A wicked tale of exaggerated non fiction
The film's best aspects - THE GORE. I am a medical professional and work emergency medicine, so let me say first hand this gore is next level. So much so I'm skeptical how it is created morally...
To be quite blunt, I believe MD uses animal carcasses to film and manipulates these to resemble humans moreso.
The good - the ability to disturb the viewer. Amongst the divine homosexually unappealing nature and over the top "awkward" individual personality this movie digs deep. The plot (although small) drags on appropriately to ensure your mind is unable to escape what it is seeing. Some may find this "boring, slow, unnecessary" but I ensure you this director knows what he is doing; and he does it well.
The bad - quite frankly for the genre there isn't much bad. If your here as a result of any other pieces of his work (MDE / Voyage etc) you know what your getting into and this movie offers a decent plot in addition to expected content. If not you'll hate this movie as it DOES NOT appeal to "Hollywood horror" fans.
Overall 7/10 would recommend to the few true horror fans. Family and friends not so much.
Reise nach Agatis (2010)
A nice flick for the whole family
To review this movie, I would like to break from the typical mundane style, and simply put this into pros and cons.
Pros: The movie had a decent plot, especially for a M. Dora film, typically his movies focus so strongly on their arthouse style and gore they lack a strong plot. THE GORE, I have worked as a Paramedic for 4 years and NOBDOY gets the gore right like this guy, I am literally convinced there is something more sinister to it. Quite curious who the makeup / effects team is because they do an outstanding job... or well...
Cons: Movie does feel a bit slow; I feel there were some character holes with behavior clashing with expressions and what the viewer is deliberately led to believe. And that's about all I can find, the movie was overall quite good without any major flaws.
This is likely my favorite of Dora's films, and it should go without say this movie is a bit on the "extreme" side. Though not nearly as much as some other films by the director (MDE). I would actually recommend this one to a variety of horror film fans without feeling I have led them astray! 7/10
Portraits of Andrea Palmer (2018)
Murky grimy filth, which we call reality
**** CLEARLY NOT FOR EVERYONE ****
This movie better defines "torture porn". Yet it holds merit for those few of us looking for something different.
Portraits of Andrea Palmer is an 74minute ride, passing through a life afflicted by depression, pain, and misery. The film puts another perspective upon what we all have become to know as a normal aspect of life, of which we walk past daily without ever thinking twice about. Witness what this "normal life" may entail behind the fake smiles and makeup. This movie is grime. I would dare to say some scenery and images compete with those of Saló, 120 Days of Sodom. The film holds nothing back when reaching towards its goal of ugliness.
What started as watching our protagonist's day to day life quickly fades to a much darker place as she sinks lower and lower. Early scenery captures the concept perfectly with blotchy black and white video effects, breaking only for self inflicted gore images. By the end the world has consumed what bit of individualism she had and you're left with a defeated zombie.
Without ruining much more of the "plot" I will stop there, though I feel the need to warn readers this movie is beyond the point of "questionably extreme". In addition the overall plot lacks a depth which would typically be desirable when watching these sorts of movies.
Rating 5/10, average.
Gore/Disturbing scenery 7/10 Acting 9/10 Plot 3.5/10 (60% of the film is a porno) Camera quality / sound effects 6/10
Unique art-house take on a genre not flooded with unoriginal content. Yet, kind of boring.
Eden Lake (2008)
Let me add one thing
This woman was WAY to nice. I mean, her fiancé dies and she politely asks a random child for his phone? She only wants to escape and not go I Spit on Your Grave on these children??? -1 score
Besides this The gore was phenomenal (Not over the top for once), the plot was wonderful (adding something original to an already cluttered genre), the ability to captivate was astounding. The directors and cast truly enveloped the viewer and took them on an emotional roller coaster.
With that being said, this may not be the movie for everyone. The movie is definitely closer to the extreme genre than the Hollywood.
Subconscious Cruelty (2000)
Desecration & Demoralization from a poet.
The movie is poetic. Much of the scenery is cleverly chosen and represents imagery related to creation and the mockery of this world (or more so human nature). Opinions will vary, but to me this justifies the brutal "extreme" nature of the film, something many others lack. It helps that the imagination is not all which is utilized to find purpose in the atrocities taking place On screen, instead your offered a guide who narrates his own thoughts and concepts has he creates these acts of desecration. His acts of self perceived ultimate trauma.
