Star Wars: The Disillusionment of a Fan Base
21 December 2015
I renounce Disney and Star Wars.

If you have only seen the movies, you probably will like this one. But if you are a fan of the novels and the expanded universe – you will most likely hate it, or it will make you extremely uncomfortable. It ignores all of the events of the novels and makes up an entirely different (and extremely lame) history. I wish I could love this movie. Heck, I wish I could like it.

Why would Disney pay 4 billion dollars for a franchise with a rich universe and a broad fan base only to negate most of it? Oh, yea. That's apparently Abram's thing – completely ruining an established franchise. I foresee the need for Star Wars recovery groups.

TFA is just a retread of Episode IV ANH - Chasing after a droid containing important information, and blowing up a giant planet destroying weapon. So, there was all of this hype regarding firing the initial screenwriter, and Abrams taking it over. That was obviously a huge mistake.

The film looked great. It was fun, exciting, and had most of the great elements of a Star Wars story. The score by Williams is great. Special FX also great. I like the new characters Finn, Rey, and Poe. Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren were both lame and lacking characters. And it's difficult to swallow that Ren, trained in both the light and dark side, even with an injury, would have such a difficult time battling an individual with no apparent force talent wielding a light saber, or a girl with obvious force talent, but who is completely untrained.

Harrison Ford is truly the star of this film, and he is great. His character arc was completed with full satisfaction.

Unfortunately the film is so fast paced, and there is never a pointer scene where we are allowed to breathe and to digest the plot of the film.

I wish Disney would have just followed through with re-releasing the first 6 films in 3-D. They would have made money on that investment, and that strategy would have afforded them the time to really analyze the vast amount of material they had to draw from. There are several of the novel trilogies that would have made far better films and not abandoned a vast fan base. If they would have consulted with one or a few of these great Scifi writers, there might have even been a way to tell Abram's story and still make it fit in the existing universe.

Plot Hole - Anakin & Luke's Lightsaber – That is the one that was lost when Darth Vader chopped off Luke's hand in Bespin. I'm not sure, but didn't it fall out of the bottom with Luke when he ended up hanging on the antenna, and it continued to plummet into the atmosphere of that gas giant? (Though, somewhere in the expanded universe, it was recovered along with his hand, and was used to clone a version of Luke.)

Conclusion – This was a good movie, just not a good Star Wars movie. TFA makes any of the prequel trilogy look like masterpieces.

Lower your expectations!
11 May 2014
How on earth they got Treat Williams and Ronny Cox to do this movie is an amazing feat. This movie is of course essentially a rip off of Jurassic Park: The Lost World - well... the final two reels anyhow. Unfortunately, the script is so horrible. (If you were a fireman, standing holding an ax, and a dinosaur was in the process of tearing into somebody 4 feet away from you, wouldn't you at least take a swing, instead of standing there for five seconds with a bored look on your face?)

The visual FX are OK for this movie. They are about one generation from being 'done' as the dinosaurs didn't seem to blend in with the lighting from scene to scene, but not entirely distracting. The "script" is just so bad, that is really what takes you out of the movie. Although, I wonder if there was any writing forethought at all, and if this really wasn't just an exercise in improv, then having the effects done to suit the filmed improv. Visually, this movie was a touch better than a similar movie called Carnosaur (1993), though this is twenty years later in the technology for the FX.

The reason for the two stars is simply because the visual FX were at times OK. And I did appreciate the fact that when the dinosaurs tear into people, they didn't feel the need to show the actual teeth tearing the flesh. There were cutaways where you only saw the blood splatter - reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's style.

The Mythbusters once proved that "you can polish a turd", however in this case, the script is a turd that probably couldn't be polished with out a few more rewrites - or a burning the first draft, and restarting all together.

Great Stand-Up, beware of the Short Film
3 August 2013
The stand up portion of When All the Leaves Blow away is absolutely hysterical. Wright's dry deadpan humor kept me laughing during the entire concert. I am amazed that Wright can perform his routine and keep it so dead pan and straight faced, particularly when the audience is cracking up.

