- A mad killer is on the loose in a hotel on a dark, gloomy night.

The neglected Worthington children seek their parents attention and affection, as they witness the normal family life of next-door neighbor Thomas Scott, John's lawyer and closest friend. When Freddie and Marion bring home an abandoned dog, the two are sent to bed early. With both their parents away for the evening, the two sneak out of bed to play hide and seek. Marion, searching for Freddie, falls down the dumbwaiter and is seriously injured. The two parents rush home, and each blames the other for the child's injury. Edith, claiming that John is neglecting her as well as the children, files for divorce. Following their parents, divorce, Freddie and Marion are split up, with Freddie living with John while Marion leaves with Edith. Years later, John has fulfilled his dream of a great railroad empire, but is faced with two dilemmas: his workers are threatening to strike and Freddie has been thrown out of yet another college. John manages to break his workers' union, but Freddie tells his father that he would rather be disinherited than become a mirror of his father. With the help of his girl friend, blues singer Gale Adams, Freddie gets a job as a singing piano player in a small family restaurant. Meanwhile, Marion has led a similarly rebellious life. After Edith informs her that she is going off on a European vacation, Marion disowns her mother, goes to a wild cocktail party, and impulsively marries Roy Daniels. When Daniels is arrested on their wedding night for jewel theft, Marion is arrested as an accessory and spends one year in prison. Released from prison, Marion is unable to find work and contemplates suicide when she is evicted from her apartment. Her next-door neighbor, Elsie, takes her out to dinner, to the restaurant where Freddie works. When Roy enters the restaurant, Elsie, one of his jilted lovers, re-introduces him to his wife. Marion refuses to have anything to do with Roy, and when the thief tries to get rough with her, Freddie comes to her aid. Later, Marion tries to commit suicide by slipping pills into her drink, but Freddie stops her, and the two discover they are brother and sister. They go back to Marion's apartment, but their happy reunion is interrupted by the reappearance of Roy. When Roy and Freddie fight, a gun goes off and Roy is killed. Both Marion and Freddie are placed on trial for murder, and their two parents are reconciled in light of this family tragedy. Gale, convinced that Marion and Freddie are innocent, goes to Elsie and pretends to blackmail her, stating that she saw Elsie shoot Roy. Elsie then admits that Roy's partner, Shelby, was the real murderer. With their names cleared, the Worthingtons all return to their old home. Finally a happy family, Marion and Freddie ask their parents to take them to the zoo, something they had always been too busy before to do.

- John Kent (Monte Blue') wins the Olympic decathlon but is disqualified on a charge of professionalism. William Stevens (Kenneth Harlan), the second-place finisher, is awarded the title and trophies. Six years later Kent is running a moving truck for a living and training his young son Johnny (Bruce Bennett) to become an athlete. Chance brings about a meeting between Ken and Stevens, now a prosperous business man, with a little daughter, Joan (Joan Fontaine), who makes friends with young Johnny. As the years pass, the grown-up Johnny has developed to where he stands a chance of becoming an Olympic athlete and is in love with Joan. Mr. Stevens also wants to see Johnny succeed, and is annoyed that his attention to Joan may interfere with his training. Rich girl Patricia Stanley (Suzanne Kaaren) is also interested in Johnny, a proceeding which suits wealthy young athlete Duke Hale (Reed Howes), who is Johnny's main rival in sports and for Joan. Stevens, in an effort to repay the elder Kent for the wrong done him in stripping him of his rightful Olympic title, makes Johnny a member of the athletic club that sponsors the preliminary track-and-field events leading to the choosing of the American team for the Olympic Games. Johnny wins first place in the initial trials and is carried away by the flattery of the social set, which leads to a quarrel and separation from his father. At a party given by Patricia, Johnny drinks heavily, and Joan, feeling she is partly to blame for Johnny breaking his training, tells him she is through if him, hoping to bring him to his senses.
- Ex-outlaw Tim Mallory is looking for the killer of his friend Chuck. Having thwarted a robbery attempt by one of his old gang members he is made a Deputy. He finds Houger who he believes is the killer and starts cleaning up his town. When an old gang member arrives and exposes him, he is arrested. But before being taken to jail, he sees Houger is wearing Chuck's watch.
- To prevent a lynching, Ranger Tim lets two outlaws go saying he will get them later. This gets him kicked out of the Rangers and he goes across the border and joins Big George's gang who are running contraband. But the outlaw Jimmy overhears Tim tell his sister that the dismissal was a fake. Big George and his gang then go after Tim and trap him in a cabin.
