Fantasy Island (2021)
It's alright, but it just feels too weird for me.
I admit that I never watched the original version of the show, and this review is based on watching one episode of this version.
I like a variety of the characters, and appreciate that the plot lines are relatable; one lady has been bullied for weight, another lady is nearing the end of her life. It's interesting to see how these lives can be changed by one weekend on a magical island. However, I feel like there's not enough time to get to know them. Especially with the news anchor's plot line; I enjoyed feeling how happy she was when she finally got to eat what she wanted, but then having the backstory of the (step?) father was just utterly depressing and ruined the episode for me. I do appreciate that we'll be able to see more of Ruby, though.
I think the main thing causing my unappreciation of the work is that it jumps around too much. We have a lot going on at once, but it doesn't feel like any of it works very well together.
A lot of the acting was good, and I appreciate the host's natural talent in the position.
I will continue watching it, I think. But I hope the writers manage to tighten up the storytelling.
