She follows Kouki around, asks him to tutor her, and wants to date him. Although Kouki becomes interested in Rio, there is a reason he doesn't pursue the relationship. However, Rio is very insistent and starts changing her whole world for the better in order to be with him. Suddenly Kouki disappears without saying goodbye, and Rio is crushed. Her friends, with the help of Kouki's relative, find him working at another school. Rio then finds out that he is dying of brain cancer, which is why he wanted to keep his distance, in order to avoid breaking her heart. She convinces him to get a risky operation, even if it means he cannot remember her, so that they can have more time together. In the end, he survives the operation, and they get together again, though it isn't clear if he remembers her.

Harumi is also a terminally ill patient suffering from cancer. Later that evening, the two sneak down into the cafeteria area and drink lots of tequila together. While in a drunken haze, Katsuhito decides to take Harumi out of the hospital and to see the ocean for the first time in her life. When the pair walk out of the hospital they spot an expensive import car with its doors unlocked. What Katsuhito and Harumi are unaware of is that the car has millions of dollars in its trunk and its owners will resort to any means to retrieve their money.

Surrounding the Orochi's revival a three-way battle takes place between the brothers, special forces Yamainu and ninja group Anyaku from Fuma clan.

Kawato-Sensei's persistence, bigheartedness, and his belief in the kids allow each member one-by-one to turn their lives around. They realize that they have dreams and that dream is to play at Koshien High School Baseball Tournament. But, they run into loads of drama a long the way, including random thugs who want nothing more than to keep them from playing Baseball, fist fights, and personal drama that almost disallow them to even keep the Baseball Club/Team, let alone compete in the tournament. Eventually the Kids learn that the saying "All For One, and One For All" is the only way they will overcome all obstacles in the way.