I viewed this via a streaming service, so the concert was unfortunately followed up with Wright's own short film "One Soldier". It really feels like one eternity. (I believe that the DVD version also includes this short film.) Clearly an exposition of Wrights internal monologue regarding life and death, this film is tortuously boring, and not at all funny. Even when Wright includes formerly hysterical material from his stand up routine, these jokes fall below flat. It is possible when viewed separate from the concert material, it is a good short film. It is definitely interesting, dry, and witty, much more quirky than funny. However, its presentation directly following the laugh out loud comedy is a real turn off.

If I was rating only the stand-up concert, it would have gotten a 10. But the short film pulls the presentation down to a five. Do yourself a favor, watch the stand up concert, but skip the short film. Or save "One Soldier" for a time when you wish to feel more existential.

Spankin' Laughter
18 May 2010
Restaurateur and retired Heavy-Weight champion Cleon 'Slammin' Salmon (Michael Clarke Duncan) threatens and beats his wait staff into up-selling their customers so that they can earn 20 grand in one evening to pay off his gambling debt. As the stakes are continually raised, so too are the antics that ensue as each waiter tries to outdo one another, earn the ten thousand dollar cash prize, or save themselves from a brutal beating - while all anxiously await the passing of a diamond ring the manager had swallowed.

This is an enjoyable edition to Broken Lizards filmography. Like their other films, The Slammin' Salmon features excellent, quirky, and weird characters, and an outlandish plot. Here one can also see and appreciate the group's maturity as there is more situational humor, far less shtick, and relatively little scatological humor as compared to their previous films. This is also Kevin Heffernen's amicable debut as a director.

The Slammin' Salmon has fairly good pacing, though it does slow down at times, there are still lots of laugh out loud moments throughout the piece. Of course the true strength of this movie is in the writing and performances. As per usual, the Lizards play a host of characters with personality flaws galore, such as 'Zongo' the OCD/Schizophrenic waiter; or Donnie the alcoholic bus boy with low self esteem. These quirky characters are joined by great performances form Michael Clarke Duncan as 'the champ', April Bowlby as the upbeat 'little train that could' waitress, to the always level-headed Tara, played by Cobie Smulders.

This film could have used a better soundtrack, which had been a staple in other Lizard productions. Although they did write a humorous take off of "The Eye of the Tiger" which is featured during the credits. I also found the scenes in the kitchen and waiter prep area to be altogether unbelievable. Though I've not worked as a cook or a waiter, I've scene the frenetic goings on in the kitchen and prep areas, just passing by on the way to the restroom. They didn't capture that feel nor fully capitalize on this norm as these scenes are most always calm and free of frenzy. This, I believe is one major element that makes the film slow down.

I enjoyed the film. And a fan of the Broken Lizard troupe, I agree with others that it is not as good as Super Troopers. However, with a piece such as great as that, it will be difficult for them to ever match it. An excellent comedy, well worth watching.

The Old Bait and Switch
25 November 2009
This movie is a sheer and utter disappointment. The cast features two fantastic comedic actors with Steve Carell and Dane Cook. The poster also tries to fool the audience into thinking they are going to watch a comedy. Unfortunately, the truth is far from that and suddenly one realizes they've been suckered into a painful drama with only hints of comedic moments.

I really felt for Carrel's character, he was quite sympathetic, and his "real life" problems were ones that most adults can identify with. I also really despised Cook's character, as he was such a douche-bag. I believe they were good performances. There was a bit too much telegraphing of the plot, which made the movie feel extremely arduous throughout. However, the ending is satisfying, so one doesn't end up feeling like it was two hours one has lost to eternity.

I'm not against comedians showing off their full range and doing drama. Robin Williams, Jim Carey, and Billy Crystal have shown us their dramatic, dark, and zany sides too. However, generally the dramas that these guys were/are in, are marketed as such; hence no bait and switch.

