Gran Hotel (2011–2013)

A little bit of everything
21 September 2014
Alicia, Julio, Teresa, Diego, Andres, Angela, Sofia, Alfredo, Inspector Ayala--these are some of the characters that will grab your attention, and hold it for the 42 episodes that are on Netflix. The Spanish subtitled series is filled with mystery, intrigue, suspense, and romance. The episodes take place in the early 20th century, at the luxurious "Gran Hotel", where the lives of the owners and employees are cleverly interwoven. The soap-opera style series is filled with overheard conversations that provoke suspicions and actions that make each 45 minute episode move quickly, and often end with a cliff-hanger, tempting you to quickly move on to the next one. There are so many coincidental overheard conversations, as the characters move through the corridors of the hotel, that you recognize the writers' tongue-in-cheek humor that is cleverly inserted, which makes for some lighter moments in the drama. Excellent acting, great period costumes, and interesting plot line will keep you involved with a great cast until the resounding finale. Watch them all--you'll love it

Inspector Coliandro (2003– )

Watch this Series
15 January 2012
He's not Inspector Clouseau, he's not Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld, he's not Columbo, but he is all 3 rolled into one. He's Giampaolo Morelli in the role of Inspector Coliandro. This Italian detective series is one the most entertaining TV shows you can view. Even if you don't like subtitles, this series will both amuse and intrigue you. Morelli plays a bumbling character that is struggling to get back to his job, as a detective, but is usually demoted to a supply clerk, or to the missing persons section. We are continually reminded that when he was in supply, he mistakenly ordered thousands of portions of yogurt. He always backs into an intriguing case, just by chance. He gets little respect from his superiors, but usually ends up inadvertently solving the case. The program is on MHZ networks, that brings several European mystery series to a PBS station in my area.

Funny Funerals with Fluff
20 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
A humorous voyage into the normally somber funeral business. It's easy watching, and even offers Blethyn & Molina stealing a scene from an old Fred & Ginger movie. Walken is over the top as a zealous competitor of Molina in the undertaking business, trying to bring a new style to an old Welsh town. We see a couple of very funny examples of the "new style". The plot thickens with Pugh having an affair with Watts, and her suggesting that they do Blethyn in. Meanwhile Molina has rekindled his long suffering romantic feeling for Blethyn, and convinces her to fake her death so that they can run away to the South Seas, and dance away their days together. During the "fake" funeral Blethyn learns of her husbands' infidelities and plots her revenge. Watch it for a view of what funerals probably should be--a celebration of life!
