- "When I Grow Up" is an uncharacteristically modest film from producer Sam Spiegel (during his "S. P. Eagle" years). Bobby Driscoll plays a young boy who feels neglected and misunderstood at home. Preparing to run away, Bobby chances across an old diary once kept by his grandfather (Charley Grapewin). Leafing through the yellowed pages, Bobby discovers that grandpa went through many of the same childhood travails that Bobby is enduring at that moment--and look how well gramps turned out! Armed with a renewed understanding of (and appreciation for) his elders, Bobby decides to stick around for a while and see how things develop.
- Phyllis Wilson (Laura Lee) returns to the lumber camp owned by her father, Henry Wilson (Sam Flint)), and finds him in a struggle to keep his holdings. Wilson's foreman, McCabe (George Slocum), is employed by Wilson's enemy to destroy his company. Jim Caldwell (David Bruce), an engineer, is hired by Wilson and falls in love with Phyllis. McCabe kills Wilson and Sheriff Williams (Lee Phelps) thinks Caldwell is the killer.
- From her hospital bed a woman recounts her life as a "plain Jane" while awaiting plastic surgeries for the injuries she has sustained in an automobile accident.
- Tex Kinnane (Jock Mahoney as Jock O'Mahoney), posing as a stage driver, goes to Australia to investigate a series of robberies at Goldstar. He makes friends at the saloon with Baldy Muldoon (Alex Kellaway) and barmaid Stella Grey (Veda Ann Borg). Lawyer Vincent Moller (Douglass Dumbrille), the leader behind the robberies, learns Tex's real identity, and frames a plot to blame the crimes on Tex.
- In 14th Century Sweden, when Lorld Erland Maneskold marries Singoalla, a gypsy, he abandons his worldly possessions. The gypsies, who meanwhile have stolen the Maneskold treasure, want the couple to join their caravan to escape detection. A jealous suitor makes Erland think Singoalla has betrayed him, and he returns to his castle, where a battle between the gypsies and the landed-gentry ensues. Ten years later, Sorgbarn, the son born to Singoalla from the brief marriage sets out to find his father Erland. He does and tries to bring his parents together. He succeeds briefly, but is hurt in an accident and dies. Erland's mind snaps when Singoalla is killed by a vindictive gypsy and he retires to his castle, demented and alone.

The other is determined to create a 'faked' version of a perfect crime he intends to commit when an ex-convict visits them. They are both in love with their shared-stenographer-secretary.
- While casing a bank he intends to rob, tough gangster Leo L'Americano (Robert Beatty) discovers that Antonio Pellegrini (Robert Beatty), a meek and mild clerk in the bank, is his exact double. Leo kidnaps Antonio and robs the bank, making certain there are plenty of witnesses to testify that Antonio was the bank robber. But Leo hadn't accounted for the involvement of Antonio's wife Dorothy (Jean Kent).

- The town of Buttonhole Bend is in the clutches of the Butcher Baer (Max Baer) gang who have killed every sheriff and robbed every bank in the territory. The brains behind the gang is saloon owner Square Deal Sal9Hillary Brooke). Skipalong Rosenbloom (Maxie Rosenbloom) comes to town and is tricked into becoming the sheriff. He falls in love with Miss Caroline Witherspoon(Jacqueline Fontaine), the town schoolmar'm. Skipalong finally corners Butcher in Square Deal Sal's saloon, beats him up and corrals the rest of the gang.
- When Queenie Hart brings her cattle to a lawless town be sold, town boss Drake gets the Cattle Inspector to declare them infected. To fight back, Queenie's foreman Bill gets the Warden to release three prisoners into his custody. With women now able to vote, Queenie gets them to elect Bill Sheriff. They are now ready to take on Drake and his men but one of the prisoners is a double-crosser.