Cons: there is a major lack of plot going on. Also quite boring at certain points (ie 15+ minutes of people having sex with the bleeding earth) Pros: this lack of plot is further depiction of human nature. Also the gore was very high quality and believable.
Going With a 7, but it can be easily understood how many are tempted to rate this a 3 or lower. Not the genre for everyone.
Pieces of Talent (2014)
How could they have done better?
To see this title amongst some rather "Extreme" horror films is quite surprising, I feel this movie is the perfect cross of an acceptable Hollywood horror and an extreme horror flick.
The plot was essentially "Creep", but taken to a much further extent, appropriately. In addition, it seemed infinitely more accurate. The acting was superb and even more believable when an "average appearance" actor and actress are chosen for the roles, instead of our standard sculpted from stone cast.
I had a difficult time choosing between an 8 or 9, until the dog lived. BOOM nothing was done wrong. If your looking for a movie that you can watch with a gf, bf, horror loving spouse this is it. If your looking for a movie to watch with a group of friends or all alone, this is it.
9/10 Will watch again.
A Perfect Child of Satan (2012)
It's Valentine alright.
The first half of the short film was basically an audiobook you could listen to for the exact same effect.
The second half is edited so significantly it's painfully obviously just hiding a low budget's attempt at snuff. HOWEVER the film has some shock quality and didn't bore me. I wish more movies would cut themselves to 25 minutes and not include all the zZz material.
Cross a 10/10 with a 3/10 and what do you get
So much hate and disgust amongst reviews and comments. The quality of this film's gore is beautiful, so much so it's actually unrealistic. To truly cause trauma you must be more realistic, this film got so carried away (I've been a Paramedic for most my life, believe me nobody bleeds this much). The acting was sound, camera quality was great, lighting did justice in all aspects, clearly the "quality" of the film was excellent.
Where the film fell short There is literally no plot. In 5 sentences (or less) I could explain everything that the film depicts / offers. When a film goes through the effort to cross as many lines as this, and dares to approach certain taboos, a purpose is quite necessary. After an hour I found myself checking how much time was left becusae I was bored. (Though I am left wondering, did the director actually expose an infant to the graphic scenery/treatment that was depicted? Movie or not, those cries seemed quite authentic.) Also the music production team couldn't have done a worse job.
If you went through the trouble of seeking this out, as I did, you must be a fan of extreme horror. Which this film certainly is. If this isn't your style, go back to your Hollywood horror or another genre you can stomach. But really, with the cover artwork and plot as described, what did you expect?
This movie doesn't really deserve a long review. The acting and effects were very poor, even for 1990s, good gore effects are pretty important in a "snuff film" wannabe. The plot was also very choppy and unrealistic. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for an "extreme" horror movie. Or honestly even a horror movie in general.
The Acid Sorcerer (2017)
Good idea, mediocre execution.
Clearly a "starter up" film for a new producer on a low budget. To truly rate this film you must try your best to look past that fact, and towards unbiased judgmental responses.
The plot to the film is decent, it attempted to follow multiple persons and I did feel there was great potential in following a drug addict w/ schizophrenia, or DID or whatever. The directness Of the plot was likely one of the best features (name introduction followed by features), but then the film began to go downhill. A story wasn't overtly prevalent and certainly failed to intrigue a viewer. In addition the black & white fell short of what it was meant to add to the film (also being an obvious coverup for poor visual effects and acting). Finally, I couldn't stand the music. I love a film which uses upbeat music at completely inappropriate times, or vice versa. This puts one's senses on alarm and can add confusion, but this films miss matched music certainly did not possess this ability. 4/10 for good effort and potential in future movies.
Red Room (2017)
Far to in between
I am unsure who this film is targeting for appeal. On one side, you've a film certainly leaning towards the "extreme" side of things. Yet it lacks the story to truly pull the viewer into its timidly taboo nature. on the other side, our "Hollywood horror" fans may also find this unappealing because it does cross boundaries the majority of films do not.
What you are left with is a mediocre film that has been done before, without adding anything to the genre.
