- Stephen Verrill dies, leaving the deed to a valuable gold mine to his wife and child. Verrill's widow, planning to establish a company to operate the mine, sails aboard the steamer Caribee bound for New York. With the aid of Allen, the mate, Cuttle, a notorious trader, scuttles the ship on a wild coastline. As the lifeboat drifts towards a small island, it is overturned by a giant octopus, and the baby is washed ashore, the mine deed tied to her neck. As Verrill apparently has no heirs, his property reverts back to the state and Cuttle buys it. Ten years later, Tom Ross, the son of the Caribee 's captain, determines to prove his father's innocence and returns to the South Sea island where he finds Mimi Verrill, now grown to adulthood. After obtaining proof of his father's murder, Tom returns home with Mimi where they fight to reclaim the mine. After many arduous confrontations with Cuttle, the villain is devoured by a shark, Mimi regains her claim to the mine and marries Tom.
- As the government of Alpania, a seaside European republic, is threatened by revolutionary monarchists, three American adventurers--Jack Perry, Dick Sayre, and Lyn Brook--arrive in the country and immediately become embroiled in the civil strife. Perry offends the monarchists, who capture him and sentence him to death before a firing squad. Brook rescues his compatriot by bombing the complex, thus killing Perry's captors. Disguised as a woman, Perry infiltrates the royalists' circle where as "Fedora" he quickly becomes a court favorite and earns the love of Zana, an Alpanian woman. While Perry carries news of the monarchists' plot to the republicans, Brook, donning feminine attire and calling himself "Thelma," diverts Grand Duke Nebo. Perry is recaptured, but commandeers an enemy airplane to safety. After an automobile chase, Perry eludes the revolutionaries and escapes to America with Zana.
- A hypnotic Svengali controls the singing voice of a young starlet, but he cannot control her heart.
- Shelby Carter, owner of big chemical works, whose secret formula are being stolen and given to his competitors abroad, is driven by fear from his secret observation tower and killed by the mysterious 'Avion." His daughter, Anita, despite the protests of her fiancé, Lester Mason, calls in Craig Kennedy to solve the mystery of the death of her father and of the missing formula.
- Jim McDonald, the foreman of a shipbuilding plant and head of the labor union, strives to combat the anarchistic propaganda being put forth by Klimoff, the leader of a Bolshevik gang whose goal is to disrupt the country with strikes and anarchy. Despite McDonald's efforts, a strike is called, resulting in chaos. McDonald's child is knocked down by runaway horses abandoned by their striking driver, and dies. Mob scenes take place in America, as well as in Russia. Eventually, the unrest is quelled with an armistice called between Capital and Labor for a year, during which time wages are to be increased to reflect the cost of living, and leaders are to work out a common plan for their mutual advantage. The strikers now realize that they have been pawns of the Bolsheviks and call off the strike, agreeing to the plan.
- Bradford Vinton falls in love with a girl singer from the slums, but his father made plans to break the friendship.When his plans fail he disinherit his son. One day Bradford is stabbed by Merney Stagg and needs a blood transfusion. Sylvia, the girl,comes to his rescue and Bradfirds father realizes her Love for Bradford and consents to their marriage.
- After Enid and Jack Radnor, vacationing in the Virginia mountains, have a bitter quarrel, Enid meets Polly Mason and Martin Hale, who invite her to their cabin. There she discovers that something mysterious is happening in the mountains. When a train robbery occurs, the sheriff, believing that Martin is a member of the outlaw gang, demands his surrender. After many misadventures, Martin finally proves his innocence. Then Enid mysteriously disappears and is found unconscious at the edge of a cliff. Enid's mother comes to resolve her problems and recognizes Polly's father as an old sweetheart who quarreled with her many years before. Finally, Enid and Jack, after observing so many romantic separations, realize their deep love and are reconciled.

- Steel millionaire John Blake buys the auctioned estate of the formerly wealthy Fairchilds to avenge his father, once the Fairchild's gardener, who died after being dismissed because John thrashed Andrew Whipple, a guest who tormented him. When John learns that Fairchild secretly paid for his education, he tries to repay him, but the proud Fairchild refuses. John marries Fairchild's daughter Eleanor, with whom he is infatuated, so that Fairchild can benefit, although Eleanor marries only for the half-million dollars involved. After Whipple returns and pursues Eleanor, John offers her a divorce if she will sign the money over to her father. When Whipple makes her suspect that John loves a young widow, Eleanor writes a note of farewell and leaves, but she is stopped by Whipple, who wanting to elope, embraces her. When John sees this and fights Whipple, Eleanor shields John from a bullet and is wounded. She recovers, and, learning that John loves her, declares her love.
- A man who has been imprisoned for implication in the manufacture of counterfeit money is totally blind when released from prison. His little daughter, through the kindness of Detective Arnold, comes to meet him at the prison gate, and becomes her father's helper at the news stand, where he is placed by Detective Arnold. Through his friendship for the little girl and her father, the detective is able to trace the gang of counterfeiters when they negotiate for the Harrison plate, the whereabouts of which is known only to the released convict.
- A French orphan girl is adopted by a wealthy British nobleman. The family lives happily, unaware that a plot is afoot to kidnap the girl and make away with the nobleman's fortune.
- When thief Frederick Thurston returns from abroad with a stolen blue pearl, he sells the jewel to Holland Webb, a gigolo living off the funds of his wealthy wife Laura. Holland then presents the pearl to his mistress Sybil Trent, who wears it to a reception hosted by the Webbs. Thurston is also in attendance and is planning to reclaim the pearl. During the course of the party, the lights are extinguished, and when the electricity is restored, Sybil discovers that her gem is missing. When Police Commissioner Richard Drake is called in to solve the crime, Laura, who is aware of her husband's infidelity, confesses to him that she stole the jewel as evidence in a divorce suit against her husband. Laura and Webb are divorced, and she falls in love with Drake.
