends in the first place is beyond me. You don't feel for any them. Nothing happens in the first 30 mins but we do get almost endless shots of wild deer and driving (for a film that's only 83 mins in length it shows there is very little story and lots of padding) and you can see who the killer is the moment you see them. There is no atmosphere, no tension just a lot of people who you want to see killed off. This is the worst film I've seen in 2023.

Totally Let Down By The Final 20 Minutes
4 July 2023
I love horror and I had read so many good things about Hereditary, but tend to watch more obscure titles, so I hadn't got round to it. Today, I thought I would give it a go. I usually really like Toni Collette as an actress but I thought her performance in this was over the top at the end. As for the film itself, the first 2/3rds is superb, about a family falling apart and in mourning, with very creepy undertones. It builds a huge amount of suspense, is very odd in places and I was looking for a good payoff...that just didn't happen. It turned in a woefully bad ending and the final few scenes actually made me laugh. What a shame that something that spends 1 hr 45 mins doing so much right just falls apart at the seams for the sort of schlock ending that you can see in most 3rd rate, low budget, teen horrors. It felt very much like the writers and Director just didn't know what to do at the end and opted for the ridiculous. I am a low scorer in general if you are wondering why it gets a 5, and it only gets that because of the first 2/3rds. I was well on the way to giving this a 8, which is a really good score from me, but the last 20 mins totally throws it down the drain.

Terrible
22 June 2023
I watch a lot of really bad movies, mainly horror. Some of them are good fun and others aren't and 'Don't look In The Cellar' definitely fits into the latter group. It's appalling. Plot, sets, script, direction are all absolutely terrible. As for the acting, well I would be hard pushed to think or another film where the acting was worse. A pile of wooden planks would have been more believable.

This really feels like a bunch of mates, with absolutely no experience, got together for the weekend with a video camera for a laugh. They might have had a laugh but I'm afraid anyone viewing this will be bored to tears. I've also read that this cost $1.2 million to make. How? This looks like no more than $10,000 and even that's pushing it! Listen to all the other reviews and avoid.

Don't Watch The English Dub Version.
24 May 2023
Jess Franco is never going to be regarded as a Kubrick but many of his films do have a certain something. On many occasions that 'something' was Lina Romay who always 'perked' proceedings up.

This isn't one of Franco's 'better' movies but it is ruined completely by one of the worst english dub tracks I've heard. I much prefer to watch films in the original language with subtitles and this proves why. The stereotypical voices, turgid screams and totally uninterested delivery just turns this in to a complete waste of time and effort

I've often wondered how many Cult films from the 60's/70's could be improved if they were re-cut with modern voiceover acting teams.

Sometimes the charm of a bad dubbing track can make a movie funnier but this one just made my teeth grate. It truly is horrendous.

I intend to seek out the Spanish version of this to see if it improves things.

The Whale (2022)

Mesmerising
26 February 2023
I watch hundreds of films each year but I very rarely write a review on IMDB because, by the time I rate something, many people have already given their 'opinion' plus I think I'm a notorious low scorer because ratings of 9 or 10 should only be given to the best of the best.

However, occasionally, you watch something so good, so emotional, so heartbreaking and so deserving that silence just doesn't do it justice.

There are enough 'opinions' already written about the story and the central character so you don't need me to add a further one, other than to say this is the finest film I have watched for many years with an absolutely powerhouse performance from Brendan Fraser, in a film that will define his career, plus a small but excellent supporting cast.

When I get to the end of a film and I can barely see the credits because of the tears then I know I've watched something very special.

Quite simply, The Whale is magnificent.

Disappointing!
8 November 2022
I really enjoyed the first two parts in this franchise but from 'Viral' onwards it has been a very mixed bag.

The main problems with this entry appears to be an over reliance on forced humour that leave it devoid of any true horror or scares and a selection of characters so obnoxious that you never 'feel' for any of them. Not everyone behaved like this in 1999, although I am from the UK not the US.

There are a couple of segments that start with promise but run out of steam very quickly and end with a whimper which is a shame.

I suppose, like many, I return to sequels/continued franchises in the hope that there may may be another strong entry in the series but it happens very infrequently and quantity tends to outshine quality.

Not the worst of the five films so far but definitely not the best either.

Superb Continuation
4 November 2022
Yet another excellent entry in The Blackwell Ghost series of films. As soon as I saw this was out I had to watch it. I started watching these last year and it has been a gripping ride. Very cleverly made on a small budget, with the quality and attention to detail you should really see from much bigger films/studios, but rarely do. Not going to put any spoilers in but if you are a fan of these then make sure you watch Part 7, it really is very good and then start looking forward to Part 8, and if you haven't started watching them yet then go right back to the beginning. You really won't be disappointed!