5/10 because the acting was decent, a loose plot did exist despite initial feelings of the film, and the quality of gore / props was decent.
Einstein's God Model (2016)
As a medical provider and physics student
I would like to start this with a few credentials I am an ex-Paramedic and current bachelors or Physics / Chemistry student. This movie is very interesting. No, the effects are not top notch nor is the acting. However, the movie does a fantastic job at mixing factual knowledge we know about particle physics (of which they over used the word "quantum" like all Hollywood movies) and theoretical physics.
*** It is important to note string theory and quantum entanglement are not proven to be factual entirely. ***
But to even attempt the subject and come up with a film that makes sense to most viewers takes extreme talent. No easy task. I'm curious where the directors / producers obtained their props. The ET tubes, propofol, magnetic field sims, micro transformers were all real (or at least so close to it I could tell no difference). Some of these things are very impossible to come by outside of an anesthesia related field.
Overall Im thoroughly impressed with the film.
Will likely watch it again, though I do not feel it fair that one requires 6+ years of difficult education to comprehend the premise well.
Srpski film (2010)
The top review basically said it all, we all found ourselves watching this for the same reason. This movie is ****** up, but lets add a review people haven't talked about.
If you aren't here to "prove your a big enough man to watch this" or to "cross the most extreme movie of all time off my watch list", then you may appreciate this for it's beauty and aesthetic artwork.
The first time I watched the film, I like many others did not enjoy this. The second time I realized why I didn't like it, it got to me. It was shot well, the camera never strays away from what is happening on screen and often the entire background is black, there is nowhere for your eyes to escape to. This may have been the very factor that made me want to watch it again, you are stuck watching the pure ugly truth, nothing held back. The third time I watched this I realized the film has a well written unique story, it's ugly, taboo, depraved, powerful, and captures this heinous world we live in.
I have worked as a Paramedic for several years and feel this movie is exceptionally intoxicating. I have seen things I wish I hadn't during the course of my career, this movie gives the viewer the ability to look into these deep dark places on Earth, just like many of us have.
The Battery (2012)
You may like it more than I did
Forewarning *WITHOUT SPOILERS* this movie is very slow burning, the plot seems to aimlessly drift off into nowhere throughout the film and lead nowhere.
Yet, the film wasn't terrible. To tackle the zombie genre, which has been milked for every penny you could possible get out of it, and still produce a decent film takes talent. The main characters are also very relatable and lovable, while not breaking from a character you enjoy watching on a big screen. I would not watch this title again, though I do acknowledge it is very unique in its approach.
If you are like me and found this film alongside titles such as "Irreversible", "A Serbian Film", and "The Angels' Melanchlia" you will likely be dissapointed. This film is slow burning, yet offers a good story.
This film does have a dark side, and has been produced in an artistically dark manner. Between the stringy orchestras, strangely behaved townfolk, and mysterious protag. it is appealing in a creepy sort of way. But. unfortunately I feel it falls into the category of not "Extreme" but yet not "Hollywood horror" leaving it a smaller window of individuals who truly appreciate the film. Regardless, the plot is unique and though it has been done before this movie adds to the genre. 7/10, well done Bulgium.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019)
It's rather rare I feel the need to write a review but here I am. This movie is so extraordinarily average it's crazy, it's the 5 of all 5s.
Attractive girls mid 20s acting like typical movie high school girls. The least original premise of all time. Terrible CGI somehow, seeing the movie had a crazy high budget. And the atrocity of ignoring all physics. Water is a terrible medium, and somehow these girls talk to one another through scuba masks, with their ears exposed to water?? Ok. Many issues.
Solid pick for anyone letting their 13 year olds watch a "horror" movie at a sleep over. Nothing more. I enjoyed the original 47 meters down. This seemed to be nothing more than a cash grab.
Melancholie der Engel (2009)
Wannabe Serbian Film
This movie is as though a lesser talented director took a shot at breaking every taboo boundary that exists. Unfortunately, even with English subs the overall story lacks significantly (if it exists at all). Instead, you are left with a long movie collage of ramblings and animal torture, disturbing , and images of corpses littered around religious monuments with no true background or context. "Extreme" movie done poorly.