- Ranch foreman Kerry has boarded with Kitty Tynan and her mother for five years in western Canada, his past is a mystery to everyone. He is actually an English aristocrat who lost all his money gambling and left the country in search of work. Kerry and his friend Horan own an option on property which crooked lawyer Burlingame is trying to secure. Burlingame's cohort Logan murders Hogan, and is caught and arrested. In the trial, Burlingame forces Kerry to admit his past, and succeeds in preventing Kerry from receiving bank assistance. When Kerry is shot, Kitty opens a letter from Kerry's wife that he had been carrying for five years, and cables her. Kerry's wife arrives and informs him that his last bet in England had turned out to be a $20,000 winner. Kerry is able to use the money just in time to foil Burlingame and secure the property, thus winning prosperity and the affections of his wife.
- While working as a flower girl in Devlin Maddox's nightclub, Nellie Vaughan meets wealthy young Pelton Van Teel and falls in love. Maddox, desirous of using Nellie to blackmail Van Teel, spreads a rumor that she is his mistress. This makes Nellie uncomfortable, and she demands that Van Teel marry her immediately, to which he agrees. Meanwhile, Van Teel has been losing money gambling to Maddox, who threatens to break up the marriage by producing a worthless check that the young husband has written. Venturing to Maddox's apartment for a showdown, Nellie pulls a gun and demands the check, accidentally shooting Maddox when he throws a lamp at her. Maddox plans to charge Nellie with assault, but when the police arrive, his butler, actually a detective employed by the elder Van Teel, exposes Maddox, who is then arrested, clearing the path for the couple's happiness.
- Andrew MacTavish Ferguson and Lucy Baird, reporters for a New York newspaper, trade assignments. Both are fired when Lucy's article, written by Andy, criticizes the political party backing the paper. They go to her home, the Southern town of Bradford, where her father Daniel, about to run for sheriff, hires them to edit his newspaper. When they expose a gang of liquor smugglers, the mysterious Black Riders, already responsible for the deaths of two reformers, send Daniel and Andrew notes with black circles drawn on them, symbolizing death. Although Daniel's home and office are ransacked and his character is attacked, he wins the election, then arrests the gang after they capture Andy. Among the gang is the previous sheriff, Jacob Ackerman, who accuses prosecuting attorney Philip Parker of being the real leader. This is confirmed when Andy's visiting Aunt Janet recognizes Parker as the ex-president of a swindling mining company. Later, she advises Andy to marry Lucy, which he does.
- Peggy Stanton, who lives in a cottage with her invalid father, intrigues her wealthy friend Tom Hamilton with legends about Captain Kidd. With Mammy Lou, an oracle, they hunt for buried treasure on a nearby island, but Mammy, frightened by a supposed ghost, leaves them stranded there for a night. After Peggy's father insists that they marry, Tom's father tries to get the marriage annulled, but he dies. When Tom's uncle claims the estate by insisting that Tom was illegitimate, Tom renounces his name and leaves. Peggy's father dies, and years later, when her foster-father arranges a fashionable marriage for her, she reveals her marriage. He hires a lawyer to find her husband and secures an annulment, not knowing that Tom is the lawyer. After Tom visits Peggy, who falls in love with him again, they return to the island and find the papers stolen by Tom's uncle that prove Tom is the legitimate heir. They then happily resume their marriage.
- Blossom Ruggles, the fiercely independent daughter of Arizona cattleman Hank Ruggles, loves neighboring rancher Asa Harris. To pique Asa, however, she flirts with mining engineer Frank Stimpson, who unknown to her, has deceived pretty half-wit Amelia Young. While riding the range, Blossom is attacked by a Mexican bandit, but manages to overpower him, and deliver him to Asa and the cowboys, who throw him from a cliff. Later, the bandit is found unconscious by the sheriff and taken to jail. Learning of the half-wit's plight, Blossom mounts a posse, apprehends Frank, and forces him at gunpoint to marry Amelia. After the ceremony, Asa and Blossom are also wed.
- Young Austrian girl Marie Helmar, is left penniless by the death of her father and disgraced by Prussian officer Captain Von Pfaffen, she flees to the safety of her French cousins, the De La Mottes. There she falls in love with their eldest son Gerome. On the night before their wedding, Marie sends a letter to Gerome confessing her indiscretion with the Prussian, but the letter is returned unopened. Soon after, she recognizes a new household servant to be Von Pfaffen, who demands that Marie disclose war secrets in return for his silence about her past. Torn, she passes on false information, which disgraces the Prussian. In revenge, he attempts to kill Marie, but she shoots him in self-defense. Shaken by remorse, Marie presents Gerome with her confession, which, he then reveals, he had read the night of their wedding. Their life thus unclouded, Marie announces she is expecting Gerome's child.
- Dan Bowers, embittered and disillusioned by an unhappy marriage, seeks solitude in the Maine woods, with a lame dog as his only companion. One day he meets Violet Manners who, with her invalid mother Marion, is visiting in a nearby village. Marion is haunted by memories of the past, and one day when Violet takes Dan to meet her mother, she discovers that he is the husband who deserted her years ago. The shock causes Marion's death, but before she dies, she justifies her past behavior toward Dan.
- A series of unsigned letters circulates in the village of Queenstead, accusing various upstanding citizens of less than stellar behavior. Two detectives try to discover the identity of the sender, but their task is complicated when the infant child of prominent Morton Wells is kidnapped. The detectives develop information that leads them to a mysterious robed figure, who they follow to the home of the town's religious leader, Bishop Filbert, whose daughter Allayne has received one of the "poison pen" letters.