Overall, the movie is probably really a five out of ten, but I really feel bamboozled because of the usage of two great comedic minds to convey this dramatic fluff, so I rate it lower. Ultimately this movie feels too close to real life to function as entertainment. Perhaps the film makers were going more for inspiration? Definitely a movie for drama fans, but not for those comedy fans expecting something like the 40 Year-old Virgin or Good Luck Chuck.

Die Hard! Suburbia
26 May 2009
This was definitely a so-so movie. A few funny moments born of the physical comedy; however, not much on dialog. Kevin James is usually pretty funny, but in this movie he seemed restrained. I'm not sure if it was because the script lacked substance, or the director didn't let James let loose or what. Part of the problem may have been that the director and writer beat the audience over the head with the concept that James's Character, Paul Blart, is basically a total looser. We get it. We got it in the first ten minutes. We didn't need an additional 20 minutes of being shown that he was a looser.... get on with the plot!

And predictable, oh my gosh, could they have followed "the formula" any closer? Looser, faces challenge, overcomes personal problems and idiosyncrasies in a ridiculously short period of time, he defeats all enemies, the end. And, they unfortunately also showed many of the best physical comedic moments in the trailers. The film took itself way too seriously, they would have been better off to more closely follow a Die Hard plot, and really spoofed it.

The Spirit (2008)

A Film Noir a la Garbage
26 May 2009
The Spirit, which lacked anything suggested by the title, was a total comic book type of movie with no discernible script or character development. The best scene was towards the begging featuring a brutal fight between the hero and villain. Although, it was quite ridiculous that they were hitting each other over the head with toilet bowls. It was a struggle just to sit through this movie, which would have been better in a toilet bowl.

The visual FX were very good, but didn't always serve any plot points. I'm also not real sure what point Eva Mendes' character was to serve, aside from eye candy. Unfortunately, besides her nude shot, most scenes she was in were boring, and slowed the momentum way down. The hero character was also quite boring. Samuel Jackson's character was fairly interesting, but somewhat too over the top compared to the melancholy of most of the rest of the characters.

Overall, a pretty bad movie. Even Dick Tracy from over 20 years ago is a far more interesting, visually stimulating, and engaging film. The Spirit, skip it.

Star Trek 2.0 - Sort of...
17 May 2009
I am a fan of all Star Trek TV series and Films; though I do not own any merchandise, uniforms, or Vulcan ears. I grew up watching TOS, adjusted to TNG, and thoroughly enjoyed the Latest Enterprise series. Though I do like the TNG the best, I do understand the significance of TOS in regards to its tackling of social issues, as well as inspiring an entire generation of engineers to produce the technology we live with today. I've never been to any Trek or Sci-fi conventions, so I am uncertain if I could be classified as a Trekkie or a Trekker, and wouldn't be insulted if someone called me either. (Some loathe being called a Trekkie.)

This latest Star Trek film is both incredibly awesome, and somewhat disappointing. The action is great, the actors are wonderful, the special FX are excellent. The one issue I am having a difficult time coping with is the alternate universe. In essence, though this film adopts much of TOS and Enterprise's back story, it creates an impossible paradox of time travel, as well as completely altering the Star Trek universe if they decide to further this particular plot line in future films or TV series. Though the alternate universe issue is a well used device of TOS, TNG, and Enterprise; it is creating cognitive dissonance for me to attempt to reconcile these new plot points.

However, the film is great, the characters are believable and real. Plus, the film is a lot of fun as we get to meet the young Kirk, Spook, Sulu, Checkov, Scotty, McCoy, and Uhura. There is a plethora of nods to TOS to satisfy everyone's inner Trekkie or Trekker, as well as plenty of new developments to increase our curiosity. My mother, who likes Star Trek well enough, but who is not anywhere close to understanding the subtleties of the alternate universe, particularly enjoyed this film too.

And the Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth
16 March 2009
Revenge of the Nerds may turn out to be one of those comedy classics similar to Caddy Shack, Animal House, and Porky's. R.O.N. was probably intended to be a B movie however, it ended up being far more than that, similar to the phenomenon that Napoleon Dynamite had 20 years later. The film features a somewhat unique perspective of the underdogs overcoming adversity. Although this film is probably geared more towards being a teen flick, it certainly can have a much broader audience appeal.