- Merwin hires Barton to fight Welsh, but when Barton arrives in town, Welsh mistakes him for the hired killer Single-Shot Smith. Figuring he can help Merwin by being part of Welsh's gang he hires on as Single-Shot. But soon the real Single-Shot appears.
- Captain John Kent is a pilot in charge of the border patrol. Two crooks who head up a smuggling operation, Morley and his associate Faber, are trying to outwit Kent. The smugglers hope that they can influence Kent's younger brother Doug to help them, and they employ an attractive singer in an attempt to win Doug over.
- Evans and Walton have started a range war causing rancher Morgan to send for the reputed killer Tim Corwin. Walton then frames Tim for the murder of Morgan. When Tim escapes the Sheriff, Evans and Walton set Tim up to be murdered. But Morgan's son Buddy overhears their plans and rides to warn Tim.
- Famous criminal lawyer Lester Owens wins the release of his client, Eddie Geller, when Geller's trial ends with a deadlocked jury. A short time later, Vince "Lanny" Landers, F.B.I. Special Agent K-7, returns home from a trip to Europe and is greeted by reporter Olive O'Day, who jokingly tries to convince him to tell her the real story behind his trip. Even though he wants to retire, Landers has agreed to help the F.B.I. crack down on organized crime. After Kennedy, one of Geller's jurors, is found dead with $500 in his pocket, Adams, Landers' supervisor, asks him to find Geller's boss. Hoping to question Geller, Landers accepts Olive's invitation to a party in honor of her and her fiance, Billy Westrop, which Owens is giving that evening at Geller's nightclub. At the club, Landers warns Geller that he will eventually go to jail and suggests that he testify against his boss in exchange for a lighter sentence. During the evening, Geller and Tony Black quarrel over Peppy, a singer who is in love with Tony; Silky Samuels demands payoff money from Geller for fixing the jury; Schmidt, a gambler, accuses Geller of running a crooked game; and Geller demands that Billy pay his gambling debt. Later, when Geller is found dead, all the men become suspects. Olive convinces her newspaper to allow her to follow the story. She recognizes one of Geller's busboys from Geller's trial and tells Landers, who questions him and learns that Geller murdered his father. Olive and Billy get married, but after Tony is found murdered and the police identify Billy's fingerprints on the murder weapon, he is arrested. To help the couple, Landers questions the remaining suspects and Owens agrees to defend Billy. At Billy's trial, Owens uncharacteristically fumbles the defense. Landers then testifies that the fingerprints on the gun were forgeries and forces Owens to admit that he committed the murders and framed Billy because he was in love with Olive. Landers suspicions were aroused when he learned that Owens was an accomplished engraver and thus was capable of forging Billy's fingerprints on the murder weapon.
- Mary Bradley leaves her family's farm in Cloverdale, Kentucky to visit her brother Johnny, a jockey, in San Francisco. Their reunion is interrupted by Harry Johnson, who tries to convince Johnny to ride in the illegal race at the Pagona fair. After Mary and Johnny learn that the colt Mary brought to California to sell has broken a leg, Johnny agrees to go along with Harry's scheme. After Harry is shot, Johnny is arrested on the belief that he wanted to stop Harry from blackmailing him. Although he is innocent, Johnny agrees to a plea bargain under the alias Barnsdale so that he will not disgrace his family. A reporter, Marty Marion, who is investigating the racetrack rackets, helps Johnny obtain a work release. Meanwhile in Kentucky, Mary prepares to enter her horse, Blue Streak, in the Kentucky Derby. With the family farm already heavily mortgaged, Mary appeals to District Attorney Barton Pierce to pay the race entrance fee. Johnny reads about the approaching Derby and escapes prison to attend the race, but Marty has anticipated Johnny's reaction. In Kentucky, Marty gains admittance to a Derby ball, and when Barton sees Marty with Mary, he becomes jealous. Later, to increase his horse's odds, Barton spreads a rumor that Johnny will be his jockey for the Derby, but plans to have him arrested before the race begins. On the day of the race, Marty discovers Barton's scheme and is able to stop him. Johnny rides Blue Streak to a first-place finish, and Marty shows him a telegram sent from California. Harry's murderer has confessed, and Marty tells Johnny he may keep the telegram as the first memento from his future brother-in-law.
- G-Man Ted Riley (Lloyd Hughes ) is ordered to investigate happenings at Diamond Island, where a bogus Major Gray (Grant Withers) is reported engaged in manufacturing a new brand of secret gas for his own purposes. Riley blows up his motor boat just off the island and is picked up by Gray's men. On the island he discovers chemist Professor Baker (John Cowell) and his daughter, Anne (Marion Burns), are held captive by Major Gray.
