The Hike (I) (2011)
1/10
Über-violent film of absolutely no value or moral purpose
12 October 2017
This really is a truly awful film. Girls go camping together in completely inappropriate clothing, so one is warned this is going to go badly wrong. Sadistic, gratuitous violence seems to be glorified with no plot justification, other than the glorification of gratuitous violence. This really dredges the deepest pits of human depravity, supposedly in the name of entertainment, as there is no moral compass in this film whatever, it is sickeningly depraved, though well shot and with plenty of tension, but tension only caused by the incipient nastiness which runs virtually throughout. Best avoided at all cost. I wish I knew it was this bad before watching.

Eden Lodge (2015)

Worth watching, short horror film.

I found most of the characters in the film pretty unlikeable. Mawky girls, quiet, simmering men, a horrible local but a very nice old lady. Much is unexpected and it takes a good while for the plot themes to start coming together. Some don't seem to have any logical connection to the plot resolution at the end, frankly. The gore is not too much for the faint-hearted, though very effective and realistic. The music is well used and has a nice depth and presence. I've seen a lot worse that this. It's a decent enough horror film and worth a watch.

A strange film, an interesting watch, but strangely flawed.

Warning: Spoilers
The film is very well shot and lit, it certainly has high production values. It is compelling to watch, though it seems long at times. There is a slow-moving intensity to it, both literally, with the slow-motion shots early and late on, and in the sense of a slow rhythmical tread to the story. Set, supposedly in 1923, there are surely too many ideas from a later time, the Thirties in particular, to make it properly credible. What is well caught is the despair and darkness of post-World War 1 Germany, with collapsing economy, high unemployment and the resultant problems. The revelation of the medical experimental factory looks too far-fetched and fantasticational to me and ill-consorts with the setting and time-period. Another issue is that there is little or nothing to like or admire in the central character, played quietly but intensely by David Carradine. One keeps on wishing that he'd followed his brother's example and shot himself, so dark and unpleasant is he. One feels an affinity for the Liv Ullmann and Gert Frobe characters, trying hard to live honestly in a world falling apart. I feel that big problem is trying to equate two different periods in Berlin at one and the same time. The Twenties and Thirties were not the same, though connected, of course, and should have been kept separate. Putting them together didn't help the film of its credibility.

Bonjour la Classe (1993– )

Very fine and funny comedy set in a private school.

Only one series was made of this extremely funny and insightful series. The writers clearly knew their quarry. The characters are from real life, just that comedic-bit enlarged to give dramatic punch. Having taught in such a place for 34 years, you see those types reflected here. The writing is sharp and includes lots of seemingly-irrelevant details, but which contribute to the success of the whole. The cast is exceptionally strong, having fine players in all the key roles, the children included. This sort of traditional comedy does not fit into the modern BBC's view of itself as a reforming left-wing advocate, so it has never been repeated or released on DVD. It is very funny, though and has a following which admires its qualities of observational humour, whatever the politics-de-jour at Broadcasting House. Nigel Planer is tremendous as the main character, a keen new language teacher in a school of sleepy old professionals. You will laugh out loud at this, if you haven't seen it before, unless you are averse to school-based comedy. Production standards are very high throughout, this is high-quality television.