Robert Carradine's performance of Lewis, the head geek, is so on target, I think he may have type cast himself into that character. Though, his choosing to remain with the franchise for three additional sequels is somewhat questionable as they were of inferior quality scripts. Timmothy Bustfiel is also great as Poindexter, as is Curtis Armstrong as Booger. Anthony Edwards certainly became the biggest star of this bunch, and was amicable as Gilbert, the more introverted of our favorite nerds. And this was just before John Goodman started on Rosanne.

Aside from all the various geek clichés that are featured in the films, there is ample potty humor & shtick, some marijuana humor, and plenty of T&A. Definitely is worth the 90 minutes to watch, and better to rent than try to watch on TV, as the language and nudity which makes it funnier is cut.

Nerds gone Awful!
16 March 2009
Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise is a horrible sequel. The only redeeming qualities is the sound track featuring Pseudo Echo's cover of "Funky Town", and .38 Special's "Take Me Back To Paradise". And though it was fun and somewhat nostalgic to see our favorite nerds again, the script was just awful, and the plot exceedingly thin.

This was clearly made for the sake of making the studio money. I had thought that it was a rushed sequel, as the script was so bad. However, this film was put out three years after the original, allowing for plenty of time for a quality plot and script to be developed. Like its contemporaries such as the Police Academy series, this sequel just lets the audience down and was unfortunately continued after this horrible train wreck.

A Decent Epitaph for Dead Like Me
15 March 2009
Dead Like Me: Life After Death, is a good entry into the series. Though not quite as fun or engaging as the series was, it was quite enjoyable to see the characters again, and how they have all grown, matured, and subtly changed. It felt a bit restrained in comparison to the episodes which had a bit more energy and emotional content. However, the quality of dialog, special effects, and visual design are all very good.

Surely, this film won't be as enjoyable to individuals who are not familiar with the series, as they won't perceive the subtle character differences, and certainly won't understand why the reaper team is so frustrated with the new team leader of Cameron Kane. Nor will neophytes to the series pick up on the fact that George's mom has also grown and matured significantly, or why it was such a big deal that she reveals her secret to her sister. And despite the fact that they did an excellent job of introducing "the world" that the story is built upon, the significance of Der Waffle Haus, Happy Time, and even Murray the cat, are all lost.

Overall, it was a satisfying experience, and yet leaves me regretting the series was canceled so prematurely. Dead Like Me was such a refreshing show, with its dark humor, yet its light and happy sadness. The ensemble cast, weird deaths, and character arcs, are all sorely missed. In fact, I canceled my Showtime subscription when I heard they had canceled the show. I hope there are additional installments into the franchise, but I fear that this is it. And if that is the case, it was a satisfying way to tie it up, unlike the unceremonious cut it received five years ago.

Decent Installment in the series
24 February 2009
This is the third installment in the Underworld franchise, though it is set as a prequel. It also appears that they have neatly sewn up the entire series, with little to no intention of adding any other stories. This picture was very well done, and for fans of the first film, an enjoyable and satisfying installment. The film makers give us a clearer picture of the origins of both the Vampires and Lycans in the world they created.

Clearly the female lead was essentially a carbon copy of Kate Beckinsale's character in look, dialog, attitude, etc. It might have been a bit more interesting to have taken Sonja's character in a somewhat different direction, as we'd already gotten the rebellious vampire chick. Bill Nighy is great as always. Though his character is extremely unlikable in this film; ruthless, plotting and selfish. But that is in accordance with the rest of the series.

As this film takes place before the invention of firearms, it was interesting to see the use of hand to hand combat and sword play for the fight sequences. Something we only got a bit of a taste of in the first two installments. And the action sequences were well done. Overall the movie was good, a must for Underworld fans. However, this is definitely much more of an action flick, than a vampire or werewolf movie.

