This was a well-researched, scientific and thought-provoking piece on transgender rights. Honestly, it is disgusting that this episode is the lowest rated episode of Last Week Tonight, ever. Just goes to show why we still need Pride and allies. Transphobia is alive and well. Look, I get that things you don't understand are scary. But blind hate and ignorance are not the way to go when there are real human beings that are hurt by your opinions and comments. Just spare a thought for the person that watches this, thinks 'wow, this episode perfect, I can use this piece to explain to my mom why I need gender-affirming care' and then realizing that this is John Oliver's least well received "take". Shame.
He was Scandinavian with a Scandinavian accent. The Finnish people look and sound completely different, if they wanted a Scandinavian guy why wasn't the whole business with like Sweden or Denmark or something? I know there aren't a huge number of established Finnish actors but they could have tried to get one or have the Scandinavian guy learn an accent, he is supposed to be an actor after all. Otherwise, great episode, but as a Finn, very frustrating.
The L in the LGBT+ is severely underrepresented in media, at least compared to the G and B. We have several gay men and bi women in shows and movies, never enough though because it's not proportionate to the amount of LGBT people there are. Still, even in the little space we have demanded to represented in on tv, it is mostly about relationships between two men or a woman that has men AND women as partners. I am so happy to have a well-made, interesting quality tv show with a lesbian as the main character. The only reason I didn't give full 10 stars is because it is hard to root for a Tory, someone who, already in the first episode so I don't consider this a spoiler, goes around collecting rent from poor, working people and plans to mine and/or sell coal. I know, it's historically accurate and if she wasn't rich and highborn she wouldn't have been able to be like she was, but still, it just feels wrong.
