Cars (2006)
Ka-chow!
Pixar had been celebrating 20 years after founding their company in 1986. In they have been making stories on toys, bugs, monsters, fish, and superheroes. The folks who made Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Monsters, Incorporated, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles, take us to win the big race in Cars. In the story, a hotshot red rookie race car named Lightning McQueen is living life in the fast line, and is excited to win his first Piston Cup trophy. At the final race of the season, he has tied for first place with his rivals, Strip Weathers professionally known as the King of Dinoco who has been winning the trophy seven times and is looking forward to retire, and Chick Hicks, The King's longtime rival, bent on winning by cheating his way to the top. A rematch is scheduled a week later in Los Angeles, California. Lightning wants to become the first car to reach the stadium and win the trophy. But on the way, he gets detoured on Route 66 and accidentally ruins the main road of a small run-down town on Route 66 called Radiator Springs. He gets sentenced to community service and repave the road. But while he does so, he begins to warm up to the town and makes friends with the folks of Radiator Springs: the local judge and medical doctor Doc Hudson, who holds a secret related to Lightning's racing, Sally Carrera, the town lawyer who becomes his new girlfriend, Tow Mater, a rusty, but trusty tow truck who becomes his best friend, Luigi and Guido, a duo of car from Italy, Flo, a 1960's show car and her detailed husband Ramone, Lizzie, the widow of the town's founder Stanley, a chill Volkswagen van named Fillmore, the town sheriff, a dutiful Army Jeep named Sarge, and Red, the town's local fire truck. They help Lightning realize there is more to life than racing and winning. Cars is not about racing, it's about the journey and the long road ahead on Route 66, and shows the heart and charm of the American road.
The Incredibles (2004)
Incredible!
Toys, bugs, monsters, fish. These are the great stories Pixar has told. This one is like a comic book, but it shows family, working together and saving the day. The Incredibles is no exception. In this story, the famous superhero Mr. Incredible, is always saving the day by using his superhuman strength to protect Municiberg from the dark forces of evil, with his super-stretchy wife Elastigirl and his best pal, the literally super cool Frozone, who can shoot ice and snow from his hands. But one tragic day, superheroes are not allowed to use their powers in public, because they cause too much damage to the city. The government sues and bans superheroes and forces them to retirement and puts them in the Superhero Relocation Program, which superheroes hide the powers and are deemed illegal, and have to fit in with society. 15 years later, Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl now have settled in society. They now have three kids, a daughter named Violet, who can turn invisible and project force fields, and two sons, the oldest son is a hyperactive 10 year old boy, named Dash and the youngest is a baby named Jack-Jack. Though he loves his family, Mr. Incredible has become depressed and lonely with not being able to save the day and hates working as an insurance adjuster. One day, he is called in to action by a mysterious communication, which sends him to a remote island. A spy named Mirage has given him a top secret mission to fight a savage robot called the Omnidroid. Mr. Incredible successfully defeats the robot and feels like a new man. He even has new costumes for his family, designed by his old friend, Edna Mode. During his next assignment, Mr. Incredible discovers Mirage is working for Buddy Pine, a disaffected number one fan of Mr. Incredible, whom he had rejected as a sidekick, Incrediboy. He has adopted the supervillain alias "Syndrome". He is intending to send his Omnidroid killing machine to Municiberg to destroy all superheroes and rule the world. And so it is up to the Incredibles to save the city and work together as a family. The Incredibles, as the name implies, is very incredible, with jazzy music from Michael Giacchino, amazing direction from Brad Bird, the voice of Edna Mode, and the story is done brilliantly by Brad. Good luck saving the world, Incredibles!
Toy Story 2 (1999)
The second chapter in Woody's life
Toy Story 1 is the origin of Woody's life story. Pixar bought back the lovable toys from their first movie to the world's first computer animated sequel. Andy has left for Cowboy Camp, leaving the toys to their own devices. Unfortunately, when Woody rescues his fellow toy, asthmatic squeeze toy penguin Wheezy, he is unexpectedly taken from Andy's home and ends up in the apartment of an eager toy store owner who has a collection of cowboy toys from a 1950's television show called "Woody's Roundup", and the toys are his fellow stars, Jessie, the yodeling cowgirl, Bullseye, who is his trusty horse, and the old prospector, Stinky Pete. Most of the toys are excited on a world tour to Tokyo, Japan, but Woody just wants to go home. Meanwhile, Buzz and company set out to find Woody and bring him back home. This sequel is more characters, more story, more music, brings the emotion spirit of Toy Story. And for the first time, Buzz has a duplicate.
A Bug's Life (1998)
A small, small world by Pixar
Even though we sometimes forget about this movie, A Bug's Life is a big story with small characters. This cute little movie by Pixar tells the story of Flik, an ant who lives in a colony of ants called Ant Island. From our view, it's just a field of grass and a tree in the center. But to the ants, it's their home. They are constantly struggling for survival, collecting food for the winter. Sometimes a gang of bullying grasshoppers, led by this big ruthless bully named Hopper, tries to steal the food, but the ant colony outnumber them and as always, the ants usually eat the foods they have for themselves. One summer, the Ant Queen and her daughter, Ant Princess Atta are tired of being constantly bullied by the grasshoppers. They send Flik off on a grand quest to search for the greatest warriors of all of bugdom. On his grand adventure, Flik hires an out of business circus troupe: the clowns, Slim, the stick bug who has been used a prop as a clown, Heimlich, a VERY hungry caterpillar with a thick German accent, Francis, a male ladybug with a very short temper who hates being constantly mistaken for a female, the lion taming act Dim, a gentle rhino beetle and Rosie, his caring lion taming black spider, the magicians Manto the Magnificent, a praying mantis and his lovely assistant, Gypsy Moth, and the pill bug acrobats from Hungary, Tuck and Roll. They are given the job as warriors, but things don't go according to plan, but Flik must rally the circus bugs and his fellow ants, including his best friend Princess Dot, young sister of Atta, to fight the grasshoppers and have food for winter. This movie is very adorable, with heroic music, cute characters (the good and the bad), and a fun story. It even includes a bunch of funny outtakes in the end credits, one of which includes Sheriff Woody from Toy Story, Pixar's first adventure.