Excellent laughter with just a touch of heart
22 February 2009
Simon Pegg does it again with another excellent performance. Though not as campy or satirical as Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead, Run Fatboy Run features his excellent comedic timing, and a solid cast. I wouldn't necessarily classify this movie as a romantic comedy, it does have a bit of that in its tone. However, it does contain plenty of the slapstick that we've come to appreciate from Pegg's previous work.

Pegg plays Dennis, a looser who has made nothing of his life but a mess. He discovers his ex-fiancée (Newton) is seeing Whit (Azaria) which hearkens jealousy, and the subsequent reevaluation of his life. He vows to run a marathon against his advisory Whit, to prove to that he can accomplish something. In the end he proves to himself that he can be more than he has thus far achieved, and winds up a hero not only to his love, but also the entire city.

A fun movie, well worth the time to watch.

Not quite as funny as I expected
22 February 2009
The Pineapple Express is not as funny as some of Seth Rogen's other films, like Superbad, or the 40 Year Old Virgin, and is somewhat disappointing. That said however, it is a funny film and well worth watching.

The premise and plot is somewhat predictable as a couple of stoners get involved with a murderous drug dealer, and stumble and bumble whilst on the run. The situations are sometimes predictable and sometimes quite funny. Rogen's and Franco's performances are both great, and leave the audience laughing.

Overall well worth watching.

It's good for ya' comedy
22 February 2009
This is unfortunately Carlin's last recorded HBO concert, from a series that lasted over 30 years. Though this may not be his "best" work, it is excellent, funny, and thought provoking. This recording is also a bit different from most of his other concerts that it is a bit lengthier than most of his other concerts.

Throughout his long, prolific, and influential career, Carlin has moved from the more observational humor and fart jokes, towards a more 'humanitarian' viewpoint of society and culture. His focus on the English Language and euphemisms increased throughout the years, and culminates in this performance. Though, I would argue that his audio book "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?" best displays his vast wit with regards to language, euphemisms, and the breakdown of our values. It's Bad For Ya is quite indicative of his long transformation from a comedian to a writer.

If you are offended by foul language or the disparagement of the church, you will probably not like any of Carlin's stand up material. However, if you enjoy being mentally stimulated and can tolerate the language and blasphemy, you would probably greatly enjoy this concert.

Wow - Mind Blowing Action
22 February 2009
The Dark Knight was probably the best action film I've ever seen. Not only is the design, tone, special FX, sound, and music all were excellent; but the script was dense, complex, and thorough. The performances from the actors were all very good, particularly Ledger, who took the Joker into a realm of sociopath that we've not seen in a batman character before. This may be Ledger's best performance from his all too short career.

The only issue I have is the extreme grossness and goriness of the Two-Face make up/special FX. I think it goes a bit too far to have little bits of flesh dangling from his visible bone structure (The only thing I believe that was better from the previous Bat Mans series). But, the director doesn't use too much "face time" on that character, so the look remains shocking and not overdone.

Certainly The Dark Knight will stand out for quite some time as the best comic book movie, as it has that as its roots. However, it may also stand as a masterpiece in its own right.

Burn Before Watching
22 February 2009
Burn After Reading is a difficult movie to quantify. It has comedic moments, and I believe that is the overall intention. However, it also features some confusing drama, some of which has no seeming point. I suppose it is in the WTF? milieu of film genre, but it really isn't cerebral. Weird.

Brad Pitt certainly has the best character and performance as the idiotic personal trainer secret agent wannabe. He is quite funny in just about every scene he's in. But that is off set by Malcovich's angry and quirky character, which I can't even remember what the heck happened to him in the end. It is also unclear as what the point of Clooney's character was, perhaps other than being an A-hole. Weird.

Though there are some funny moments, I finished the movie and continued to ask myself: "what was the point of that?" Not quite as bad as 90 minutes of your life you won't get back, but almost. Weird.

Eagle Eye (2008)

Enjoyable Action Flick
22 February 2009
Eagle Eye was an entertaining trip. Sure, the plot was similar to "the Net", or more recently Die Hard 4; shared plot points from "the Terminator" series; and shared other devices well used in other on-the-run type films. However, there was good action and tension throughout the picture. In comparison, Eagle Eye is just a bit more believable than Live Free or Die Hard.

Surely, there is nothing truly outstanding in this picture. It features good special FX, a decent and well thought out plot, (mostly) believable action sequences, and a fairly satisfying villain. Though similar, Eagle Eye is comparatively better than it's contemporaries like Wanted, Die Hard 4, and X-Files 2. It was better than I expected it to be.

Hysterical and Raunchy
22 February 2009
My Best Friend's Girl is total brain candy, for those who enjoy cheap good 'ole fashion raunchy humor. Though there is nothing truly great about this movie (well, perhaps with the exception of Kate Hudson) it is a fun romp. Cook is extremely funny in this film as he adds his natural stand up like rhythm to the character. Alec Baldwin's performance is also excellent as the slick and sleazy father, who taught Tank how to manipulate women. His character is also way over the top.

My Best Friend's Girl is basically the antithesis of "Hitch": where Tank (Cook), is the man for hire; he takes women out on the worst date of their lives, with the intention to trick them into appreciating and reconnecting with their ex-boyfriend. Tank however meets his match when he's 'working' on Alexis (Hudson) and she is unmoved by his tactics, and he subsequently falls for her. There is excellent tension between the two main characters as well as between Cook's and Biggs' relationship, as Cook tries to hide his feelings from everyone, including himself. The film reaches it's climax in a hysterical montage of Tank utilizing his tactics at a wedding, where he goes way over the top with unacceptable and raunchy behavior.

This is not the movie for you if you hate raunchy bawdy humor, or if you are very religious and can't take a bit of humor against the church. If you can somewhat appreciate or at least tolerate it, once you make it through the first 10 minutes, it is pretty easy to continue. The climax ending is also as raunchy and over the top as the beginning, and may take some tolerance too. But the majority of the film is not completely offensive.

Highly recommended for fans of Superbad, the 40 Year Old Virgin, or the American Pie trilogy.

A Breakthrough in Comedy
12 January 2009
This is one of Carlin's best concerts. It is also the first Carlin concert or material that I was introduced to. Since seeing this at around the age of 13, I have become a huge Carlin fan. And I still laugh at his Rice Crispy jokes from this concert. I also enjoy the ever expanding dirty word list he ends the concert with.

This was certainly a transitional concert for Carlin as well as a break through, as he began moving out of his Hippie phase into his curmudgeon phase. Nut at this point he was still focusing on the little things we have in common, and fart jokes, not really any significant political or global humor in this concert.

X Files: I Want A Rewrite
11 January 2009
This movie is overall pretty good, but somewhat disappointing. Surely most of us where expecting a continuation of the alien themes set forth in the series and the first X Files film. Unfortunately we don't get that. Instead we get a fast forward to the lives of Mulder and Scully after they have left the bureau. I did think the gradual reveal of what became of Mulder & Scully's lives was excellent.

The new characters introduced played by Amanda Peet and Xzibit were flat, boring, and didn't serve to move the plot very well, nor did they provide a clear means to plot tension. Unfortunately, the plot didn't have as much energy as the series did, or XF1: Fight the Future. It was a fairly slow moving plot, far more dramatic and cerebral than action oriented, unlike its predecessor which found ways to balance all three elements well. As an individual film, I don't think this movie can stand on it's own. I believe that this movie depends on the audiences familiarity with the series especially, knowledge of the first film is probably not necessary in this case.

Overall, this film is not nearly as weird or out there as the series ever was, and had far less energy. However, it was satisfying to see how Mulder and Scully are getting along "now". Perhaps the next installment will get back into the dark abyss of weirdness which fans loved. However, if this is the last we ever hear from Mulder and Scully (as I suspect it is), this was a fairly satisfying way to tie up and close the X Files.

Fumble in the Jungle
4 January 2009
Hysterical fun! I believe the intention of this movie is mainly to spoof Hollywood, and self centered actors, and not so much Vietnam War pictures. There was some great humor in and throughout this movie. The fake trailers at the beginning were particularly memorable, so be sure to watch all of the trailers on the DVD, as they are mixed in with the real trailers.

Ben Stiller as the straight man is great, especially to Jack Black's freaking out. Robert Downey Jr. was unbelievably funny and over the top, even just the premise of his character's character is funny in and of itself.

Tropic Thunder is a bit similar to the premise of Galaxy Quest where the actors end up fighting in a "reality situation", the traditional fish out of water scenario. But whereas Galaxy Quest meant to spoof the genre, Tropic Thunder is poking fun at the film industry and the vanity of many actors. It is a fun movie well worth the rental fee.

Star Trek ?? - The Search for Spoof
4 January 2009
I am a fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek. Galaxy Quest is an excellent and fun spoof on Star Trek, and though not quite as clever as Spaceballs was to Star Wars, it is an enjoyable romp.

There is plenty of sarcasm as well as the fun generated from the "reality" that these former television stars end up in, as the aliens in need think the television broadcasts from Earth were meant to be historical recordings. Once recruited to fight a "real" galactic threat, the fun ensues as the actors now must really learn to pilot, fight, and repair their star ship. In the process of the film they make fun of Star Trek, primarily the TNG series, but also TOS; Sci-fi conventions; the geeks that attend these conventions; fan films; and sci-fi actors who rely on appearing at conventions to support themselves.

Galaxy Quest features an all star cast who perform beautifully, and never take themselves too seriously. The special FX are fun and appropriate, and the musical score is pretty good too. All in all it is an enjoyable film, especially if you are a sci-fi fan. If you are a Star Fleet uniform wearing, convention attending, NCC 1701D Specifications spouting, hardcore fan with a sense of humor, you will really appreciate this film. However if you're hardcore without a sense of humor, you would probably find this film highly offensive, in which case I'd suggest a slightly less offensive material from one of George Carlin's concerts.

Attack of the Snores

This is by far the "worst" of all of the Star Wars films (including the Animated Clone Wars Movie). I use the term worst lightly as it is an overall good film, it just doesn't hold up to the dramatic standards of the original trilogy or Phantom Menace.

I felt while watching this movie that the relationship between Anikin and Padme was not fully fleshed out, and I don't mean in the physical way. As both of these characters were fighting there training, expectations, and duties, neither seemed conflicted enough, nor was there sufficient tension established during their romantic development. This is reinforced when one watches the deleted scenes dealing with some of these issues. Obviously they were edited out for time, and perhaps their inherent sappy quality, but would have made their secret romance far more satisfying to the audience, and Padme's surrender to her feelings more fulfilling.

Outside of the lack of depth to the main character's romance, the film was excellent. The chase scene through the air space of Coruscant is just incredible, as is Yoda finally brandishing a lightsaber (if he had a meat cleaver instead, he could also double as a food processor). The special FX are incredible as always with ILM's work, as is John Williams' score. Overall an great movie, and as it is part of a trilogy/hexology, it is somewhat difficult to judge it all by itself.

Step Laughter

This was quite a funny movie. Of course the entire premise is utterly ridiculous, two "grown men" ages 39 and 40, still job-less, living with their parents? It seemed to me that these two guys acted like 9 year-olds, but that is what makes it funny. I think this movie was even funnier than Talladega Nights, Ferrell & Reilly's first collaboration.

There was a very thin and outrageous plot, but it lent itself to tons of improvisation, and in turn creating some of the ridiculous scenes, circumstances, and dialog. And seeing Mary Steenburgen curse like a sailor was hysterical. Ferrell and Reilly both play their characters to the hilt, as does Adam Scott, the evil younger brother, and his insane wife played by Kathryn Hahn. Overall there is an equal amount of slapstick, dialog, and potty humor (well okay, probably a bit heavier on the potty humor).

Though the movie itself is very hysterical, there are also some equally good bloopers, cut scenes, etc. on the DVD bonus materials. These are as hysterical as the movie was. I highly recommend renting the DVD and watching the extra features.
